Just saw fresh footage from Japan. What a devastation, unbelievable! And it's all very frightening with the aftershocks and that damaged nuclear plant...

I saw him. He explained how this was different from Tscherobyl and a "live" meltdown so to speak.
Stil, 30,000 people evacuated just because of it...

I did see that 1 person from Calafonia was killed while watching the waves come in. He was washed away by the waves.

I saw that too, maw. However, I've looked at a number of sites, and while it says "someone in California" it does not say whether the person was a Californian or even an American citizen for that matter. I have seen plenty of people on the web using this incident as an excuse to say "oh yes, dumb stupid Americans again".

I followed your link to the make your own monopoly. It looks pretty cool. I was just wondering what the playing pieces are like though? Are you just finding things yourself, or are you able to use any of the pices provided?

Samsara, the game comes with 4 pawns you can use. I would love to find some Pern type things. Preferably dragon charms. I have had my for a couple of years and have not yet put it together. I have been really busy, hoping to get it all together soon.

There are more than four playing peices but I do not know how many.
I may go with other things if I can not find the dragons. Now that we are in the new house I will have time to fix it up.

Monopoly...I have also been collecting different things over the last couple of years, to someday be able to put together one of these for myself. Only I am planning on using an already made up game as the base and changing it to suit Pern...someday when I'm in need of a new project, I'll get around to it.
Perhaps we should have a special thread set up someday, to show all the different *HOMEMADE* versions members come up with for their own collections?

There are an amazing number of versions of Monopoly. My daughter has one based on the Campus and town where she went to college. I think a lot of colleges have their own versions. We played a lot of board games when I was a kid. One of my favorites was called "Wide World." It was a map of the world and the goal was to be the first to fly your little jet plane to all your assigned destinations and pick up "product cards" from each nation visited. I often thought a version of that might be fun for a Pern game. I know there actually is a Pern board game and I've often wondered what it's like. Anybody here have one?

Sandi...I know that several of us here have the *Pern* board game...and a few of us have even tried to play it...Nefermiw shared photos of her game, but that was quite a while ago now...It should be in the archives somewhere.
Samasara...here we both constantly use *Wikipedia*...in all it's forms. I am always amazed at all the information it has available!!!

Tomorrow is my grandson's fourth birthday. We're having a little party at a pizza place. I think it's great that even the moon is scheduled to put on a show for him. He's really looking forward to it. None of the family has figured out where he got the notion but for the past few months he's been talking about flying in space in a rocket ship. I told my daughter she'd better start setting some money aside for space camp in a few years.
Ginny, be careful how you roll your yarn. If you stretch it too tight it won't work very well. Take it from some one who knows ![]() |

Cilla...I hope Fred does as well as he has in the past!!!
Frogs...growling and Peeping??? I don't think I have ever heard those types of sounds used to discribe frog noises...LOL. Normally you hear the word Peeping used for birds... we have plenty of birds *PEEPING* around here constantly, as we seem to be in the winter/spring birthing area for a number of tyes of them...and they all seem to *PEEP* as well as sing beautifully....Thankfully!!! Sandi...hope your *Birthday Pary* goes well and that you all have a ball. Sooooo he wants to go into space someday...when he's old enough you should read him *The SHip Who Sang* and start him off right!!!

H.S. Lin, I tried very hard to find a decent link on the web that would "show" you what I mean about frogs growling and peeping. No luck. The little tree frogs do peep, after all they are called "Spring Peepers!"

Ah ha! Try this for Spring Peeper sounds! And yes, it is just this loud. This doesn't have the bigger (growling) frog sounds, though.

Oh Cilla I agree...those certainly are *Peepers* !!! It does sound a bit like birds, only birds don't sing at night. I would love to see your mallards, and I do hope that they stay and give you the treat of fuzzy little ducklings.
Last year when we moved in we were entertained, so to speak, by the love makings of a pair of doves...a few days ago they showed up again, in exactly the same spot only now the female (we think???) is HUGE...Lord she's the size of a chicken now...really!!! We are in hopes that at some point this spring we will get to see little baby doves flying around our back garden. Seems every spring our home is inundated with hundreds of birds of in all kinds of species...big one, little ones...great singers and horid sqawkers...lovely humming birds to incredibly beautiful hawks...and then the pitiful scavenging crows. I just love them all!!!

We don't see toads or bullfrogs around here like we once did but there are still lots of little green tree frogs. I enjoy hearing them sing in the night. Plenty of deer in these parts and there are a couple of possums that seem to think they are my pets. It's fun to watch the armadillos too but they really tear things up with all their digging.

Since moving here in our new home, we have seen more varied creatures than anywhere else that we have lived...and we have lived in the high mountains and the real California desert...and none of those areas have compared to what we have seen here, all but in our backyard.
The hundreds of birds previously mentioned, ducks, our pair of doves, a whole rabbit family living in the corner of our yard, a huge colony of ground squirrels trying to overtake our garden, a very beautiful large coyote walking along the path over our low garden wall, not to mention the three very beautiful lizzards and their babies that scurry here and there constantly keeping our property bug free.

Over the weekend, my family went to my great-uncle's surprise 80th birthday party. My great-aunt was able to hide it from him, and he was completely shocked when he came into the room. In the time leading up to the party, my mother and I were joking about how long he'd actually stay at his own party. He's always been notorious for coming to family parties, staying long enough to say hello to everyone, and then leaving.
![]() In all of my life, I've never seen him smile that much. I'm sure given my brief description, you'll understand why we affectionately call him the Grump. ![]() I'm am happy that my great-aunt was able to surprise him. They tried to my grandfather a surprise 70th birthday party 3 years ago, but he showed up in a suit jacket. He knew because my grandfather never wears stuff like that unless he knows that he's going somewhere it's expected of him.

Just finished thoroughly cleaning the basement room the cats sleep in in preparation for the vet's visit on Friday. Yes, I guess it is unusual to have a vet make house calls. I wasn't sure I'd find one, but was lucky and since she does all four cats at once it turns out to be cheaper than 4 individual visits to a veterinary office! Plus, she's really nice!
