That is a huge number of people without power for a significant amount of time, Zelandeth. I wonder how this affected nursing homes and hospitals. Do they have generators or were they also without power? Do you know if there is any plan to improve this situation?

Oops. Confused myself talking about how our well is run by electricity. Obviously, it was water you were without. Still not pleasant for anyone, including the facilities I mentioned.

Friends of mine from the UK were just here for about a week and a half; seeing New York City and Washington, D.C. They sent us a post card of The Statue of Liberty. Had a wonderful time but got blisters on their feet from so much walking in Washington! Anyway, I wanted to share his last couple lines from the email he just sent because it warmed my heart!

"We had a great holiday, made especially nice by the civility, politeness and 'wanting us to enjoy ourselves' attitude of your fellow citizens! Great!"

Fort Wayne Indiana where I live has about the same population plus or minus about 10 000. I cannot picture a single pump going out taking out the water supply for the city and Allen County. A small area maybe but not the entire city and county. Of course we have 4 to 6 major industrial pumps at just the water treatment plant and three to five more in each quadrant of the city to distribute the water to the city and areas of the county that are connected to the city. Something more had to have happened.

We could use some rain. The ground is very dry. Every county in the state is under a water restriction/don't water your lawns, etc. I take a watering can out to my pumpkin plants every morning but it may not be enough. Last year they rotted from too much rain, this year it is too dry. Sigh.

Here in southern Illinois we're just having the heat and humidity again. The heat index today reached 107 degrees. I feel sorry for Zelandeth and any of our other members in the UK. I saw an article today that this week will probably bring them temps in the 100 to 105 range and apparently less than 10% of people have AC.

R'zil, is heat index like "wind chill factor?" Not an actual temperature but how we are "supposed" to feel given a number of factors. I think I felt warmer before they started blathering on about "wind chill factor!"

Yes. local weathermen refer to it as the "feels like" temp. It's a combination of the temp and the humidity.

I have a good friend who is a high school teacher in the UK. She is very concerned as to what to expect the next couple days. Apparently they have been told schools WILL be open and to "make adjustments." I'm not sure how you do that in buildings with poor air circulation and no air conditioning.

Good to hear! Both the fun part and not drowning! I like going to the beach, more for walking along and sticking my feet in the water. I burn easily so lying out for hours is not for me. Did you get any burn or was lots of sunscreen used? Did you stay over or was it a day trip?

Every time a housemate asks me something, my roommate asks me what the housemate asked me! Getting tired of the questions! Why doesn't he ask her instead of me? And the housemate's instant coffee is half gone, bossy girl says he's been drinking it. He would have put it in the cabinet if he had! It's sitting on the dining room table where bossy girl put it awhile back. The other evening, I cleaned up the dining room table, 2 empty cans of soda. Tell me he drank them down there while he was in the house on the hill! She's the liar!

The flowering crops we have are canola and mustard which are a bright yellow and flax that is a lovely soft blue. If you get up in the hills and look across the prairie you see an awesome mosaic of colours. Yellow canola, blue flax the bright greens of wheat, oats, barley, corn, peas and legumes, the dark brown of fresh worked fallow fields. If you get really lucky and a storm and sun cooperate you get an unbelievable picture, the dark blues and towering whites of the storm clouds with the sun reflecting you get a sort of golden overlay, makes everything right in the world for a few minutes.

I hope whatever you ordered arrives, Ginny and the wild goose chase turns out to be successful!

It is indeed hot here but we at least have air conditioning. I have friends in South Africa where it gets much hotter than here and for longer periods of time. They seem to have almost no A/C! The answer I get is they are "used" to the heat! I'm not sure it is something I ever want to get used to, especially the humidity!

Thunder and lightning here! Took a quick bath right before the storm hit! Had needed to change my system. I have no idea why bossy girl tells her boyfriend EVERYTHING!! The goings on here does NOT concern him! She runs her mouth WAY too much! If mom knew what the girl does, she'd probably take the phone from her! He might as well be living here!! He knows everything that goes on here!

Just finished a small needlepoint coin purse. I purchase these with a zipper that goes all the way around so they open to lie flat for sewing. The "back" is a light blue velour. The front is plain needlepoint fabric (tiny squares) that I transfer a pattern onto, sometimes using my light table. The purses are about 4 inches wide by 3 inches high. The picture I just did was very simple. A Mickey Mouse head done in rainbow colors - red, orange, yellow, green, dark blue, light blue and purple. I used ecru (off white) as the background color. Because that is so close to the color yellow, tomorrow I will outline Mickey with black thread to make it stand out. It only took about a day and a half to do all this. Needlepoint goes much faster than cross stitch!

I'm sure my wife would love it, because she's the original Mickey fanatic. Are you making them to sell?

I tried selling things once and found that most people have no idea how much work goes into a craft project so even my small prices were "too much." So, I make to give away and as your wife is a Mickey fan I'll be happy to give her one. This first one is going with me to Florida when we go in the Fall. I have a second Mickey ready to be made on another coin purse but that probably won't happen for a month or so - after I finish the large cross stitch project I'm doing. I had your address at one point and then got a new address book and "lost" you, so if you PM it to me I'll write it in the new book and send Mickey when he gets done.

If you are willing to include an email address I can send you a picture so your wife can decide if it is anything she would want. I won't be offended if it's not anything she is interested in.

In southern Illinois we're currently at 93 degrees with 71 percent humidity. That puts our heat index, or "real feel" temp at 116. I went into town this morning for a few things but now I'm hunkering down in the AC.

Priscilla, I don't "do" the heat index either but the National Weather Service website 7 day forecast for my zip code also lists the current info, including the heat index.

Finally got back home an hour ago. I called the transportation company several times today after my appointment. I was waiting in the area I told the company I'd be. Finally I got a ride home! Ate dinner and drank water (was thirsty as heck)!

Grocery store this morning. Might go to the pet/garden supply store on my way home. What an exciting life!

Meanwhile it was getting rather wild here. 113kph is over 70 miles an hour - too fast for the baggage handlers to go out to the plane to unload it. I wouldn't have liked to be on that plane when it landed, they buck all over the sky and the pilot will say something like: "anywhere else in the world you'd be paying for a rollercoaster ride like this." And the Brooklyn fire engine in the video is likely to go screaming down the landward side of the hill past my bedroom at 2am with all sirens blaring. I stayed inside except for about half an hour picking up broken branches out of our carpark and stacking them ready for the gardeners to take them away when they come. There's been so much wind lately that the pile is almost as tall as me - five feet. And I'm on the sheltered side of the hill.
