We've had an explosion of collectors lately on the site. Out of curiousity to figure out how many of us there are, I thought I'd ask everyone that considers themselves an Anne McCaffrey collector sign in on this thread. (Cause I'm too lazy to scan all the topics to cull the names!)
I think I'll even make it a poll! ![]() Anneli, option 2 is just for you! ![]() ![]()

I have to admit I had to have a long hard look at the book cases (yes plural) to admit that I am indeed a collector.

This is the place for it Cheryl, you are right with that. I would think a collector, would come in here all most the first thing they do after coming onto the site to check to see what's new.

I actually go down most forums top to bottom, skipping the ones I'm not insterested in, so this is usually the second one I visit.
I said "reading copies" only. Also I buy ones I think I might be able to resell. I have some DoP stuff besides books, the games and comics, though I may resell some of those, too. (Do I *need* both the graphic novel 3-in-1 AND hte individual issues? Hm. Comics are harder to justify parting with than the games.) |

My "collection" consists of reading/research copies, all cheap paperbacks that I can afford.

I would most certainly say that collecting those old moldy magazines at the prices that they want for them these days, is being a collector...

Interesting that this topic came up as having a new post, but there isn't one.
But it leads me to add my comments on the topic. Yes, I consider myself a collector. My collection is perhaps odd (normal for me), but I hope logical. I have one signed book. A paperback of Moreta that my aunt gave me. She kind of spoiled the gift by reading it first, but it has only been read the once. The rest of my collection are hardcovers. Due to the change in size of typical hard covers in the late 80's, I started collecting the book club editions. I went back and picked up The White Dragon. I am a fan of Whelan so I had to hunt down those rare copies of Dragonflight and Dragonquest in hard cover. So I do not have the typical trilogy in one hard cover, but each individual book. I did stick with the book club of the Harper Hall Trilogy, but only because it is the only dust jacket I like the art on (and those three books always set between Dragonquest and The White Dragon on my self. My last book was A Gift of Dragons and there was nothing written by Anne after that. If her final book is ever revised and published I probably will want a copy of that as well, though I'm not sure in what format. For day to day reading I am migrating to ebooks so I am collecting those as well. They should last much longer than the many copies of the mass market paperbacks I have gone through. |

As long as your collection makes you happy, that's all that matters!
(As for the thread saying there was a new post when there wasn't, I suspect it does that when there's a new vote.)

Does anyone have in their collection a copy of the "textbook" (description by Anne McCaffrey in an interview) that featured Charles Reid's beautiful watercolours of The Smallest Dragonboy? I understand that Anne was given the original prints by Charles and he did not keep copies. I've tracked down 6 images online but I'm wondering if a book was ever released?

I have a couple books signed, some from Dragoncon and one was a gift to me from a dear friend who was a good friend of Anne's and had it personalized to me - that is very special.
My favorite item is a postcard Anne sent me after I mailed her a copy of the drawing my son did of the book cover of Dolphins of Pern. He did a beautiful job and she said she hung the picture on her bulletin board. The card was typed but signed by her. I still have the original picture he drew but since I only access "here" by my Nook tablet I have no way of putting up pictures. In the last year or so I went through my bookcases and began boxes up the books I want to keep, trying to have that be a small amount. That meant I now have a very large box of books by various authors to donate to a nice used book store near us. Trying to have less stuff as we get older!

Cheryl. that would have been very special. There's a youtube post of Anne showing a film crew around Dragonhold : the Charles Reid original art was discussed (first time I heard about them). How lucky you are! And we are very lucky to have you taking care of this website with your experience and knowledge.

I have a couple that I got signed at Dragon Con and a couple that were signed and personalized to me as gifts from VERY kind friends. I am not keeping most of my unsigned books. I have almost all of Terry Pratchett's books signed that I purchased over a number of years from a UK website.
