Default Another Major NZ Quake

There has been another major earthquake in Christchurch. Around 13:00 hours today a 6.8 quake struck the city. This time it looks like there have been fatalities as the quake has struck during the lunch period, which is generally a busy time in the central city.

Was wondering the same. I know the phone lines are screwed....Laine can't get through to Auckland, let alone Christchurch. Still waiting to find out about Baby Sister, although Mum talked to Laine earlier and she's okay....

Just found out about it after I went to the doctor's today to get my hand checked out. My immediate concern was for those Mom'ers in NZ, especially after the quakes last year when we went to Aussiecon and lots of Kiwi's were heading home or in the process of finding out about their rello's and friends there. Apparently it was worse then last year's quakes.

It was.

It was less than the 7.1 in September, but that one was 33km deep and struck at 04:00. This one is confirmed at 6.3, 5km deep and centred 10km south of Christchurch city

Striking when it did, at 13:00, it hit in the busiest time of the day in the CBD. There are buildings down and fires in the CBD. Part of the old Cathedral in the Square has collapsed and there are reports of fatalities including two Busses being crushed. They're even fighting the fires with Helicopters and Monsoon Buckets.

The Port of Lyttleton is cut off with the Tunnel closed, and reports from there are that the town has become unlivable.

Just heard this on the car radio on the way to work, with the same number of fatalities Samsara mentioned but with the expectation that'll go up

We don't have any members living in/near Christchurch, have we?

This is a real bad one...

I'm not, Samsara. I DO have very close friends there. Mum lives in Springston, which is part of Christchurch, and Baby Sister and her hubby live in another part of town. Laine moved to the North Island a few years ago. At one point, she was stationed in or near Lyttleton. Now we know the family is safe, the destruction of places she loved has really shaken her up.

The toll as of late last night was about 65, but there are reports that that may be a bit high at this stage, but it may go higher.

It has rained overnight in Christchurch as well as several major aftershocks. Shelter in central Christchurch has been in Hagley Park. There were already large Marquee Tents set up for the annual Ellerslie Flower Show and these were quickly converted into Shelters and the park and tents were officially set up as an Evacuation Centre.

The worst collapse has been the CTV Building, home of Canterbury's local TV station. The building completely collapsed as well as caught fire, this was the building they were using Helicopters and Monsoon Buckets to fight the fire with. The Christchurch Press building has also suffered major structural collapse along with the Pine Gould building. Undoubtedly there are others, but that appears at the moment to be the worst affected along with the collapse of the Cathedral.

The tallest building in the CBD region, the Hotel Grande Chancellor is now in danger of collapse. The building has suffered major structural damage and now has a distinctive lean to it.

Rescue efforts at the CTV Building have been suspended and the specialist NZ Police Rescue Teams have been redeployed to the PGG Building as there appears to be survivors still trapped in there.

The tragedy of the CTV Building is that there was an English Language School in the building, and it appears that several Japanese Students who were there in an English Language class when the quake struck and the building collapsed.

That sad to hear, I had an Japanese Exchange Teacher in senior high school. English wasn't easy for him either.

Good to hear you're OK diogenese as well as your family.

International Rescue Teams have arrived in Christchurch to augment the local SAR Teams onsite. Teams have moved back to the CTV Building, with the team from Japan focusing on that building because of the number of Japanese International Students that were there at the Language School

Water, Sewerage and Electricity is still out in many areas as well as, as you can imagine, in the CBD. Water has been Tankered in.

The death toll is now confirmed at 75, though this is likely to rise as more and more buildings and locations are searched. Reports of 200-300 unaccounted persons are not confirmed at the present, this figure may be exaggerated, but Police are working to sort this out.

The Hotel Grand Chancellor is still standing, but the building is clearly in danger of collapse. This is the largest building in the Central City, and crucially it is very close to the CTV site, which makes it even more dangerous for the teams working on that building as the possibility of it collapsing still exists.

The Army helped in securing the CBD last night as a curfew was enacted. There have been arrests for looters.

Nearly all the historic stone structures in and around Christchurch and Lyttleton that survived Septembers quake have, this time round, suffered serious and extensive damage and for many of them Tuesdays quake has been the final straw. For many, there is no way back and many have simply ceased to be viable and repairable buildings.

OK, I just watched an interview with Mike Yardley, a presenter who worked at CTV wh had his own show there, and was out of the building at the time the quake struck. From what he said, I have a suspicion that the CTV Building should NEVER have been reoccupied. I think some serious questions are going to have to be asked about the state of the CTV Building post the September quake and the ensuing aftershocks after that and prior to Tuesdays.

Lily...and Kugai...I am very glad to hear that you both are ok...I was so shocked to hear about this recent earthquake and how bad it was. Here in Southern California we are very use to earthquakes...and know how frightening they can be.
I hope this will be the last for a long while...after the after shocks calm down that is.
