Re: What is Happening, part II

So did I. I walked into the electronics store which offers me a discount, looking for a portable hard drive since the one I thought I was using wasn't working properly and "dropbox" managed to...

Re: What is Happening, part II

One of my Siamese totally freaked another tenant when I was living in a rooming house. He was Chinese, and not used to having indoor cats at all, leave alone one that was constantly making so much...

Re: New MoM playground?

Since nobody can visit Robinton Island at the moment, maybe we need a new island headquarters? This does look like the nearest to Pern that we can get on Earth - it and its flora and fauna are...

Re: Zel's Automotive Antics & Occasional Distractions.

Did you know the top of that Lawson tree makes an excellent Christmas tree? It will live in a bucket of water for a couple of weeks without dropping pine needles all over the floor. One hedge on...

Re: What is Happening, part II

I've had my first dose of Pfizer - it gave me a very sore arm, but so did this year's flu vaccine. I have to have it in my right arm, there's too much scarring from a failed BCG (TB) vaccine in my...

Re: Zel's Automotive Antics & Occasional Distractions.

Well, according to the great Doctor Google - a vehicle with the same silhouette is still made, it's a "Volvo Estate Wagon," which is bigger than their regular station wagon and also comes in plug-in...

I've been watching the Tokyo Paralympics. Mainly the swimming, because that's what's been on every time I turn on the TV.

Re: Zel's Automotive Antics & Occasional Distractions.

Isn't an estate bigger than a station wagon? Or is it only that one is European and the other American? Anything other than a Volvo estate would've either flipped or finished up in the river when...

Re: What is Happening, part II

Meanwhile the Sydney Delta Covid outbreak has "jumped the ditch" (crossed the Tasman Sea) and we're in Level 4 lockdown. That means only Supermarkets, Chemists, Dairies and Service Stations are open...

Re: Wherry, wherefore art thou wherry

That makes sense, given Anne's use of collective nouns like "herdbeast" and "burdenbeast," and whers, like dragons, were the product of genetic engineering whether you take Anne-canon or Todd-canon...

Re: Wherry, wherefore art thou wherry

I'm thinking wherries come in various sizes and the bigger ones probably prey on the smaller ones, which would solve the problem of what they eat. Carnivores have to have prey of some kind. And,...

Re: Favourite Weyr/What Weyr would you live in?

Monaco Bay, with Southern as a second choice. I'm a Southerner already and would prefer to live near the sea, though not so close that I'd get washed away in a bad storm or tsunami.

Re: Wherry, wherefore art thou wherry

Currently I'm trying to make an illustration which includes a wherry. And that creates problems - starting with "protofeathers." Dinosaurs are supposed to have had "protofeathers" so putting them...

Re: New Pern Books !

"Dray-beasts" are traditionally heavy horses. Yoking 8 at a time suggests oxen rather than horses. From reading ancestral settler diaries, oxen were preferred to horses for burden-beasts here (In...

I think if she intended it to be a sitar she'd have mentioned the sympathetic strings - the instrument is notoriously difficult to tune and keep tuned. I had a friend who played it in school...
