Re: What is happening

We were all sitting here in the living room doing our own thing when Jazzy barks once and we here something come crashing through the pet door we looked over and there was Aries, the goat, standing there with several inches of broken chain hanging down.

He came in and made himself right at home. Getting into the cat food, until I took that away from him. Then he went after George's (rabbit) food. He started to follow Jennifer up the stair, then went to looking for food.

Mom called neighbor who luckily had a chain we could barrow. I paid Jennifer to go up and get it. It took a butter tub full of George's food to get him to follow her. After that he went with no problems

Glad no one was seriously hurt in the incidents. I agree that people seem to forget how to drive when it snows/rains. It is annoying.

May everyone have a great weekend.

Re: What is happening

LOL Mawra, sorry but that made me laugh. Did anybody think to shoot a picture?
Aries isn't as dumb as he looks, eh? And what under the double moons is a pet door, he didn't come through one of those small cat doors, did he?

AnnMarie Feb 15 2014 11:50 AM

Re: What is happening

Hans, pet doors can be large enough for a mastiff. So yeah, Aries could definitely get in there.

mawra Feb 15 2014 02:20 PM

Re: What is happening

Ours is large enough for a large dog to get through. Aries has no trouble at all.
No pics, everyone here was laughing. It was not something we expected. I'm just glad neighbor had a chain we could borrow.

I would rather he comes in when he gets lose instead of having him run off.

Hans Feb 15 2014 05:54 PM

Re: What is happening

So the pet doors are big enough to let a person in... Uh...

Priscilla Feb 15 2014 06:01 PM

Re: What is happening

That kind of negates the "security" of locks on doors, doesn't it? The only dog doors I've ever seen were very small. They'd let in a cat or a dog about the size of a dachsund. Maybe this is more common in other parts of the country?

mawra Feb 15 2014 09:41 PM

Re: What is happening

There is no security with that pet door. There is a piece that you can put in to block the door, we never use it for that. We only put it in when I let Aries or the rabbit lose.

It is very rare when someone is not home. We don't really worry about it. No one is going to come inside without us knowing. We have some very loud alarms. Aries is usually the fist to yell when someone comes by.

Re: What is happening

My nieces and nephew prefer to go in and out the pet door rather than opening the door. Kibby has came in the pet door, just to prove that she can.

Allen Feb 15 2014 11:06 PM

Re: What is happening

I used to have a pet door large enough for my 225 pound Mastiff. Definitely big enough for a person. But what person in his right mind would want to crawl through a pet door and come face to face with the Mastiff that lives there? At least that was my thoughts at the time.

Now my Mastiff lives outside. A person from the phone company once asked me (in conjunction with setting up a service call) if I had an alarm system, like perhaps ADT. I replied no, I had D-O-G.

mawra Feb 16 2014 11:44 AM

Re: What is happening

If someone has a pet door that big, I would avoid that house. You probably don't want to meet who the door was for.

Allen Feb 16 2014 01:14 PM

Re: What is happening

Plus, it was on the back side of the house, in the fenced back yard. Malachi could clear a standard 40-inch chain link fence in one leap, too. Imagine adding that into the mix. Thief starts in through dog door. Thief looks up from low position to find Maggie (female Mastiff, 170+ pounds, and definitely the aggressive/protective element of the pair) and Malachi (220+ pound male with an attitude about anything that upsets Maggie) staring down at him. Closest fence is about 50 feet away, if he can back out the pet door without Malachi grabbing him by the head. Then, if he makes it to the fence and over it, he finds out that Malachi is still right there with him, having cleared it more easily than him.

This would be the point where most would wet themselves....... again.

Re: What is happening

If I was going to break in a house it would not be one with a huge pet door.

Priscilla Feb 16 2014 07:14 PM

Re: What is happening

I cannot imagine you breaking into any house, no matter what the size of the pet door!

And, more snow! I have to say I am done with this winter. I like snow, but this is a bit much.

How are your son's headaches, Cheryl?

Re: What is happening

last I heard we are suppose to get a winter mix tonight. If we do they might postpone Kibby speech competition. I can only hope. I NEED to work on her centaur costume for convention this weekend.

FINALLY have heard back from the bank - they've given us the OK for the mortgage. Now just the minefield of legal stuff to take care of - hopefully the lawyers will be slightly less clueless than the bank seemed to be!

Re: What is happening

Challenge we have now is that it's estimated that the legal stuff will take around 4 weeks to complete. We need to be out of here four weeks last Friday. So we're left in a situation were we're probably going to need to rent for a week or two.

We're actually meeting up with the current householder on Saturday to have a better look around with regards to where furniture will fit etc and to look at the few pretty minor issues that were raised in the survey in person. Given that they're moving into rented accommodation (which is apparently largely organised), we're hoping that it may be possible to arrange to effectively rent the property from them for a couple of weeks before the paperwork is all finalised. Not an ideal situation, but would save us having to effectively move twice - which we'd really rather not have to do.

Priscilla Feb 20 2014 04:01 PM

Re: What is happening

When we bought our house it was empty. We asked the owners if it would be okay for us to start moving our stuff in "renting" from them for the month or so before the paperwork was finalized. It made the end move much smaller and simpler. Also, we were able to get our breakable items over here quietly and safely.

Moonlady Feb 20 2014 11:10 PM

Re: What is happening

Congrats and good luck with the moving.

Please read this article about my friend's daughter's Bat Mitzvah. It shares about a wonderful, inclusive Jewish community. Also, the Bat Mitzvah girl was amazing.

Thank you for sharing Moonlady.

After playing Are You The Werewolf with Todd McCaffrey I went to a tribute to Anne. It was nice. Now I am off to the dealers room before going to a Writer's work shop. Kibby is spending most of the weekend gaming. Tonight is the costume contest, the centaur costume only needs a few tweeks.

Re: What is happening

I hope you have a wonderful time, maw! Did Todd sign the book for you and did Kibby find a Pony to get signed? I sort of miss conventions, but finding a hotel room just became too much trouble! So, it's Disney for us, where we never seem to have trouble getting a room! :D

You are welcome Mawra. Have a great time at the Con.

Priscilla, I miss them too. However, I hope to go again in the near future with or without kiddos. :erm:;):D

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The writer workshop I went to today had us write a 100 word hook to get the readers into the story. It had to have a M.C you had to say gender, age, race. There had to be something happening and leave the readers with questions. We only had 10 min. we all read what we wrote. Then the panelist told what they like & did not like.

THEY LIKED WHAT I WROTE. The only negative they had to say was that it needed tightening up. The said they like the way my M.C was written. I wrote that she had said some words that she would get her into trouble if her mother had heard her. They really like that, it was something a 12 year old girl would think. She was very believable.

On the panel was Alen Wold, Darcy Wold, Mike Allen & R.S. Belcher. One or two of them are editors as well as writers.

Re: What is happening

That is wonderful, maw! Good for you.

Jeff suggested that tv personalities must sleep with a "mouth stretcher". Look at them. Their mouths open from ear to ear and every bit of every tooth is showing. I swear these people have more teeth than the rest of us. I also think they are "taught" to do this because the reasoning is that people who grin really big are perceived to be more honest and trustworthy. Yeah, crocodiles also grin really big just before they eat you!

Re: What is happening

They loved the rewrite of the hook much better then the first. The hook is about a 12 year old girl who finds a box in a river when she looks for her fishing hook that snagged on something. When she gets the box to shore & starts wiping it off the box is worm, not cold and seemed almost alive.

:frolic::frolic::frolic::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo:

They LOVE that part. Tammy was taking the workshop with me and said that she thinks they liked mine the best. My writing is not total crap. I can write something good.

In case you can't tell I have problems with confidence, I have none. Tammy even said I should go to Dragoncon next year & do the writer's track. I think if I went to a couple of more workshops I could learn a lot & be a lot better.

Here's some pics of a necklace I finally finished. I started it last year when I was in Wyoming on vacation.

This style is called a Pan collar necklace or Peter Pan collar necklace. The rings are made out of 18 gauge, silver plated wire. There's almost 20 yards of it, hand coiled, hand cut, and then woven into the piece you see here.
