Re: What is happening
I want to extend my condolences to you and yours too, Hans. I read about this the morning you first posted it, but didn't take the time to post then. We went out of town for most of that weekend, and while I had my tablet along, typing on a touch screen is a pain in the rump for me. Time gets away from me with my new evening shift hours, and I realized today I hadn't said anything.
Hans, I'm sorry for your loss. You know that we will be here for you when you feel like returning, or simply have the time to check in. |
Re: What is happening
Oh no Hans, that's terrible news.

Re: What is happening
Kibby starts her first college class tomorrow. She is only taking the one photo class this summer.

Re: What is happening
I know there is at least one other person here who has a birthday today and I'd like to wish them a very happy day! :cake:
We all went out to dinner Saturday night. There was a live band playing 60's and 70's music. About half way through our dinner an old fellow got up and started dancing. You had to see him! In his mid-70's; flannel shirt, jeans, suspenders and a Yankees baseball cap "moving and a grooving"! The food was good, so was the band, but the extra entertainment made the evening! |
Re: What is happening
I too know of someone with a birthday today and wish her a continuing happy day .
It's nice to have the family make a special fuss of you on your birthday. You don't need expensive presents to make the day yours |
Re: What is happening
Hans, not being around much I just read your message! I am so sorry for your loss!! I hope that your family has come together in this time to lean on each other as they need!! Know that you and your family are in my thoughts!!

Re: What is happening
We are "Golden Oldies", Lily! I hope your day was filled with family, friends and fun!
Today I am picking up my daughter's birthday gift from the framing person. This coming weekend is Memorial Day weekend and because Jenn's birthday is the 28th she is taking that day off as well, giving her a 4 day weekend. The band Mike plays in is in a Battle of the Bands at one of the casinos on Sunday so they will be going to that. |
Re: What is happening
I hope everyone has a nice weekend.

Re: What is happening
Yes I had. We had a very quiet weekend, just my husband and me. Yesterday our granddaughter (7,5 years old) came to visit. She had an extra day of from school, and that means a lot of puzzles to make, playing with barbie and friends an building all kind of constructions with building blocs that are called "clics" in the morning and in the afternoon a visit to the indoor playground. It's still too cold to play outside here, in The Netherlands.:(

Re: What is happening
Bit depressed today
My furry Feline friend, Garfield's been missing since Tuesday afternoon. Done all I can to spread the word locally and can only hope he's holed up somewhere and will come home soon. |
Re: What is happening
Oh dear! I hope he returns to you safely! Where we used to live our cats would go outside during the day. Once, one of them was gone more than a week but she did come back! I hope Garfield will too! Crossing fingers!

Re: What is happening
I know. Friend of mine had that happen to her last year, so I am hopeful.

Re: What is happening
Miserably cold and raining. Anyone in upstate New York with the snow!? :faint2:
Did your poor kitty come back yet, Kugai? Still crossing fingers. |
Re: What is happening
No.
I'm still hopeful, but with no word from anywhere (local Vets, SPCA. Cats Protection et al), I'm slowly beginning to think that somethings happened to him. |
Re: What is happening
We have a storage unit in this place where they not only have units, but the customers operate out of them like a flea market. Friday we spent the day there, me making jewelry and trying to sell it and my wife and I going through boxes and tubs of stuff, sorting, pitching, and pricing things. She made a whopping $3. I made a ring and worked on a full Persian weave necklace, but made zip in sales. After buying lunch, that put us down about $10 or $11 for the day.
Saturday we went to my sister's house for a cookout. Mom lives there (she has her own house on sis's property), so it's become the gathering place for the various holiday get togethers. What isn't part of the tradition is me coming down with a sore throat. I got little sleep Saturday night, and have felt slightly better than death warmed over Sunday and today. I just called in to work today ( I now work 3 to 11 PM). When we went to Hannibal, Mo. in April for our daughter-in-law's surgery, I sat in the waiting room making wire wrap rings. I made several out of a single piece of wire, then tried making a different style with multiple wires. (There's a poor pic of the ring in my chain maille jewelry thread on the NKT) My wife loved it, and glommed onto it for herself. This morning she realized she had lost it. She was almost in tears. So now I've started mentally designing its replacement. I know what I want it to look like, now I only hae to figure out how to make it that way. |

Re: What is happening
That is lovely! Am I seeing a heart as part of the design? Your work is so intricate. Do you use tweezers to twist the wire? I've tried to use wire to make hangers for cross stitch ornaments and made a mangled mess. When you began making these did you have some "oh yuck, that's awful" end results or did they just always work out the way you wanted?

Re: What is happening
I've had about 3 real failures, 2 of them involving some 20 gauge sculptured wire that I'm VERY disappointed in. It was expensive compared to other 20 gauge wire, and it won't hold shape worth a tinker's damn. I use wire that's called medium temper or half-hard. It holds up fairly well. As for tools, the coils and curves are done with a pair of pliers with round jaws, for the most part. They have no flat surface to them. I also have a "Thing-A-Ma-Jig"; it's a plastic tool that can be set up for bends and curves. It's sold at Michael's, Hobby Lobby, and Jo-Ann Fabrics under that name.
Yes, that's a heart next to the S. I bent the silver wire in half very tightly, then used the Thingamajig to form it, bent it to the angle you see, and used the rest of the wire, along with the tail of the S for the ring. So there are only 1 piece of copper wire and 1 piece of silver wire, both square, making up the "body" of the ring, wrapped in 26 gauge gold-colored wire to hold it together. To give you an idea of size, the ring is a size 7 (U.S.). From the top of the S to the bottom of the copper curlycue it measures 25mm, or 63/64th of an inch (.98"). The heart measures just under 11mm (.42") across the "lobes" and about the same high. |
Re: What is happening
Cheryl, I hope all is well and that you were not close to the train explosion this morn.
I have made a couple of necklaces by macromaying wire. All the wire was the same color, now I want to try it with different color wire. |
Re: What is happening
That ring looks pretty great and special, Draco. Good luck with recreating the one for your wife.

Re: What is happening
That is good to hear, Hans.
We found out that Kibby was suppose to be getting social security through Hubby's disability. She got all the back money in one check. It was enough to get her a new computer, clothes and for us to take a short trip to the beach next week. Hubby, Kibby and I have not take a trip just the 3 of us since Kibby was about 4 years old. |
Re: What is happening
That's good to hear Mawa

Re: What is happening
Yesterday was my daughter's 30th birthday. Several years ago I made her a cross stitch picture of an underwater/above water scene with dolphins, coral, bright-colored fish and crashing waves. I finally found a place that could do a good job framing it and I was glad that she liked it. Jeff gave her a good sized check to go toward some dental work she has to have this summer. She and Mike are taking a short trip to Newport, Rhode Island in about a month as their birthday gifts to each other.
Oh, yes. I also had my hair straightened again yesterday. It lasts about 6 months and I love it. Funny that so many people get "permanents" to make their hair curl, but I want mine straight. Will Kibby continue to get social security checks now and is there a cut off age when they will stop for her? |
Re: What is happening
I clicked on the "Contact Us" button and asked a question. Is that function monitored? I ask because I haven't heard back in about a week.
I wanted to know if there's a way to change my username without losing everything (post count, title, password and so on.) I'm sort of tired of being one of the very few that doesn't go by their name. I'd just rather be me (Allen) here, than Draco any more. |
Re: What is happening
Draco, that email address should be checked by Cheryl but I know she doesn't have or can spend much time on the forum.
So, I checked and see no way you can change your user name yourself apart from registering as a new user. Howev, as admin, I can change your user name. So if you say which one you want, in here or via pm, I will change it, so only your user name will change and nothing else. Sorry, I see you already gave the name you want to use. But you need to now that I changed it because you will need to use that name to log in. Your password will stay the same. So... I need you to acjknowledge that you have read this post. Then you know that, if you can not login as Draco, you need to log in as Allen. |
Re: What is happening
Many thanks, Hans. I'll feel a little more like one of the family, going by Allen. After all, I've had that name longer. :D

Re: What is happening
Another huge tornado in Oklahoma. I hope everyone will be safe! :-(

Re: What is happening
Right as of birth in real life and as of now in MoM virtual life Draco is now Allen :)
|
Re: What is happening
Welcome, Allen! ;)

Re: What is happening
Soon, some new person will be reading old posts and will be saying, "Who is this Draco person that they say made nice jewelry, and where can I find him?"
|
Re: What is happening
Don't worry, we'll send them in the right direction! :D

Re: What is happening
Right, hadn't thought of that. The only time the name Draco will show up will be in other people's posts. It could be a tiny bit confusing but all of Allen's beautiful jewelry posts will now be under his real name.
In other news, the actress Jean Stapleton has died. She played many parts but I remember her as Archie Bunker's wife, Edith, in the tv series All In The Family. I loved that show. I had cousins who (unfortunately) really believed a lot of the stuff Archie spouted. Then there was my aunt Dorothy who was JUST like Edith and even looked like her! I learned a lot from that show. |

New names will keep us on out toes.
Maybe Hans should change everyone's name and see if people can figure out who is who? |
