Default My latest fire-lizard

The husband was reading /looking over my shoulder yesterday and asked why I never posted a pic of my latest fire lizard here

I've been sculpting them ever since I've been reading DRoP (A LOOOOONNNGGG time)

There's been a total of five over the years, the very first was lost in a fire.
The next three made for friends, the last I made for myself for Dragon Con.
(where she went Between).
Every time I made them I learned different, sometimes better, sometimes not way to do things..
I've happened to marry a wonderful modeler, who what work I've seen puts mine to shame but anyhow.
When I decided to sculpt one for my Secret Santa, Leelan offered his expertise.

The wings are totally his design, mine previously were armature wire,Sculpey and cloth or fabric for the sails.

And the shading of her paint is his also. He could explain it to me, but much to my dismay I learned that my vision has deterioated enough that with the lighting we had to work with I couldn't *see* the subtlety of shades. So he stepped in and did the shading.

So here is what her very happy new owner named her,
ZITKA

She looks wonderful Kat! Gorgeous! Kudos to you both.

But wouldn't vloth wings be better is she is meant to travel on the shoulder?
And front claws already designed to hold something, right?

Do you mean have both wings? She does, the closer facing you is folded.Leelan tried to make it look like she was preening...

No,she's not meant to ride on a shoulder. She's made of Sculpey clay, and while lighter than any of her predecessors she'd still be very awkward to carry.
One of the reasons why my personal one went untimely Between.
I'd designed her life-sized(using my forearm) and to sit on my shoulder.
I believe I have a pic of her and myself I'll have to dig it up.
But the sheer weight on your shoulder was uncomfortable and it also ended up making her crack in pieces.

And the front claws were designed using the tridactyl claw reference in the DLG. She doesn't have the ridge running all the way down her tail either but that was artistic license.. I made it but it didn't look *right*so removed it.

Kat, does your personal one live on in your portrait, used in your title?

Actually, sort of. The one I made was a gold... as was the very first.

And her name is Amara. So when Lady Maelin was gracious enough to do my portrait it had to be Amara.

But I have a picture of myself with the*second* Amara I participated in the costume contest in the Weyrfest room that year. Luckily the picture was taken in the hotel room because she started to sustain damage almost immediately. I'll hunt it up later and post it.

O.K. I hunted through pics.. which are woefully disorganized

This was first attempt, sadly I've lost touch with Pat and I don't recall what she named him.

My second I know she too went Between when she fell and shattered

And the last is myself as Journeywoman Kat much prefer Maelin's portrayal. So that's Amara.

By the time the wings are furled and the legs tucked up, I think they would fit better on the shoulder. Kat, did you have any thoughts on size when you were making them?

Not so much... since I actually never intended them to go on your shoulder. Well not until the one I made for DragonCon for myself.

And Tal,yes.. well in reference I read somewhere I can't tell you exactly which book but fire-lizards were the length of an adult's forearm.

Looking at the pics now yes they definitely are very much out of
proportion. But the giftees never complained.. and every time I made one I learned different things soo..

And I do have a pic of the other but frankly I wouldn't dare put it up. I really wasn't happy with her at all. And shudder every time I run across a pic. Though again her owner loved her.

Never mind, Kat, I was just curious, because of all the paintings that show firelizards. Nevertheless, they are very well done. Nice work!

It's from the DLG, and actually, "A newly hatched dragonet is only a few inches long. When one reaches full growth, it is the length of a woman's arm from nose tip to tail tip." We're talking dragonets, there, pre-firelizard; and since I believe firelizards are a little bigger than dragonets, they're probably fairly large.

Just throwin' that out there. ;>

Thanks,Cav. I have to admit it's been years since I've done any re-reading of DRoP though I own them all and most of the companion books including both DLGs

Well, actually, I’m just reading Dragonsong, and in the place where Menolly finds the firelizard queen while she is trying to save her clutch from the see, she says that the creature was only just a little bigger then the human forearm. I’ll try and find it.

Lovely, Got a friend of mine while up here to do an few images of my own bought fire lizards, one is white so I call him Ruth, after the White Dragon and the other is Pallath I don't know when I get the pictures back from her. Ginny.

Mine are made so that if I wanted to have sit on a shoulder, and tail looped around my neck it would work for how long I not too sure, they both have a wire in the tail to make easier to do so.

In I've Ruth in honory of the White Dragon on my desk, Pallath is on my shoulder right now, wish I had a web cam or didn't ran out of film, from the game here in Wausau, Wisconsin The Harlem Globetrotters from Jan. 07, 2010.

Kat...these are delightful as well as beautiful...a few of them might be a bit well grown and over fed...but I just can't see where anyone who was lucky enough to have one them... would complain.
