Re: What is Happening, part II
I used to cook oxtail regularly when I was solo with two small children. We'd eat the vegetables out of it the first night and then I'd put more veges in and we'd have the oxtail and vegetable soup...

Re: Runner of Pern
I'd also expect that a "Hold Runner" would be a messenger within the Hold and its associated cots. Much like our local Posties here who travel on foot with Postal bags shoulder to hip on either...

Re: Runner of Pern
Another reason why you might use a human runner rather than a runnerbeast is the same reason why the settlers here used ox-trains rather than a horse and dray. Food. Oxen could be let out to graze...

Re: New MoM playground?
Probably tofu, Ginny. It's made out of soyabeans, looks like a dense cheese and has very little flavour until it's added in cooking. I'd rather have the mushrooms.

Re: New MoM playground?
I did have a recipe for Boston Baked Beans that I liked, and it was good for taking to group picnics in a haybox - basically a carton full of crumpled newspaper with the casserole dish full of beans...

I'll try all of those - once. My latest successsful experimental cooking was meat loaf in a muffin pan - great for individual servings as I live on my own. We won't mention some vegan hamburgers I...

Re: New MoM playground?
I doubt ordinary candles would be good for the environment. Neither would the aluminium used for teelights. Cardboard and paper would probably disintergrate. It isn't hard to make a lotus out of...

Re: Pern's Population
A few more thoughts to complicate the population issue. The settlers were genetically screened for disease in a form of eugenics. So that assumes they were all healthy and remained healthy through...

Re: New MoM playground?
We'd have to do it in the right wind too - if we didn't the lanterns would finish up in the CBD. Our fireworks are fired off from a barge anchored in the harbour and if it's windy then the whole...

Re: New MoM playground?
We often have "Christmas in July" or "Midwinter Christmas" but there's more point in it here. Everybody knows "Christmas" is all about snow, and jingly bells on sleighs and heavy winter food. Which...

Re: What is Happening, part II
Meanwhile it was getting rather wild here. 113kph is over 70 miles an hour - too fast for the baggage handlers to go out to the plane to unload it. I wouldn't have liked to be on that plane when it...

Re: What Weyrlings Do
They'd learn how to take care of, and probably make, their dragon harness. Then they'd have to learn all their teaching songs. Any time left over I'd guess they'd be general gofers and message boys.
