As most of you know I collect Anne Mccaffrey books... alright and some other stuff too. But mainly Pern! But Pern in every language and cover edition
![]() And just when you think you (almost) have them all some smart publisher, who reprinted and repblished the Harper Hall trilogy with new covers by Greg Call only a few years ago (under their Aladdin imprint) has pulled the same trick! We're talking about Simon & Schuster of New York who has brought to the world yet another new set of three Harper Hall volumes with... yes! New Covers. This time under the Simon Pulse imprint for teens. The new books are trade paperbacks (as was the Aladdin set; although they're only an inch bigger than the mass market paperbacks) and the new covers are by Sammy Juen Jr. They were published only a few days ago. I guess there will be some discussion here about these new covers ![]() Dragonsong ![]() Simon Pulse, June 2008 Trade Paperback (Reissue), 224 pages ISBN-10: 1-4169-6488-6 ISBN-13: 978-1-4169-6488-9 Ages: 12 and up Grades: 7 and up Dragonsinger ![]() Simon Pulse, June 2008 Trade Paperback (Reissue), 320 pages ISBN-10: 1-4169-6490-8 ISBN-13: 978-1-4169-6490-2 Ages: 12 and up Grades: 7 and up and Dragondrums ![]() Simon Pulse, June 2008 Trade Paperback (Reissue), 256 pages ISBN-10: 1-4169-6491-6 ISBN-13: 978-1-4169-6491-9 Ages: 12 and up Grades: 7 and up and a bigger pic of the back of Dragondrums, revealing some more details ![]() Sigh... now I have yet another set to buy... but done gladly while there's still "only" $8.99 a piece ![]()

Interesting look to them, I can tell they are meant to appeal to teens! It'd be interesting to hear if they sell better or worse than the last cover set.
A note of import, the last set of covers from Aladdin were available both as mmp and trades.

Except that they're only 4 limbed!
Though I like the simplicity.

I really really like those covers. I rarely buy double copies of a book, in fact I think I've only done it once, but I might have to reconsider with these! I can't even explain why I like them so much, I guess the teen marketing is working.

Those covers are rather nice. As Cheryl says, meant to appeal to teens. I've noticed this sort of artwork on a few other newer books on my infrequent visits to Waterstones...and at least they have dragons on the front. -Chuckles- The artwork itself isn't really a patch on Whelan (-Much luff for that man-), or Edwards, but if they're going to appeal to more people like that...I say good call.

Well I must be the odd one out here...I don't care for those covers at all. The simplistic drawings just don't appeal to me. I remember the drawing on my first Dragonflight paperback, that caught my eye...and got me interested enough to buy it. That buy started me on my long journey of reading Anne's many books. This cover wouldn't have caught my eye at all.

You're not alone, Maelin, I agree with you. They're colourful and I like the backgrounds more than the lizards

Hans...I do agree with you that the backgrounds are colorful and interesting looking...but IMO the dragons look like they came out of a childrens cartoon.

The covers are certainly catchy for young people interested in fantasy, but I find them slightly misleading 'cause I would expect some sort of magic in the books when seeing the electric flashy "lights" on the cover.
And yes, the dragons do look weird with only two small legs and wings for arms. But nontheless ( ![]() |

I've been reading the posts on this thread and keep looking at the cover art. And I too must say that they don't do much for me. I'd not take a second look at the books. Not like Whelan's art for The White Dragon. That's what pulled me to the book and got me reading Anne! But if they get more readers then I'm all for them!

Colorful covers, and I'm going to assume the artist only went for cartoonish to appeal to kids. Really the blue fire-lizard looks almost more decorative than something you expect to fly.

Now I will agree with this too...anything that gets more people/kids to read is only a good thing...especially for Pern and the rest of AMC's stories. ![]() ![]() ![]()

*shrug* They're bright, shiney, eyecatching. I like them. They may not be Pernese, but then, neither are most of the other covers. Many of the dragons on the other covers are down right ugly. In anycase, one should bright enough to look INSIDE the book to the story.

Visiting a bookstore today, I found that the older Alladin covers are shelved in the adult SF section, while these new ones were in the youth SF section.

Silly that because according to Simon & schuster the previous edition was aimed at young adult, too...

The individual stores may decide on their own where to shelve the books... *shrug*

I don't like the artwork on these very much, but I must say that's one of the more faithful descriptions of the story!
