Thumbs up Eight portrait in Pern Museum series: Sorka Hanrahan

'I am already clean, you polka-dotted idiot'

Regular visitors of this board and forum won't be too surprised that the next installment in the portrait series for the Pern Museum & Archives by Pern artist Linda Eicher (our very own Master Maelin) is Sorka Hanrahan, a member of the original first eighteen dragonriders and first Weyrwoman of Fort Weyr, and Pern for that matter. Not surprised because some aspects of this portrait were discussed on the bulletin board. Despite that we bet most viewers will be surprised at the scene Linda picked for this portrait: the famous "bathing scene" at Landing with two ten day old dragons and their fast learning riders. This delightful scene, with the silliplas pool and the houses at Landing and the mountain range in the background, catches an endearing moment in the lives of the first Weyrleaders of Pern. A moment in the lives of two extraordinairy people who led the Dragonriders of Pern to victory in many battles with Pern's enemy: Thread. A pair that was instrumental in laying the basis for many generations of heroes who rode their dragons in defense of the People of Pern!

Click on the miniportrait below to go to the Pern Museum & Archives and go see the full scene!

Sorka Hanrahan

Wow! For once I have no issues whatsoever with the character - you really captured her perfectly for me! (Although with that dreamy look on her face she could double as Anne of Green Gables...)

Love the scene - I love the way you put so much into the background of all your pictures! And I really like that the buildings aren't just gray, more of an earthy tone - looks almost like adobe. I imagine a warmer color like that would be more psychologically comfortable to live in. But you also got the prefab look down pretty well. (A lot of the subdivisions around here look like that actually, only bigger and uglier.)

Beautifully done I love the baby dragons, they're so cute and trusting and they seem to glow with love for their future riders! Who's that flying over the mountains and where are they going?

Oh Maelin, well done! I hadn't tried picturing Sorka before -- not the specific details of her face -- but you got her dead on right to my mind! All the background details are wonderful too, but it's her face that arrests me in the portrait.

Her face looks so naggingly familiar--did you have a particular model for the shape of the face?

The face is definitely the best part of this portrait and I really think is the best one yet! Something about the eyes makes her look so real.

I think the nagging familiarity is that the shape of her face (especially the chin) makes you think of Lessa. At least it made me think of her. And that in itself makes the work all the more brilliant, in my opinion.

Edited to add: Oh. and Master Maelin, I don't think I contributed much but I appreciate your appreciation. But all the credit belongs entirely to you (except for the share that goes to Anne for inspiring us all)!

And you know, that similarity would be appropriate with Lessa being Ruathan! Very nice touch, Maelin.

oooOOOOOooo, so some of you HAVE notice my little genetic manipulations. I thought I it would be interesting to enhance Sorka's looks, so that her face and chin would seem to be a family trait...one that would catch up with Lessa many, many generations down the road. So yes I did do try to make a resemblance between the two generations.

Anareth...thank you for your compliments...the model that I used for Sorka, was an actress name Olivia Williams...she was the female leed in the movie *The Postman* with Kevin Kostner a few years back. Although I try not to just copy the model I use, as I don't want the character to look so much like the *Hollywood star* as the character that Anne describes.

Sandi, I put you on my *Thank you list* like I did all the people that tried to help me with their suggestions, in answering my questions that I put in the thread, pertaining to this Portrait. Its all that help that made it so much easier for me to create this scene. I never know what will stir this *mud pond of a brain*of mine, into coming up with something that will add to my drawings. Like when Hans mentioned solar panels...lord I hadn't thought of that...but it sure makes a nice addition of interest to the houses. Or the discussion of what the houses looked like...I had a decent idea before the thread, but after that discussion, I was able to see the house clearly...and I was able to draw it easily.

Treaa...thank you, I thought so as well.

total GLAM!!

Wonderful work, Maelin. Glad for any assistance I might have been! She seems about to speak to you.

This is slightly cross topic here, but with the previous comments as a lead up I don't know where else to fit it and make as much sense.
As soon as I saw the comments about the family resemblance I looked up Lessa's portrait in the encyclopedia. There are three, by robin wood, all of which I love. and I love that it shows a progression of her features. But the very first thing that hit me about the lessa portraits was the first one, with the red background. It looks very Angelina Jolie. This I mention( and here is the cross topic issue) because i just finished perusing the posts on the possible movie. There is also a thread on your dream cast. In my initial thought on the subject, I couldn't see Jolie as Lessa. I think that is based on the types of movies she usually does though. The portrait has really made me stop and think about it again. Does anyone else see what I am talking about?

P.S.I do think perhaps you should repost this question into the Pern Movie thread... because that is more where you will get a good answer...and it will add to that threads topic better.

Very nice, beautiful!! You always do such good work. I have not seen anything that you have done that I did not like. Awesome, again.
