Zelandeth, I'm glad no one was hurt and the damage was minimal. I would stay away from tempered glass too after that.

Dena: are you going to give up driving then? Most of the windows in your car are tempered glass.

That's one of the main differences between cars sold in the US and a majority of other countries; windshields here have to be laminated safety glass. A lot of other countries even use tempered windshields. But side and rear windows are almost exclusively tempered glass. have been since the times when side windows started bein curved instead of flat.

Our windscreens have to be laminated too, but the rest are just tempered and explode into small cubes.

Japan uses tempered windshields in models that are Japan-only. I think Australia uses tempered also.

I had a wonderful time. The orchestra was excellent, the fim clips on the big screen behind them sometimes made me laugh and sometimes brought tears to my eyes. Star Trek may be 50 years old but it's message of peace and learning to get along with each other (among other things) is even more important today - in a time when we are so terribly divided!

Okay, just made a discovery which has made me grin like an idiot and go bouncing around the dining table about as exuberantly as our dog does when excited.
Scotiacon 2016 has just been officially announced. Same location, 6th through 9th November. Registration won't be open for a long while yet I imagine, but it's nice to know that it is actually coming up and to have a set date in the diary. Also gives me a firm deadline for my project. In the real world 9 months sounds like a reasonably long time...when trying to design and make something from scratch, without *really* having the slightest idea what I'm doing though, it doesn't sound very long at all! Especially with prior knowledge of how slowly my projects tend to progress, especially when real life keeps insisting on getting in the way. In other news, I have finally managed to convince my father to let me order his groceries and such for him to be delivered to his door. Firstly this means I know he's got the essentials covered, and it's saving him a GBP80 round trip taxi journey. |

I know a lot of people here who would have loved the Trek concert, glad you had fun.
Internet gremlin has struck my house again. We're without it and will be for awhile. A tornado hit not far from us, in Appomattox Va. We drove down a couple of days later, the amount of damage done in just a few min. really makes you think how life can change in an instant. It hit just as kids were getting out of school. The school made the parents picking kids up to into the school and kept the kids at school until the storm passed. It was very late before all the kids could make it home, because of all the trees down blocking roads. Some how only one person was killed, and only a few were injured. I think that was because most people were not home.

Today I mostly ascertained that I have *not* fixed the water ingress issue in the Citroen.
Grrr...Seriously getting fed up with this now. Left with only one possible ingress point that I can think of - the actual seam between the pillar and the roof skin. There's a tiny crack in the paint visible there, and I can only assume that the same is true of the seam sealer under it. Will seal that up tomorrow and fingers crossed that will sort it. After that about the only other option left is that the water is actually phasing through the roof itself to get into the car... |

Do miss having a convertible I admit...
Sadly the Xantia was never offered as one. Hence why mine is pretending to be I guess... ...or I'm just dealing with the joys of running an 18 year old car with 203K miles on the clock and counting. The odd gremlin is bound to show up. |

Perhaps your car was owned by a Catholic priest and it's trying to asperge you with holy water?

Dang fingers are making harder to type, this all day stiffness, and trembling is getting hard to move around. I'm end up going to a walking stick/cane that has four feet on the bottom, + my long white seeing cane.
Say safe we got Storms I'm heading offline.

Ginny, wishing you health.
I will be a Baby Cabbage Monger at the So Cal Renaissance Faire this year. I am having a great time at the workshops and working with my guild. I'd forgotten how much fun it was to "work" the faire.

Yes, it is more fun to work a party than to just attend isn't it? Hope you have a marvellous time.

A monger is a mobile merchant like a fish monger. Baby cabbages aka Brussels sprouts. I am part of the Mongers guild and we will be performing as mongers in the streets of the Renn Faire for the entertainment of out patrons.

Brussels sprouts, food of Kings, my personal fav. veggie. Haven't found anything they don't go well with, as of yet.

Why is it that when it decides to rain when you're out walking the dog, it always arrives right as you get to the furthest possible point from home? Happened to me this evening, was just about to start back when I looked over my shoulder. Cue that moment of "Ooooh...this is gonna be bad..." as I realise that the horizon has vanished, and that wall of water is rapidly heading in my direction.
Proper not being able to see more than five feet in front of your face rain that was. I can however now vouch for the waterproofing properties of the new jacket I got at Christmas though! Was bone dry from the knees up. Dog, not so much...which now means the whole house smells of wet dog. Lovely. Then spent a considerable portion of the evening beating Windows 7 into actually installing and doing something useful. Only to have the only program I'd installed it for (Sculptris) to proceed to crash as soon as I started it. I rapidly lost interest in that and have vowed to do battle with it again tomorrow with a less tired brain. Did have an interesting time while it was installing though, rummaging around through my PC from the 1998-2003ish era. Discovered two things. 1. It makes a really interesting time capsule digging around on the hard drive(s) of a machine that has been redundant for so long. 2. I really miss Windows 2000...Even on that creaky old 300MHz AMD K6-2 with 128 meg of RAM is flies along. That's not a fresh install either, it has a good couple of years on it! Still sounds like the starship Enterprise powering up too, and the one hard drive (a 1.2Gb full height 5.25" beast from 1991 - yes, 1.2Gb and 1991) still makes the floor shake when the heads move. I periodically look at that machine and think "I should really tidy it up a bit in recognition of how much use I got out of it for all it was a Spare Parts Special." Then I open the cover and see the sea of spaghetti and abruptly cram it all back in the case and change that to "Maybe another day..." The problem with things that have evolved over a number of years in a highly organic manner is that they don't do it tidily! ...and I'm not entirely certain that if I took it apart to re-wire in a more sensible way that it would ever work again...as I'm pretty certain it *shouldn't* work now. |

There were a few posts earlier vin the month about extreme weather.
Strikes me is that nature is not a gentle nurturing mother figure after all: it's a ranting uncontrollable teenager!

Yesterday evening I demonstrated why you shouldn't mess around with bits of software that can break things at 1 in the morning.
Was re-formatting a USB stick so that the various Windows machines around the house can use it (been a Linux user here since 2007), and through a combination of being tired, not really paying attention to what I was doing and simply because I'm stupid, managed to delete the boot partition of my laptop's hard drive rather than the partition on the USB stick. Idiot. This was actually caused by the fact that all the devices are shown on a list to the left of the screen, and you pick which one you're working with - but every time you apply an operation it jumps back to the top when done, and I didn't spot that - because of the reasons mentioned above! So just spent the last couple of hours sorting that out. No lasting harm done or any data lost, just annoying and made me feel like a right idiot. |
