Default Carol Berg

I'm not sure how to go about describing this author. Considering the audience it is perhaps best to start by saying she is nothing like Anne McCaffrey. Anne tends to keep her characters in real situations and doesn't torture them. She also has a good deal of humor in her writing that makes it real. Carol Berg's stories tend to start with the main character in the worst situation of their life and then things somehow get worse. But she transports you. You feel in the world. Her stories are immersive. Her descriptions are vivid and her stories are filled with genuine magic (both in terms of story telling and the fantasy setting she favors).

On a personal level, Carol never though she could write. She and her husband worked at HP. She and a co-worked started a silly writing challenge and Carol found her writer's voice. She write's in first person for the most part. She penned her first novel and ended up selling at a writer's conference. They delated that first novel and ended up publishing a trilogy first. So if you want to see the genius that got her published, read Song of the Beast before you turn to her first published novel, Transformation.

She tends to write series so that first novel is the only stand alone book she has. She had trilogy and a quadrillogy and then two duet series that actually make another quadrilogy. And while it looks like she hasn't published in a couple of years, she actually adopted a penname, Cate Glass and has published another trilogy. Writing as Cate Glass she has changed her signature story style, favoring more adventure over dark fantasy.

So fans of Anne McCaffrey may or may not like her work, but I would highly recommend you try her out. Check out her story series and see which one catches your eye and give it a read. Some of you are going to love her.
