Default Fore Edge Paintings

If anyone is interested in Rare books decorated with a fore-edge painting try the following website:

A fore-edge painting is where the page block of a book is fanned and an image is applied to the stepped surface of the page edges. The art of fore-edge painting came into existance in the mid 17th century, although the actual originator of fore-edge painting is unknown. Today fore-edge painting is practiced by a few select artists.

Re: Fore Edge Paintings

Wow, I did not know it existed.

However, I think I might have come across some of the books without fanning them to see the picture, because I did not know, but wondered about the coloured foreedge.

This is definitely new to me - how clever humans are

The Rowan is my favourite!

"The name rowan is believed to derive from the Norse runa - "a charm". It was often planted outside houses to ward off witches. On May Day a spray of rowan leaves was hung over doors to repel evil, and wells dressed with rowan to keep witches away. The rowan, or mountain ash, is found commonly in Scotland, sometimes clinging to a rock face."
