Sounds too good to be true, right? But the publishers themselves are doing it.

Free books as in... the legacy of Jim Baen?
I hope so, his memory deserves that!

Why are we argggghhhhing?

Seems a clever business model -- offer the first book of an established series for free, potentially hooking new readers who haven't been moved to buy/try the first book but who might then happily buy the rest.

They need to do better research.
Turtledove's Settling Accounts: Return Engagements is not the first book in the series. It might be the first Settling Accounts, but there are seven other books in the The Great War series before this one.

I agree, even with them chosen not the first book in a series. It worls and Jim Baen's public library has proven it. Sales got up for writers courageous enough to try this and for the writers they had permission to do it for. And they didn't particularly had a strategy of digipublishing the first book in a series. This is a way to acquaint yourself (introduce) to a new writer!

Dernok, yes! Well, maybe not a real book reader but I read books on my PDA and while it isn't a good substitute for a real book by a long shot it is good enough for me in certain circumstances, like trying our a free book or on holiday and it is fabulous for taking books you love with you anywhere. This way I alsways carry dozens of Anne books with me every day! And I can even scribble, make notes, put in highlights without having to think about what I do to the book

By the way, it was Pam who introduced me to the Baen Free Library years ago, and I still thank her for it. Do visit that place and be amazed at the athor names you will see there And if you're interested do read custodian Eric Flint's story on why... I am gratified it seems that Random House, not the meanest publisher, is more or less admitting James Baen was right by using his ideas and policies.

Oooh! You're welcome

I'm a big fan of being able to try out new authors and series for free (and it's not just because I've heard Cory Doctorow talk on this subject )

Tor.Com has free short stories. And while not posted on their official site, some of their authors offer free versions of their books on their own websites (like Cory. How often do you get to read a book nominated for the Best Novel Nebula for free like Little Brother?)

I know. I'lll get over it soon.

BTW, gang, fingers crossed and wish me inspiration, Tor is now asking me for a plot outline for THREE books! THIS WEEK! helphelphelp... but dead exciting! Don't expect to see much of me for a few days...

If I'm not mistaken John Scalzi posted his first novel online for free. Now he's on his 8th or 9th book, and doing well.
If you don't know John Scalzi, go out and get a copy of "Old Man's War" today. Get the paperback because the first edition is pretty scarce and will cost you a pretty penny.

Sorry, mike, it's gonna be a while before I read anybody else's books! Thanks for the recommendation, but I need to get my head down.

Gosh it's salty in here...

And P'ter - you are not the first to request a prequel. Perhaps later, or perhaps little snippets in my new website, but not for a little while.

Though our Rella was quite a gal in her day, one way and another.

Lanen...you really have to be kidding...Lord Liz, you already have the worth of a full print run from the publishers, just with all of your fans from the last three books. Were all out here eagerly waiting, for you to put the finishing touches on them so that we can all go buy them, enjoy them and read them over and over again.

Elizabeth...you have a fantastic talent, much like Anne McCaffrey's, in being able to bring your chracters to life...and to have them take us, your readers along with them on their incredible adventures.

When I have finally bought the next book and have it in my very anxious hands I will find a comfortable place to sit, with a lovely cup of tea and a full box of kleenex tissues, just in case you've got another one or two of those incredible *spots* in it for us to read, that you are so famous for. I almost ruined my first edition of *Redeeming the Lost*on one of those incredible *Spots* when I didn't have a tissue near at hand, for all the tears.

Good Luck with the outlines...but don't worry if your fans are going to want to read it...thats allready a given.

Bless you Master Maelin and Becky, what lovely tributes! I don't think you'll need those hankies for the first book, Maelin, but I'm making no promises about later. It always cheers me to know that Lanen and Co. have made new friends.

I just hope my editor likes the direction I'm going with this proposal. It's rather - edgy for me, so an unknown quantity. And I need to be in bed but am too wired! Arggh...

Fingers and toes crossed (it's darn hard to type like this...)

Wrong, P'ter, if your're wired you got to find yourself a wireless, nowadays better known as something ancient called a radio (for the young ones: that's kind of an MP3 player you don't program yourself...)

Actually, I have been known to turn on BBC Radio 4 - all spoken - at *very* low volume to help me sleep. I can't hear the words, it's just the voices that seem to calm me. Probably very odd.

Nah, P'ter, if I started singing, the cats would get up and leave, I might wake Steven, and I'd be so worried about correct breathing and resonance that I'd NEVER get to sleep! Actually, when I was in my teens, I used to be asked to sing one of my pals to sleep when we were visiting. I always felt it was a great honour, when I wasn't worried about it being the only way she could get me to shut up long enough to allow her to get to sleep...

Del Rey approached us earlier this month about their program for offering free ebooks--the first in each series. Their idea was to offer POWERS THAT BE, on which we are still earning royalties. I didn't much care for the idea of giving that up, the economy being what it is. Also, the book has been out for over 15 years (if my math is right) so it's been available to those interested for a long time--including in the new edition Del Rey put out with the publication of the TWINS series. I proposed that instead they put out CHANGELINGS as the free book leading to the rest of a series because fewer people seem to have tried reading that series--and also it's not earning back yet so the freebie could stimulate sales, as the program intends.

mikew, you are right that Old Man's War was free on the internet, but what makes Scalzi's story interesting is that it was released on his website first, then picked up by Tor. He posted it in 2002 then it came out in hardcover in 2005. But, he's an exception to the rule of people posting novels on the internet and hoping someone important will find it, because he's been a writer for years, just not novels.

Lanen, yay for Tor wanting more books! I'll just stand over here as part of the masses eagerly awaiting their release

eann, glad you're willing to give the freebie thing a try. I hope it brings in tons of sales

Gang, you do get that new member eann is Elizabeth Anne Scarborough, yes? Note the use of 'we' regarding PTB. Are you also noticing that it's the two professional writers (I flatter myself being in the same sentence with her) who are objecting to giving away their work? I know, I've heard all the spiffy sales talks, but forgive me if I can't join in the jubilation. It's easy for the publishers, they just take a bit of a loss. It's OUR money they're happily giving up. Grrrrr....

Thanks, Kevia, Lanen recommended it and pointed me at a couple of threads where I could put in a word or two. I sort of thought with the eann most people would get that it was me. When McAnnie and I started collaborating, Spider Robinson said he thought of us as AnnE and Eann.

I used to do that too. The Shipping Forecast is particularly good. Even when I had trouble sleeping R4 could calm me down.
I also used to use Radio 4 to help me wake up too!
It does lead to some weird dreams if you drop off again though

Rather than novels (though can I get your stuff as non-free e-books?), perhaps if the free stuff were things (such as a short short story) that weren't conventionally publishable the publishers could increase interest in a series without affecting sales too much.
I know that reading shorts in the Legends anthologies made me look for more work by some of the authors.

Looks like the publishers can't and won't do anything without the authors giving permission and that is as it should be. I know it'll be hard on authors. It'll seem like you are just waving away your right to the money and some useful income but did you read what I pointed to at the Baen website?

While the publishers are deciding about your income, true it is us, the readers who will have to shell out the money for the wonderful books you great authors write And as a reader I can assure you that what I have read from the Baen Free library did indeed generate more income for the authors (I'm just sorry I can't vouch for my thousands of fellow readers). I have bought more books from the authors and from the series I have downloaded a free book from, honest. And I have also bought books that I downloaded, like Eric Flint says, although I must admit I just/also wanted to own the actual book more than I was loyal or generous to the author. Let me assure you that had Song in the Silence been a free download I would still have bought the others AND the book itself in both hardcover and paperback
And that is truely not because you are one of my favourite authors. I've done the same with books by many others I like, e.g. the free download of a book by Mercedes Lackey in her Bard's Tales series did not prevent me buying not only that particular paperback as a real book but also all the other books in that (sub)series...

Again, authors should -- of course -- be the ones who decide IF and WHAT will go up for free. But sometimes you have to throw sprat to catch a mackerel my dears, and Eann, maybe especially in an economical situation we now have although I feel myself agreeing with your alternate proposal and the idea behind it We need to keep the people/readers spending their money on books

What is costing you much, much more income my dears is things like wonderful eBay! ommerce in second hand books has never been as huge as it is now. And it is a crying shame that all those sales don't earn you, the author, anything. Like with the public airing of music I wouldn't be at all against a fee of a few cents for the author when a book by that author was sold for money (I'm not even touching the subject of lending books...). But alas the logistics of such a thing are virtually impossible I'm afraid

However, with online publishing and printing on demand as it is now and the way it wil develop in the future I'm sure more authors will cut out publishing houses in the future. because of the beast called internet authors will have the means to advertise themselves and their work much more without the need for a (worldwide) publisher/agent. It'll take years but it might well be that the big publishing houses are having nightmare versions of my dreams...

I would like to see writers paid like footballers - paid a salary for writing and a huge transfer fee every time they move to a different publisher.

I'd like to see footballers paid like writers - they only get paid if they score a goal!
