Default F'lar

Here's the long awaited and much over due portrait of F'lar that I promised.

P.S. Sorry this one took so long to get put up, as I've had it done for about six month, but my husband and I have recently moved into a new home and I have had so many other things to do than my artwork, in just getting us settled in, that putting up my last two *Pern Portraits* they got push into the dusty recesses my mind...

Thank you GHarris and Talisath for bringing this to my attention I really hope you two enjoy it.

Apart from the fabulous portrait I especially like the star stones and the group of dragons flying in formation. Such nice details!

Ooooooh, wonderful! Great details as Hans pointed out, and I love his amber eyes.

Do I just have Steven on the brain from Hans's boat picture, or does F'lar's jaw and mouth bear a resemblance to our StevenB?

Oh, joy! This is like the "game" 'I Spy, With My little Eye'! (well, sort of). Absolutely gorgeous. I think I see the Red Star in the upper right corner? The caves kind of remind me of catacombs, or maybe bee hives. Another detail I love is the ribbing on the dragon's neck. Wonderful!

Hans...thank you dear friend, for your very kind comments.

Cheryl... I don't really see any of Steven's face in this portrait of F'lar...but you're welcome to see whomever you choose in it . I am however very happy that you enjoyed this so much. I really put a lot of thought into getting F'lar's eyes just that right shade of amber.

AnnMarie...glad to know you like it

GHarris...thank you for reminding me to put this up and I am very happy you liked it.

Talisath...so glad it was worth your very long wait...and thank you so much for your lovely comments.

Starbuck...thank you kindly and WOW I've made it all the way to Russia with my art...to bad it wasn't in person. Talk about a great county for beautiful art!!!

Peter...thank you my friend...F'lar's got it all over Tom Cruise [IMO]

Cilla...Thank you HS for your lovely comments...I loved putting in as many of the details as I could remember...plus a few that I had floating around in my artistic brain.

Dragongirl...Of all the MoMer's I was hoping that F'lar's *Super Fan* would really like this portrait of him...think of it as my send off for you going into the Navy...you can make a copy of it and take it with you to drool on.

*R*...WoW what a lovely compliment !!! Your not alone with not being able to choose a favorite...every time I do a new one I think *this one is the best I've done so far*...but now these days... whenever I finish a new portrait, I just look over at the copy of last portrait I did of Anne,[the one that she now owns ] and I have to admit that one is my most favorite of the Pern portraits, although I do really love Robinton too...well those two then...

I do have [an all time favorite one] that I did for my family in honor of my Grandmother, that I believe is the best portrait I have ever painted. Perhaps I'll share that one of these days here on MoM!!

Dawna... Thank you so much for the wonderful comments...glad to hear you enjoyed this one.

Starbuck...your English is very good indeed. The one thing I have always enjoyed about MOM is that there are so many interesting people from all over the world...a few have become very close personal friends of mine. I have even personally meet several of them when my husband and I traveled to Copenhagen to Eurocon...one of my most wonderful memories. You can see photos of that trip somewhere here in the MoM archives! We even met some very interesting and friendly people from Russia on that trip.

Steven...thank you dear friend for your lovely compliment...I actually did this and a couple more while we were looking for our new home...it kept me from going nuts with all the stress that is involved here with selling your old home and buying a new one...not to mention the actuall job of moving all of our *STUFF*...and OH Lord do we have a lot of stuff!!!...thankfully we had a few very willing and helpful hands with the BIG move.

Your work is as beautiful and dynamic as usual, Maelin!

If I may offer some constructive criticism?

One of the things that really bugs me about bronze dragons in Pern fandom art is that they never really seem to turn out... bronze. They always turn out kind of orange. While Mnementh's pose here is really great (though his wings, even foreshortened, are pretty small), I think you lost out on an opportunity to do some really great bronze coloring on him -- you kind of settled for orange. And you're such a GREAT colorist, it's just that much more of a shame.

Un-oxidized bronze is definitely more of a coppery-gold mix, almost like brass. But really oxidized bronze can be nearly completely green; most bronze tends to fall somewhere in between dark brown with green and gold overtones.

Jody Lynn Nye's short story in the DLG, "The Impression," has a really great description of Golanth as being "...a flawless combination of gold and green and tan that looked like the dappled sun through leaves..." If that's the ideal shade of bronze on Pern, the "flawless" shade, that leads me to think that Pernese bronzes are closer to the oxidized shade than not -- which would make sense, since they fall between golds and browns!

Anyway. Tangent aside: it's really a very lovely piece, and if it weren't such a peeve with me throughout Pern fandom, I probably wouldn't have even noticed it. But since you're so rad with color, I'd really encourage you to experiment with new mixes next time and see what comes out!

Lady M.

Hidden while , I understand, I've got some art stuff that has gold and sliver in it, not sure were during the and all the real life toss our way!.

Loved the Red Star in the background of the Star Stones. Which I sported before the dragons in fight. Also correct me if I wrong but its F'lar watching the Red Star get closer and how he believes in the Laws that Weyr(s) follow and he and Mnementh watching it get closer to rain down on Pern?.

I see I think a blue by his tail but I don't see what P'ter asked

@ At Lady M and Hans another to add to Han's Site?

Also a comment about finding the right shade of bronze on Pern by the then Masterweaver in DF.

Granath...thank you so much for the lovely compliment...I do enjoy creating and sharing my portraits with all the fans of Pern.

Cavatica...Thank you for the compliments.
Since you also do a bit of creative artwork and in that you have developed your own likes, dislikes and opinions concerning that art work, I think I will leave you to them.
Bronze is probably one of the a most difficult and arguable colors in the art field. If you ask ten artists, you will more than likely hear at least seven different answer variations and color combinations, on how to acheive the proper ballance, that will produce an acceptable to perfect *Bronze*color. Since you and I don't seem to even agree on what the color orange looks like, I think we would have a rather fruitless discussion about the different shades of bronze that are out there.

Starbuck...I am also very glad you found your way here on MoM!! I am also a huge *Star Trek* fan as is my husband, but he isn't a Pern reader... so like you I also wanted more good talk about Anne McCaffrey's worlds. You will find ALL you could possibly want here and plenty of fans to chat about it with too.

Ginny...Thank you kindly for your compliments and yes that is the Red Star in the distance.

Keiva...I'm very happy that your enjoying this new portrait... these portraits have always given me a great deal of joy in being able to create them and to share them with some of Perns fans. Thank you so much for your lovely comments.

But... we HAVE to agree on what color "orange" is. Because it's orange. Red + yellow = orange. It's... there's a fruit called an orange, and it's... it's orange! Orange is friggin' orange. :P Oh, sure, there's yellow-orange and red-orange and all the shades in between. There are probably a thousand hex codes and Pantone shades representing variations of "orange." But as a baseline... I mean... what you've got there is orange. If I held a fruit up to it, it'd be the same.

I'm not trying to insult you. I think it's a really great piece.

I'm just-- I thought we all agreed on Roy G. Biv? CMYK? RGB? No?

Cavatica...No insult taken...but it still doesn't make it orange!!!
Hold up all the fruit or veggies you want to it...but it still won't make it orange
Basically because it isn't orange, believe me, I was there when I created it.
It might not be what you consider bronze...but it isn't my idea of orange either.

Of course the chances are that the "orange"/"bronze" in the photo is of a different hue to that in the original?

I think such "orange" colour is made specially - under colour of eyes of F'lar. And colours of dragons just as a skin of the human, have many shades. And in a picture the decline is drawn - during such time because of the sun of colour there can be others. Besides it is Rukbath - it can have other shades, than at the our Sun.

Maw...you could try a grid painting. Kind of like they do with cross stitch diagrams. If I was going to fly somewhere to do a mural for someone it would have to start with Hans...he asked first

Ginny...I'm not at all sure what your talking about...but to try and help here.... Maw was kidding me about going all the way across the country to paint her a mural, something like this portrait I did of F'lar and Mnementh.

To the rest of you MoMer's who are involved the great *Orange* discussion....GOOD LUCK!!

Orange is orange to me and that includes all hues of said colour - after all, one will always have light to dark shades of a colour and I'm not even an artist (more of a doodler ) so having said my 2 cents, I'm now leaving said discussion. AND only because I want to say that F'lar's pictorial viewpoint is quite exceptional. If I was a F'lar fan, I'd be drooling too, providing that Dragongirl lets me in too but as my favourite dragonriders would be either Jaxom or F'lessan I'll just sit here and enjoy

About the orange discussion.. I don't know... it's not that orange to me. A little bit maybe, but...

Right behind Mnementh's left wing, about level with F'lar's nose, there's an "orange" () dragon sunning itself on a ledge.

FWIW, I don't think Mnementh looks orange. I don't think he looks Pern-bronze either (which has always been described as the green-gold-brown mix rather than one of the more orangey shades of possible bronze out there) - I think he looks Amber... but he's also viewed at sunset/(sunrise?), so although he's a far redder shade than I'd ever have chosen for a bronze dragon, I think he's just right for the lighting.

And he's gorgeous, as is F'lar. It's another absolutely superb piece, Maelin.

Jube...thank you kindly for your compliments.

Talisath...your right that is Ramoth, sunning herself on her Queens ledge. There also happens to be four other dragons sunning themselves on their own ledges. Two blues, one green and a brown.

Peter...you mean Ramoth...right!!!

Kath...Thank you so much for such lovely comments.
