Question 2 Quick questions

My first question is would a person wear thier rank knot to a formal gathering, & dressed in BEST!!! gather dress? Do you think as a jourman dolphineer I would be able to get by without the sholedr knotts at acontume contes? I will be wearing a rather large dolphin necklace.

My sencond question do the woman wear make-up? I have enver heard it mentioned but wated to get a sencond oppion. ]

As always all infor is APPERCATED (in if I can't spell the word right LOL)

With formal and working clothes you should wear your cords I think. But if you are wearing a gather dress, maybe not as I think a combo of fancy dress and cord would look rather silly.

And a dolphineer wearing make up? I don't think so
But when going to the gather? Sure, why not but keep in mind that early Ninth Pass Pernese don't know synthetics (but only if you wanted to be ultra authentic, so don't worry about it but keep it subdued).

I wouldn't be to surprised if they had stuff similar to the Ancient Japanese makeup...kohl like stuff for the eyes, something for the lips etc.

Actually its something I've been debating putting into a Thread...makeup and jewellery on Pern. I just haven't got around to it yet.

(And think, my curiousity actually started when I wondered where Lessa got that thing around her neck from PoP).

The main fabric is sude & the other is a brocade which was mantioned.
I got the idea for the dress design from a picture in A Gift of Dragons. The runner (I forget her name) was all dressed for a gather in a barrowed dress & the dress was 17th or 18th centery. I will be getting it tomarrow. I tried it on last night & it looked good.

As far as jewlery I would think that they would have alot of hand crafted stuff. From what ever was local or could be gotten at a gather. They had metal & gems. I'm wearing a neclace of a dolphing, it is out lined in a gold colored metal. The dolphins are stained glass. I think it is something that could be easily gotten at a gather or put together by any crafty person.

I agree on the jewelry, I would think there would be lots of hand-crafted necklaces, bracelets, etc. Every Gather ought to have at least one jeweler's booth and expect a fairly brisk trade.

As for rank cords... I would think that for men at least their formal Gather clothes are designed to be worn with them always. When you're in the crowd of a Gather you want to proudly display your rank and craft, for the instant respect it garners for you--if you're a journeyman or Master. If just an apprentice you might not want to bother, but would likely be required to wear them and be expected to be good representatives of your Hall.

With women, it gets trickier because they will look odd with formal Gather wear, but dresses still could be designed to look good with cords. Apprentices still would be required to wear them, I would think. Journeywomen and Masters might sometimes just wear a badge/pin or other sign of their rank and Hall at times, perhaps.

This would be a good question to put to Anne, actually...

I'd think that dolphineers would have a necklace strand made out of coral and shells (the small olive shells).

They might also have plain everyday cords and fancy gather cords.

I could see owning a second set of cords (identical to the first) to be worn just on dress occasions -- so that they'd be in good condition. But on the other hand, if your cords are looking so worn that you wouldn't want to wear them with your finest clothes, it's perhaps time to replace them anyways.

Unless I can find some at Dragoncon I'm not going to have the rank cords. I will have a dolphin necklace or pin. Not the one I was going to use at first because it is too big. I have anther that is gold I could use. If I can find it. LOL. I do have some seashells that would be good as well.
I did FINLY get my dress today. The woman did a GREAT job on it. It was well worth the wait.

If you can find them, Maw, there's mention of black diamonds in the canon.
