Default Newly bought Pern items

I recently managed to buy a First Edition, First Printing UK White Dragon on eBay for what I condiser a steal... (under 10 pounds / 18 US dollars).

problem is, the dustjacket (spine) is a little dirty. It looks like a little like an oil painting that has some old varnish layer on it.
Maybe I can clean it, but the question is: what with. I do not want to damage the dustjacket of course!
Anybody has advise. The dirt doesn't seem to be anything special, just clinging dirt like the cover has become a little sticky (e.g. from hands a littel sticky from candy/sugar) and dust has been attached to the paper that way.

I need to get this book signed, which will multiply the value many times

Another lot I bought on (UK) ebay arrived today: 11 paperbacks in very good tot fine condition. I bought the lot for the covers with Steve Weston art and the coloured bands, of which I was missing a few... I'm only missing a few of the engish paperback editions now and almost have all UK and US editions (read: different covers) in my collection.

Here's the ones I could add to the collection:

Actually, the white spine Corgi didn't come with the batch and was a seperate buy. It's Dragonquest with the old Steve Weston art but with the new lettering (Morpheus font) in which series a few titles (among them Dragonsong and The White Dragon) also got new cover art by Les Edwards.

Of the stuff left from the lot three (Dragonflight, Dragonquest and Dragonsdawn) will probably go to Cheryl. The Dolphins (without the bands) and the Red Star Rising we already both own.

lo Hans, just use a damp cloth to wipe it over. Some soap if you like. The keyword is damp.

Can I pass you a book to get signed too?

LOL Bert, if I did that I could start a business I think but sorry to say I won't. I actually detest people who get their books signed by Anne and then just sell them for profit (even if it is to finance buying more of her books).

Are you 100% sure about the damp cloth? Soap, doesn't that have anyhting nasty in it?

Aren't the Les Edwards ones on books that had covers with the really spiny dragons- I can't remember who drew them and most of my Pern books went home with Mum yesterday, but I remember they were really spiny and had prominant "beaks" Jaxom had a bright red cloak on the white dragon cover. I know that Dsong, Dsinger and TWD had new covers (cos I quite liked the nes DSong one but I couldn't justify buying a new book for the cover) the copy of dsinger in the 1st photo's an example.

The dragons you mean are by David Fairbrother Roe, Edi.
He did covers for White Dragon, Dragonsong and Dragonsinger, and yes, those are also among the lot I bought.

The dragons with the holes in their wings are Steve Weston's dragons.

You might be right about Edwards replacing Roe and not Weston as Les didn;t do Dragondrums... hadn't thought about it that way Thanks!

no worries.
I can't get anything at the moment
I browsed ebay the other night just to see, but there wasn't much in my price range, and nothing that really grabbed me
well there was that edition of restoree *sigh* Buy it Now for £255 pounds- or something like that, and a 1st ed of Dsong-it had days to go and will go through the roof...
I'm drifting!
well it's nice reading about what you've got! Almost makes up for not being able to get it myself!

The reason for me asking is because all the Anne book signing sessions will be in the US and theres only 1 book I want signed, its my favourite book, and I consider myself very lucky to get hold of a hardcover copy of that book. So selling it is way out of the question. Also, after seeing all the stuffs you have.... lets just say I'm jealous.

Pic of the book.

As for the damp cloth, yes 100% sure. I wipe my books now and then, to get the dust off them. The dust jackets are glossy anyway. Should be no problem.

lovely book!
if you're worried about soapy stuff
why don't you try something ecological
they don't have nasties in and if they don't dry my skin up they should be ok for a book!

Hans, try "BABY WIPES", they are very mild and no soap is in them(make sure it doesn't have any cream or oil, some brands do), just the cheap ones are best. They clean all manner of things with out any damage. try it on a book that doesn't mean that much to you(if you have one) and try it on a tiny spot. I have used them before and they clean great, and gently.

Hans, a slightly damp cloth will work fine on your book covers. You can also wipe it with a clean dry cloth after you use the damp, just to be sure it's good and dry. As Maelin said, test a small area first.

That was the book that I lacked in my collection, that I bought this last week end, Dolphins of Pern(not riders as I mistaken said before) I couldn't believe I didn't have it already. Mine if the US version, not the Corgi version though.

I don't know what I would have done without taking Cheryl's advice in getting my copy of Hargreaves... ...that book is invaluable to anyone who is serious about collecting Anne's books. Thank you so much Cheryl.

Hargreaves is very valuable for collectors. I first used one to help find out what to collect. But since it is so valuable in itself it's not handy to tote around when you're book hunting, as I was, in different book stores. Hence, creating my own which is made to be USED.

I made the same choice, in chosing my Easton Press as my first signed book of Anne's. I have since had the great advice to go and buy myself a Hargreaves, before going and buying anything else. I now know what kind of collection that I am really after. It will take me the rest of my life time, but what a fun hunt it will be.

Hmm. I'm a small time Pern collector, so at this point I'm not sure I need a Hargreaves (although I would LOVE to have one). I'd rather have the Easton Dragonflight (unsigned version with no dragon on cover) simply because I love that book and I want it in HB (dragonriders omni does not count). Now I need to find an easton dragonquest...

Is there proof that this book even exists? All I've ever come across are a few comments on the internet about it. I've never seen a picture of it.

I would expect it to go for a lot. Signed SOP, chronicles and others are listed for like 150-200$ on ebay... so ... I may have to wait a few years until I'm in the financial position to be able to afford this book (assuming I can even find it).
