My Mother was sent this problem, the link to the answer did not work, but I thought I would let all of you try to figure it out. It is suppose to be a 5th grade problem.
On a bus there were 7 girls each girl had 7 back packs. Each back pack had 7 large cats. Each large cat had 7 small cats. The bus driver was not on the bus. How many legs were on the bus.

7 girls = 14 legs 7 girls X 2 backpacks X 7 large cats X 7 small cats X 4 legs = 2744 legs + 14 legs (on the 7 girls) = 2758 legs.
But how many legs were on the bus? NONE; busses don't have legs.

7 girls x 2 legs = 14
7 large cats x 4 legs = 28 Each large cat had 7 little cats (kittens) so 7 big x 7 small = 49 small cats x 4 legs = 196 My total is 238 legs altogether, 7 backpacks and 4 wheels on the bus ![]() ..... And if the bus driver was on that there bus, it would make it, 240 legs ![]() The wheels on the bus go 'round and 'round, all the day long ![]()

Girls = 7 x 2 legs each (presumably) = 14.
Large cats = 7 girls with 7 sacks each = 49, x 7 cats each = 343 x 4 legs each = 1372. Small cats = 7 girls x 7 sacks x 7 cats x 7 kits each = 2401 x 4 legs each = 9604. Total legs = 9604 + 1372 + 14 = 10990. But there are no legs on the bus; they're inside the bus. There's also an older version that goes:- As I was going to St Ives I met a man with 7 wives, Each wife had seven sacks, Each sack had seven cats, Each cat had seven kits. Kits, cats, man & wives, How many were there going to St Ives? Answers on a .......

Over at the NKT, you did not give us the same numbers.
First, you gave us 7 Girls 2 Backpacks 7 Cats 7 Kits Then you gave us 7 Girls 7 Backpacks 7 Cats 2 Kits Then you said no one got the same answer as the Star Trek group. But...how could we, if we don't have the same information? |

Jube, for your information:
There are 2 rules and 2 rules only: 1. Hans is always correct. 2. In the extremely rare cases that there is amy doubt about whether Hans is correct or not, rule 1 is automatically applied. ![]()

So; the girls, sacks, cats & kits are all sitting in an n-dimensional space with a few random atoms circulating in it?
But then the girls, sacks, cats & kits are also randoms collections of atoms circulating in an n-dimension space. And so are we.

You can talk to yourself as long as you don't LISTEN to yourself. Trust me, that would only get you into trouble.
I have another question. How do you divide negative numbers. I can not remember.

Same way as positives.
If both top numeral (numerator) and bottom numeral (divisor) are positive OR negative: the answer is positive. If you have one of each (either way over): then the answer is negative. http://www.mathleague.com/help/posandneg/posandneg.htm
