The strange thing is sometimes when I was reading the 9th Pass books I'd think about how all the characters from the earlier ones are dead and gone and feel sad about it, but it never quite seemed real until I read it happening. Like it was just a hypothetical death - almost as if they'd just gone missing and could still be alive somewhere.

Of course the great thing about books is whenever I want I can go back and read Chronicles or DD and she'll be alive again, but somehow it's never quite the same now I know she dies. Also the fact that I had only recently read Chronicles made it worse in a way because all I could think of during that scene was the first time Sallah met Sorka, when she was about 12 and was complaining that being frozen had made her lopsided.

I don't know if any of that makes any sense, hopefully you can figure out what I mean from amongst all the nonsense.

You should totally write that!

I have trouble deciding on a favorite character. In sixth grade I did a book report on "Dragonflight." I was supposed to choose a favorite character and just went with dragons in general. Most of the time, I do like them more than their riders.

From the list above...I do love Lessa (and F'lar to an only slightly lesser degree). She's hard as nails, headstrong, manipulative, but she's capable of great tenderness, at least toward Ramoth, F'lar, Mnementh, and occasionally F'nor. (And F'lessan, I'm assuming, though I never read SoP.)

From what I remember Lessa and F'lessan get on well enough for a parent and child but their relationship is a bit distant because F'lessan was fostered.

It probably doesn't help that after he impressed his parents also became essentially his superior officers.

Of the 9th Pass people, I'd probably go with Menolly. Overall, it's totally Nerilka. Talk about a woman who gave up everything (even though she didn't value it much) to help out in dire circumstances.

F'nor has always been my favorite. His personality, his attitude both have always had an appeal to me. Plus he always struck me as a bit of the unnoticed son...and well still a good person inspite of it

I could not name a favorite character any easier than telling any one which series or single book is my favorite. But after having re-reading the book The Masterharper of Pern and realizing that which ever book you read with the exception of playing/singing music my boyfriend/soulmate/betterhalf Larry fits the character discriptions of Master Robinton. I'll have to upload a picture when I find the right one.

Hey...how come Fax isn't an option? Menolly is the one who made me fall in love with the series. Liked the original books just fine but it was Dragonsong that made it love.

Yeah, I know, OLD post....

BUT...I don't think Nerilka didn't value what she had...it was more SHE wasn't valued by her parents. Very similar to Menolly's situation later on, as far as parental involvement with girl-child. I doubt Yanus would have been so stingly with his Hold's resources as Tolocamp.

I said Menolly, but honestly, I don't think I can really properly choose between her and Lessa. I love them both for different reasons. I love how strong-willed Lessa is and I love how talented and yet utterly unaware of it Menolly is, particularly in the second book, where she makes it to Harper Hall.

I picked Jaxom. The White Dragon was my first intro to Anne's work, and still remains my favorite book of her's. I've read or listened to it 7 or 8 times. It never gets old to me.

That was me. I had just enough time to vote, but not enough time to post before I had to rush off to work.

I voted for Piemur, but there are a lot of other characters that I also think of just as much as Piemur, but Piemur's character really shows in the dark.

Going with Moreta who isn't in the list, maybe even Leri

I've only read all of the books once, though I mean to change that asap! That said, Robinton's ability to network with people and be so charismatic made me pick him.

I do like several other characters but just didn't identify with them quite as much. I like Lessa though her psyonic ability to manipulate events almost cheapened her achievements and made me think her a little OP (overpowered).

N'ton and K'van : they both make me smile when I read their names. I would love to have seen more focus on them in the books. But that's the beauty of Anne's Pern, the lesser characters can also shine. T'gellan would have been an interesting focus too.

I picked Mirrim, because she was the rider I was the most interested in, yet she never got a novel, or even a short story, from her point of view. I mean, Menolly's a great character and I love her, but what's more compelling? The story of the first woman Bard in a while (i.e. in only one generation, according to MHoP), or the first woman to ride a fighting dragon in a series which is supposed to be about dragons, in at least a few centuries (as we can assume since there were no female greenriders among the Oldtimers, or they probably would have been mentioned at some point). Mirrim's so incredibly important for Pernese history, not just breaking, but smashing the Weyr's glass ceiling, but she never gets a short story, or even a chapter from her point of view. All we see is her "bratty" behaviour when she's still a kid, and then her "proddy" behaviour from the not exactly reliable point of view of Jaxom, then later a bunch of other characters mentioning how she's "calmed down" since becoming weyrmates with T'gellen. The only person who even tries to be Mirrim's friend (besides Brekke, but she's more parent than friend, and is then too wrapped up in her own problems to give Mirrim any on-page support) is Menolly, and it's sadly only eluded to in a couple scenes.

Like I said, I love Menolly, but I would have preferred to have Mirrim be the subject of the YA novels. Sometimes the series post-Dragonquest seemed more like The Harpers of Pern, and oh, look! Sometimes there's Dragons! The Harper characters in general are much better written, and are interesting, but it's not music students who drew me to this series.

When I think of how Mirrim could have been the perfect character to actually describe weyrling training in more detail, and get the "school story", but instead we got a bunch of catty mean girls teasing the Smart Girl ... I mean, why couldn't we have had both?

I wonder if at some point Harper Hall was going to be its own thing, but somebody suggested to Anne to instead make it part of Pern's universe, and because she wanted to write about Harpers/Bards (even though it's dragons that more people are interested in, and that sell books) that's what happened. "Hey, why not have your Bard-in-training adopt a bunch of mini-dragons? Just slot her into Pern, and you don't even have to do that much more world-building?"
