Default What colour is bronze?

Please look at the pictures before you vote.

Anne has described her bronze dragons fairly consistently, colour-wise... but what colour do YOU envision them to be?

Option 1: reddish bronze

Option 2: greenish bronze

Option 3: blackish bronze

Option 4: brownish bronze

Option 5: something else?

I imagined Anne's bronzes to be a mixture of brown and gold, but covering a range of shades within this.

I started out the same, until I noticed how often green-gold is used in the text. My internal imagery has shifted accordingly.

Les Edwards consistently favours the reddish/brownish shading of bronze

An early Smallest Dragonboy going for green-gold:
(image found via Hans' site)

Elizabeth Malczynski also doing green-gold bronzes

Rowena Morrill has the best of both: a reddish base colour with greenish highlights.

e.g.:

David Roe's art defies description... And we won't touch the French art with a bargepole....

Steve Weston's larger dragons are all gold, even the bronzes and browns...but I think he's erring towards a paler hue for the bronzes, with hints of grey-green coming in. The same is true of Michael Whelan's work.

*grin*

Today's challenge: find any quotes that identify the shade in the books!

I've been looking but the only thing I've found so far is a reference to graying muzzles.

I always thought of it as a goldish brown. A bit more brown then gold.

Kath, that implies that there are different shades of bronze. Who knows, maybe all four of your examples are valid.

Not necessarily - it could just mean that there are gradations of colour within what could still be a fairly narrow range of shades...or F'lessan waxing lyrical, as Brenda suggests.

Let's see what other quotes we can dig up!

Moreta has some odd descriptions of the gold dragons.

When Alessan and Moreta are discussing Orlith's colour, it's said that queens vary from being so pale that they're more yellow than gold, up to 'dark enough to vie with the bronzes'. But then: Holth is described as looking more bronze than gold due to her age...and dragons tend to grow green/grey as they get older. So are they dark, or green? And then Kadith is described as a 'deep rich bronze' with 'green undertones'.

I'm starting to come round to there being a very wide mix of shades now!

Kath, I've always viewed the greens, blues and browns as covering the whole color wheel. No reason golds and bronzes shouldn't also.

Count me in the "varying" group--as mentioned, queens range in color, so I imagine some are browinsh, some are reddish, some are greenish,

K'vin's bronze is said to be the 'perfect' (as in model color) tan-green.

So I imagine there are bronzes that veer more brown, and bronzes more heavily green. I think some of the blackish/reddish colors go too far off the mark, however.

My book brain seems to think bronze-green but after roleplaying in RPGs it's broadened out to mean a pretty wide range to make them a bit more individual.
