Gold Mike and Tania UK Tour - Spring 2010

Full details and links are on our webpage at opland-freeman.com/calendar.htm

Mike & Tania
Lanen and I are planning to go to their concert at Denholm Folk Club. It's their only show in Scotland, which is a pity. I'm sure there are many other places up here that would love to have them.

Post here if you have any further news or manage to see one of these concerts.

I got this too and would love to go see them again.

Did you notice the deliberate mistake The show at Birdsedge, Nr Hudderfield on 11th April is in West Yorkshire not North Yorkshire

That should be the closest place for me but being a non driver last time I went there it took forever on the local train.

Steve: at least you and Lanen will be able to here them practicing (again) when they stay with you.

Here they are last night.

About to start the first set.

And in full flight during the second set (this one was on my phone as I don't like using flash during a performance).

This is the only folk club I've ever been to where the interval refreshments consist solely of tea and coffee!

It was also the smallest: there were less than two dozen people in the audience.

Tania, judging by your tour schedule the two of you having some pretty long drives too. What we need is a few more venues in the in-between places .

Hans: the tale is nearly two years old. I parked in a town hall carpark clearly labelled as "event parking" and came out of the concert to find my car locked in. I had to stay in a hotel for the night and had to get my car released by the chief traffic warden.

Saturday's concert was the nearest one yet: 36 miles. Last year's was about 130miles each way.

Here's a surprise -- tomorrow night's show is not where thought it was. Good thing we're staying with the organizers so we didn't go play at the wrong place. If any of you are planning to come see us, it's still in Spalding, but it's in the South Holland Centre Bar (23 Market Place, Spalding, PE11 1SS).

And yes, the one on Sunday is West Yorkshire. They haven't moved the village, I just mistyped.

Lanen and I went to see Mike and Tania at Denholm on Thursday. Their concert was great but the audience were a bit dead - nobody joined in the choruses. The Cross Keys turned out to be a really nice. We drove down there for dinner before the concert.
Here are some pictures from the concert (a little blurred because it was pretty dark in there and I didn't want to disturb Mike and Tania with flash):

Mike and Tania are staying with us at the moment before they head down to Durham. There are still some tour dates left (plug plug...). Come in large numbers and sing the choruses.

Yes, please I know I once said I would look around but nfortunately I just don't know the right people in the right circles... I will always keep my eyes open for possibilities but they haven't presented themselves so far.

You have one of your last gigs on the English east coast, as the crow flies that's only about 100 miles from my home!

We just waved a fond farewell to Mike and Tania, who are now on their way to Bishop Auckland for tonight's concert.

If all goes well, Mike and Tania will be returning to UK shores in July; so if anyone has missed the tour so far you might get a second bite of the cherry this year.

Still no extension of the tour to the Netherlands, though.

As the crow flies it's about the same for each.

As a journey a lot nearer Anneli than Hans. For Anneli it's around 180 kM; for Hans just over 400kM.

Anneli, if you can arrange a sufficiently large event that would make a trip down to London worth while I'm sure Mike and Tania would be interested. Why not email or PM them with some options, and they can tell you any constraints they have in their schedule? (Mike and Tania, correct me if I'm wrong.)

We have tentatively arranged for a concert at a hotel near us on July 9th, but this has still to be confirmed because negotiations are still taking place. I really hope it goes ahead.

Thanks eann, that's really good of you . I haven't seen you for ages either - not since your trip to Walter Scott country all those years ago. We have an entirely new house since then. The view isn't as good, but it's a quieter and more comfortable area.

Perhaps we can meet up with you, Mike and Tania after Elizabeth's Sweet Adelines competiton in Seattle at the end of October? (We can't bring Zorro and Midnight, though - the airlines haven't yet discovered the benefit of cats for detecting volcanic ash in the air. )

Ok, it's now official. Mike and Tania will be returning to the UK for an extra concert at the Stair Arms Hotel, Pathhead, Midlothian, Scotland (that's the hotel on the A68) on 9th July 2010. I don't know all the details yet but I'll let you know once the publicity bumph for this concert has been issued.

I don't know of any other venues yet on this "mini tour" but I'll let you know if anything else pops up. Anneli, are there enough people interested in a South East London event to cover the petrol costs?

I've looked but I don't think I can do this - I was interested in spending some time in Edinburgh but I can't justify the 1/2 day off work to get me there in time and also would have problems getting to the venue

Quote:
Friday, 9 July, 18:30 – 21:00
Stair Arms Hotel, Pathhead, Midlothian, Scotland, EH37 5TX
A special evening of food and music. Details to be announced.

Wednesday, 14 July, 20:30 – 23:30
Friends Provident Social Club, Pixham Lane, Dorking, RH4 1QA

Friday, 16 July 20:30 – 23:30
Norwich Folk Club
Christ Church Centre, Magdalen Road, Norwich NR3 4LA

Sorry you won't be able to make it up to Scotland Kc. The Stair Arms is off the beaten track (unless you travel by car or one of the infrequent buses that go down the A68) but we can give a lift from a railway station to anyone determined to get there. Would the event in Norwich be more convenient for you (although Leeds looks equally far from both places)?

Sorry about your chest infection Anneli . I hope you're feeling better soon . There's an event in Dorking on 14th July 2010 - that's pretty close to South East London.

I really wish I get to one of the concerts but this year I've no spare time at all. If one was on a weekend (Sat or Sun) I might manage it but I saved all my leave for Australia. Next year I'm going to get to one, I'm determined

Anneli - hope you are feeling better. I've had a chest infection recently too, but picking up a bit now.

Alas, Mike and Tania's concert at the Stair Arms hotel this Friday has been cancelled! The supposed reason was a lack of interest, but it was really lack of publicity. There was no advertising (apart from these web pages and word of mouth between friends) until last week, which is far too late. It's a real pity. I was looking forward to it.

There are still concerts in Dorking and Norwich for southern folks. Anneli, did you manage to arrange something in London? If not, I hope you can get to the Dorking concert.

Wish they'd come to Australia ~ I for one, would come and hubby might too (then again you may have to throw in a few country & western-themed songs in to keep him happy ) Probably a bit late for WorldCon as that's only 6 weeks away but maybe after xmas would probably be better, hint~hint, Tania and Mike if you want some southern warmth .

Eann, Mike and Tania still visited us. It was too late for them to change their travel plans, so they came across from Ireland via Scotland on their way to their concerts in southern England. We both feel guilty for introducing them to the Stair Arms people in the first place, but it's not our fault that the people involved wouldn't communicate and didn't advertise the event. But it was good to see Mike and Tania again, and instead of the concert we did have the lovely sound of their practice sessions wafting through our house. They continued on their travels yesterday, and the concerts in Dorking and Norwich are still on. Only 2 days to go before the Dorking concert.
