Default Fifth portrait in Pern Series for Pern Museum & Archives

The first portrait of 2008 by Linda Eicher, the artist so expertly attuned to Pern's persons and scenes, is up at the Pern Museum and Archives. While not a major protagonist in the wider scheme of things, the interesting character of

Red Hanrahan

the father and father-in-law of Pern's first Weyrleaders Sorka Hanrahan and Sean Connell, does have his own very special short story: The Ford of Hanrahan. It's a wonderful story telling of a group of colonists traveling from Fort to the new founded Ruatha Hold and the dangerous fording of a river in spate. Needless to say that Linda has chosen this scene to be the background of this sixth portrait in the series for The Pern Museum & Archives. From heavy oxen to the oddly shaped cart made from a sled, carrying the airlock doors that were to be installed as the new Hold's doors to the power torches and horses King and Cloudy; all is there, while the ominous sense of real bad weather hangs over all...

Red looks great, someone I'd want to know and have rooting for me. And I love the depiction of the ford crossing.

Sly Lin, I didn't even know you were working on a new one this time! Fabulous job as usual!

Almost exactly as I'd imagined this one, right down to the clothing. ^^

Awesome job Lady Maelin!

What a great way to start the day! I spent the whole time it took me to eat my breakfast staring at that picture. I don't know how you manage to put so much character in your faces, Master Maelin. In Red I can see the strain of Turns of troubles but also the underlying sense of humor and dedication and even a touch of satisfaction. Red is a character I always found interesting and you have certainly done a wonderful job of presenting him to us at one of the most significant moments of his life. And as for the crossing itself, it's awesome!!!

P.S. I had to leave before I had a chance to say that the bolt of lightening and the way it lit up the rocks was a really great touch! It gives the whole thing a sense of immediacy and makes me want to wade out and help get those critters across the ford!

Oh, that is just right. Master Maelin, you have such a good mind's eye. You have done another superb job at depicting the people and places of Anne's books.

I do love each and every one of these portraits! I think that the lighting was a fabulous touch! I actually went to Hans' site before this was posted and saw it 'early'!!
I'm still trying to figure out who Red was modeled after.

@Cheryl...Thank you, I am so glad that you are enjoying this one so much. I found when drawing this one...I wouldn't have minded a bit following Red across Pern.

@Sara, glad your vision is like own on this one...thank you for your compliments.

@Thea, Glad your enjoying it...thank you so much for the compliments.

@Sandi, I am so happy that it started your day of right for you. Gee if you spent all your breakfast looking at it...then you have seen all it's flaws by now..but I won't tell if you don't!!!Thank you dear friend...glad you enjoyed it so much. Thank you so much for your lovely comments and compliments.

@L'isa...Since I have always enjoyed all the people and many places of Anne stories...it is a true pleasure to draw them for everyone else to hopefully enjoy too. Seems we all have similar visions of Pern...but I suppose that is due to Anne most excellent writing, and all the details she gifted to her worlds. Thank you so much for the compliment.

@Peter...thank you kind sir!!!

@Maw, thank you kindly for your compliment.

@Becky, Thank you so much for the lovely compliments...the lighting just seemed to make sence...and a great way to say *Night* without making the whole painting to dark to see anything. With the lighting in the background, it allows the brain to thinking that more light is corect. I use models for the pose and some of the features...but mostly after that I just try my best to adapt it to what Anne has discribed in the books. Liam Nesson was the base for this one...but I had to make him look older , more tired and greylooking.

@Hans...thanks so much again for all your interesting and helpful ideas and for such a lovely home for it to be seen in.

Ah, Master Maelin! Thanks for letting me know who you used as a base. I can certainly see Liam in that portrait and you did a fabulous job of ageing him.
****waits in anticipation for the next portrait!!****

Becky...your more than welcome..glad you enjoyed it. I do use some celebrities for the base and a good pose for my portriats...but my aim is not to make it look like them...but like the character that is called for in the books. I not only aged him but changed a few of the features to make it look more *Red* and not Liam in this portriat.
