Default Living in Leiden

We arrived in Leiden late Thursday evening. Our furniture and stuff arrived Friday and we spent the weekend unpacking. Sadly we still haven't found the remote for the dvd player.
It was my first day at the dutch course yesterday and today my husband lets me use his computer at work for a little while, so I don't feel too deprived from internet.

We found rye bread, skimmed milk and salted butter in the supermarket, so we are quite contend with the living standard that we can have here in Leiden. We are also looking forward to being able to go see a movie that isn't dubbed.

Apparently it's very bureaucratic here, so it's necessary to have an appointment to register at the town hall - the first available date was January 24th. We actually need to be registered to get a bank account, but I think the university where Anders works have an agreement with one of the banks, so we might be able to get an account early. And we need a a bank account to sign up with phone/internet.

Glad you made it. Appointments at the town hall? Hmm, ah well, each municipality makes their own rules I suppose. Look at the bright side: they then have reserved time for you.

Isn't there a liaison at Anders' work that did thr preliminary work/stuff?

So glad you have arrived at your new home in Lieden .

How is your bird doing okay I hope?I have been worring whether he got to cold or not on the journey?

Well once you get all the paperwork finished I would expect you will love living in Lieden...all the photos yours and the one from the internet show it to be a very beautiful place.

I'm sending you and your hubby a *Happy House Warming Toast* or beer (take your pick) . Enjoy those windows...and being able to watch the seasons change through them.
P.S. which Dutch course did you pick?

If you don't find the remot, there's usually generic ones for sale for between 5 and 10 euro's (various shops, like Blokker).

Just popping in to say a short HELLO.

We still haven't got internet, but we finally got a bank account and have now signed up with internet (Alice - thanks for the advice Hans!). It will take 2-4 weeks before it is set up and working, but it's a calming thought that it's on its way.

Anders and I have been sick with the flu this week, and are now better except for a cold that won't leave my nose.

As to the dvd remote - we never did find it, but ended up buying a new original remote. I was looking at universal remotes, when this guy at the store said he could order the original for me, so we opted for that, and actually had the new remote already the next day!

I haven't time to lurk the site right now, and will probably have to wait until I get internet at home, to catch up on what is going on here, but I hope that you are all well and happy.

Best wishes to you all from a windy Leiden!

Hope the internet will be working soon, 4 weeks sounds rather long, but ike you said, it's in the pipeline.

I'm so happy to hear that you both are getting your lives settled finally in Leiden. You will definitely feel more at home when you finally get your internet back.
Sorry to hear that you both are down with the flu right now...but with good rest you both will be well very soon. It will indeed be very lovely to see you back posting on MoM.
Soooooooooo...Have you been getting a lot of your knitting projects finished, while you have been waiting for your internet service to get hooked up???
Hope to see you posting again soon!!!

Just popping by to see what you all are up to.

I still haven't got internet, but a guy from KPN is coming to arrange for the phone line tomorrow, but unfortunately we won't have actual phone and internet connection until the 20th according to a letter from Alice (the provider).

The weather is absolutely fantastic this weekend, and yesterday we went to the zoo in Rotterdam. I wanted to call Hans to let him know that we were in the neighbourhood, but for some reason his phone number wasn't in my cell phone. I was so sure that I had put it in my Danish cell phone, since I had used that one to call him in Denmark, but it seems I didn't.

Well, I'll definitely make sure to write the number in my Dutch cell phone right now, so it won't happen again. And i hope that Hans might have time to show us some of the sights in Rotterdam some day soon. I know that Anders would like to see the harbour, and I for one would like to see Hans' book case.

We spend 4 hours walking around the zoo, and I did take a couple of pics, but you guys have to wait until I get internet at home to see the pics.

You would be more than welcome at my house to see my bookcase and eat! (food, not books).
Did you take the Spido Harbour trip by boat? If not, that's what we'll want to do next time if Anders wants to see the harbours

what a pity you couldn't cal me when you were in Rotterdam. Darn!
Hope we can arrange something soon.

Blijdorp Zoo is wonderful but if you're a zoo lover (and I think you are) we need to go to Burgers in Arnhem!

Hope to be in touch soon!

Thanks Maelin, you're not bad at writing Dutch either - except maybe that you really ought to call me by the informal jij/je and not the formal u. Unless of course you consider me a stranger?

I wrote a job application today - in Dutch!
I hope there wasn't too many mistakes in it, but I thought I might as well send it off without running it by a native Dutch person, since it was a relatively short text and in the end it is me and my not completely perfect Dutch that they are considering to hire. The job is CAD-tekenaar (technical draughter) here in Leiden.

I have a Dutch level 2 exam on 24 March, and I'm thinking I should pay the 990 euros for the level 3+4 course afterwards. It's a lot of money, but I see it as an investment in my future here in Holland.

I'm staying in the Max-Planck Haus at present, and apartment-hunting right now. I'm going to go for a cheaper, larger place further away, I think - possibly Kirchheim or Ziegelhausen, but we'll see.

I lived in Kirchheim for 2 years until we moved to Südstadt for the last year. We lived in some of the newer buildings and was quite happy there, but in the end we moved to something bigger. If you don't mind living further off then you could also consider Leimen - that might be even cheaper than Kirchheim. But you should easily find something if you look on www.immobilienscout24.de .

Happy house hunting!

Hi Bert!
I used AutoCAD 2006 at my last job. And the job add said they used Microstation, but if you new AutoCAD it would be fine, so I should have a chance if they don't mind me speaking not-quite-perfect Dutch.
Hope you are having fun in Germany.

We visited a museum here in Leiden last weekend, called Naturalis. It's a small natural history museum - stuffed animals, dried plants and rocks and so on. It isn't a spectacular museum, but nice enough for a short visit. There's also some other rather nice museums here in Leiden that we visited last year in May when we came to scout out the city. And I'm of course looking forward to meet Hans again.

My favourite museum In Leiden is the National Museum of Antiquities. It has a wonderful collection of especially Egyptian artifacts and mummies (like the other European countries we stole indiscrimiately during the colonial times...)

Current special exhibitions there are:

Beneath the Sands of Time - Dutch excavations in Egypt
29 November 2007 - 11 May 2008
A unique exhibition on the history of the excavations in Saqqara by the National Museum of Antiquities, set against the background of four centuries of Dutch archaeological research in Egypt. Personal notes, diary entries, photos and of course objects give a fascinating impression of the work of the curators who ventured into the Egyptian desert on behalf of the museum.

Brilliant Bijoux
14 September 2007 - 24 March 2008
An overview exhibition of the most beautiful jewels from the museum’s collection, with items from the ancient Near East, Egypt, the Roman Empire and the ancient Netherlands.
The magnificent necklace of a prehistoric warrior, a pharaoh’s silver diadem, the fine seal ring of a well-to-do Roman, the beaded necklace of a medieval damsel. More than 7,500 years of brilliant decoration in an overview exhibition of items from the museum’s own collection.

Any special fields you're intereted in, Nef? Or Anders?

Did anybody sayto your husband yet: "So..., you are Different?"
And did you already encountered the chain of optometrists/spectacle shops called Hans Anders? To others: no, we didn't went into business together

I might squeeese in a visit next year. This year all our extra money are going towards the trip to India (hopefully in December).

Hans, don't worry - if you find a date that suits you, we'll jump on the first train to Rotterdam. You know, it's only 25 minutes away by train.

OH MY LORD....India, that sounds wonderful. I certainly hope you share some of those photos with us. Where in India are you planning to visit? You and your husband certainly have itchy feet...or a lot of pioneers in your blood in your family tree.

The job interview went very well. It's a recruiting bureau, and he said I have very good chances. He's setting up 3-5 interviews with different companies.

Maelin, we are planning on flying to Delhi and then take the train to Guwahati with a 2 day stop in Varanasi. We haven't planned anything yet, but the main part of the trip will be in Assam where there is a wild life reserve called Kaziranga. (link to Kaziranga)
There is also a gibbon sanctuary in the area and tea plantations.

I promise to share any good pictures, that I may happen to take while there, with you and anybody else interested. Most of them will probably be of animals.

Thats sounds so wonderful.... What a fantastic trip you have planned. Are you and Anders going to be taking a Safari to see the horned Rhino's or the bird sanctury....or both???
