Default Skies of Pern (again)

I know. Another new thread. I promise I'm not spamming. What I was wondering is, how exactly does Golanth use timing in Skies of Pern to save F'lessan and Binness? It looked to me like a normal teleport.

Thanks in advance.

I'll quote out of the book if that helps:
"He saw the cliff looming up: if the tsunami didn't drown them, they'd smash against the cliff. Having slowed to catch Binness, Golanth did not have enough air speed to gain altitude!
Between had never been so cold or so comforting. Eight seconds, four deep gasping breaths and then a watery deluge all but drowning them.
The wave is nearly as high as this cliff, Golanth said, sounding amused. He had changed position to bring them out of between nor far from the point where they had first entered over Sunrise Cliff Seahold.
The bronze had timed that rescue! On his own initiative!"

I understand the eight seconds spent in between tells you that they timed it, but I'm at a loss as to what actually went on. I had a theory, which got smashed at the end of the book. I'm just wondering if I missed something, as this event is referred to again and again throughout the course of Skies of Pern.

So I've read on a bit further now, and found out that when Ramoth saved Golanth, the stunt was similar to his own at Cliffside (the timing one that has me confused). Ramoth jumped back in time a minuscule amount to deflect the feline that could have killed Golanth.

Is that what Golanth did? Jumped back in time a tiny amount to flee the wave, as well as teleport? It seems so, but why? Surely he could have just teleported normally.
