Picture the scene.
You read a thread on a board somewhere, on a somewhat controversial/inflammatory theme. You spend the best part of an hour writing, Like, teh Bestest Reply EVAR!!11!!... ...and the board's server goes down. Is that a sign, from the internet powers-that-be, that you really, really need to think twice before posting that post? What would YOU do? Wait patiently before posting anyway as soon as everything's working again. Or thank your lucky stars for your narrow escape? What other internet omens have you noticed? |

What does PHY104 entail then? (totally off the topic)

I would curse myself for not having it done in word. And then I would press the back button hoping to bring up my reply to thread screen from a cache somewhere with my wonderful words of wisdom and cut, paste and save into word.
Otherwise I would just give up and go for lunch. ![]() |

Apo - "Builds on PHY111 to provide a more quantitative approach to key aspects of astrophysics: thermal radiation, the formation of spectral lines, the internal structure of stars, and applications of Newtonian gravity to astrophysical systems such as binary stars."
Clamball - I hit back on my browser, and e-mailed it to myself. Then I thought better of replying for a few hours, before revising the post and wading in anyway... |

The numbering system your uni uses for courses is entirely different than is typical in the US. I would have guessed PHY1xx would be a low-level course, 2XX would be intermediate, and 3 or 4XX would be advanced.
Do you start with much lower numbers (ie not three digit ones) for lower level course, or are the numbers not designed to offer any clue as to the level of the material covered?

![]() But yeah, both 104 and 111 are fairly low level, 1st-year courses. 111 is less mathematical, and designed to be more appropriate for the non-scientists who suddenly decide they absolutely must do an astronomy module... Later this term, I get to write an exam paper! ![]() |

Normally the first number designates year of study: like in my first year I did HR100, HR101, GV100 etc but this year, my courses start with HR9-- for some reason!

What have I done now!
:innocent: [seriously, I'm a little confuzzled...] As for the exam paper, well, it'll follow the usual format, but obviously I can't provide details! 40% will be mandatory, fairly short questions, about the stuff they really should know if they deserve to pass the course. The other 60% will be 4 in-depth questions, of which they have to choose 2. But I've got a lot of work to do preparing the whole thing! |

I copy everything before posting, because several times it has happened to me. That way I can send it to myself via email and await the server to rise again.

If you've not visited GAFF recently, drop by the updates page (NOT the main board) for some news. The Site Guru has returned from dealing with RL issues, and is in the process of a major troll-nuking cleanup, upgrade and move.
