Well, I have just finished the first draft of the ode. It's here for comments.

My mother, also an Anne fan, paints. Perhaps we could commission a painting from her, in addition to sending the giant card, and maybe a bouquet of flowers, as Hans suggested.

If we go for the painting, I'd need to know asap, so that I can get mum started first thing. Also, what would be, if such is the case, an ideal subject for such a painting?

As for the poem, we should have this written up using calligraphy, on a scoll (or equivalent) since it shall be from us all, collectively, and not just from me. I shall add a small poemlet from myself to any card(s) we send.

*****

Though dragons rule our fannish hearts, and Heth
and Ramoth fly the skies of Pern, let ring
joyously songs to today celebrate, breath
uttering well wishes, or else to sing
a one refrain--Happy Birthday, O Anne--
this first of April! Marvel we as well:
eighty years you've dwelt amongst us and singing
an aria sweet sung (by kind of plan?),
that least of us through hearing know and tell
the joys you give our hearts is bell-like ringing!

We, gathered here today, proffer you wishes
garnered from round the world. At least you know,
as know you well the hearts of all shipfishes
of Pern, some gathered here--why name them now?
For many more you know not yet we seek
audience enough to wish well today,
and hope we our tokens please, bring you pleasure
as we our birthday wishes henceforth speak.
May you, O Lady Holder, come what may,
know love, respect, regard from us past measure.

Let crystal sing to crystal, may all know
we hold you dear within our hearts since you
have given joy beyond our dreams, and so
before we in this ode bid you adieu,
we wish you peace and rest from labours long,
the chance to be with family and friends
upon this very festive April day,
and so as closes this, our birthday song,
in hopes you'll love the wishes all us send,
we wish, simply, a very happy birthday.

I split this post off so discussion of it specifically doesn't get lost in (or take over) the rest of the discussion of what MoM does for Anne's birthday.

Ghyle dearie, forgive me for not having the time to read this tonight before I go to bed. But tomorrow is another day!

That's ok, Cheryl. Feel free to come back with a fresh mind. I hope that you have a lovely sleep, with plenitudes of sweaty dreams (need I ask of whom you dream?).

Jube, that is truly lovely, did you write it, if so I can see that Ghyle is not the only one here with the poets touch.

Wonderful. I love it. I've never read a poem that drew me in so well. Mayhap it's because I love Anne so much, or mayhap it's simply because of the obvious talent you have, but..

This is AWESOME!

Thank you, everybody, for your kind words and sentiments. However, how may I improve it, so that it more truly represents us all, and not just myself?

Thank you for your suggestion, Myt. That is a great idea, although I would have to generalise--countless, rather than more specific numbers, no?

I don't think it's possible to count all the people anymore then it is possible to count all the people on Earth.

Default Second draft

Though dragons rule our fannish hearts, and Heth
and Ramoth fly the skies of Pern, let ring
joyously songs to today celebrate, breath
uttering well wishes, or else to sing
a one refrain--Happy Birthday, O Anne--
this first of April! Marvel we as well:
eighty years you've dwelt amongst us and singing
an aria sweet sung (by kind of plan?),
that least of us through hearing know and tell
the joys you give our hearts is bell-like ringing!

We countless your work's touched proffer you wishes
from around the wide world.

Let crystal sing to crystal, may all know
we hold you dear within our hearts since you
have given joy beyond our dreams, and so
before we in this ode bid you adieu,
we wish you peace and rest from labours long,
the chance to be with family and friends
upon this very festive April day,
and so as closes this, our birthday song,
in hopes you'll love the wishes we all send,
we wish, simply, a very happy birthday.
