Default Some of my latest acquisitions

I would have sworn I had already posted a thread with my latest acquisitions and especially the goodies I got at Eurocon but since I can't find it anywhere I guess my faulty memory is playing tricks again.

Now's as good a time as any since it is already quite some time ago I did a thread like this.

There was a special book published at Eurocon titles "Fatastiske Virkeligheder" (Fantastic Realities) and in it two of Anne's short stories are published in Danish for the first time: Runner of Pern and The Mandalay Cure. Both stories are translated by the lady who also did the Guest of Honour interview with Anne, Lea Thume. Editor for this anthology was Eurocon program director Knud Larn. I have tried to find this on the internet, to see if it is for sale still, but have been unable to find it. It's a paperback and because of its size you may say it is a trade paperback.

At Eurocon / in Denmark I was - of course - on the lookout for the Danish Pern books that I knew were published: Dragonflight and the Harper Hall trilogy. The last is published as three seperate volumes and as an omnibus.
Well, I did find the Dragonflight paperback on the first day, in the Eurocon booth! As an unread second hand for a reasonable price. Yay, yet another language added to my collection! That means I now have Anne Mccaffrey books in 11 languages

And while I saw several (Danish) people getting their Danish Dragonsinger of Dragonsong copies signed when I assisted when Anne did her signing session (I was selling her biographies by Robin Roberts, some of which got signed immediately ) I never saw the seperate books for sale at the con. However, on the second day, shortly before Anne was signing a stack of the hardcover omnibus editions magically appeared and I snatched one before they were all gone.

No new cover art as you can see but for me, as all languages collector, still very special.

At the con I did buy one other little paperback which was offered by one of the Danish booksellers in the dealer room: a very nice 1977 Corgi reprint (3rd printing) of Decision at Doona, the last printing to have the cover artwork by Ian West.

I came away with a lot more books from Eurocon, but those were ones I did not buy (there)

What I did buy recently...

The Baen Books title "New Destinies" (volume VIII), published September 1989, It holds the Anne short story "If Madam Likes You"

I recently not only got a chance to buy a Swedish Dragonquest (Drakjakten), on the right here

I was also able to replace my paperback copy of Drakryttarna (Dragonflight; on the left in the picture above) for a signed one (Anne's own file copy)

I bought more of Anne's file copies, but more about those in a later thread.

Another much coveted Pern book was one of the original, older Spanish edition. I did manage to obtain signed hardcover copies of Renegades and All the Weyrs but recently I finally got a chance to buy one of the originals first trade paperback editions. It is Dragonquest, published in 1977 by Acervo. It shows some age (discolouration), as you can see, but that can't be helped for a 30 year old paperback.

Another book I had my eye on and would buy if the price was right is "Year of the Lucy", the original 1986 hardcover by TOR with the nice artwork of Tom Galasinski on the front. Well, I recently got my chance/wish.

That's it for now, there's loads more but that'll have to wait for another thread

Wow! I didn't realise you had found all those treasures at EuroCON. You certainly have a knack for finding unusual and collectable books. Thanks for showing all these Hans.

I love the cover on *Fantastiske Virkeligheder*...I bought it just for that cover, and later I happily found out from you while we were having *danish* that two treasures of Anne's lurked inside. I have added it to my collection of Ship books. I would have gladly bought a print of the cover to hang up...if they would have had one for sale.

I love the art work on the covers of Drakryttarna, and Drakjakten....the little green it lovely...as is the fighting Queens.

You did very well indeed at Eurocon...and with the Nebo gift exchange

P.S. Thank you, the *New Destinies* will give my *book hound* something to go and find for me... this weekend

Hans (and others),

I have friends in both Denmark and Sweden who may be able to assist you in getting hold of material by and about Anne from their countries. Let me know, and I'll ask them if they'd be interesting in helping and -- here's hoping -- making new friends!

Ghyle, I can use any help offered in acquiring the elusive Swedish hardcover edition of Drakryttarna. It needs to be in good condition (the dustjacket being there is a must) and affordable.

It's this edition: http://forums.srellim.org/showthread...t=drakryttarna

I just can't help but think that riding a dragon (or anything, for that matter) nude has got to be uncomfortable!

And that dragon looks like such a caricature!

Yes, not a good outfit for flying at altitude or enduring the cold of between. It looks like she is so cold she set her head on fire to keep warm.

That picture (and Steven's comment) made me laugh out loud and, having had one of those days, I really needed that laugh. I sort of feel sorry for those who bought that book expecting something, er, somewhat different from what it really was.

LOL, Sandi! I agree! Talk about misleading covers! At least with Whelan's covers you get an idea about what is contained inside.

Sandi....same here when I read what Steven wrote...it's good to have a good belly laugh at the end of a very long day.

I can only imagine what some people might think the story was about, after looking at *Nude Dragon ridding*a new sport

Thank you Steven...for bringing hardy chuckles, to two ladies who seem to need them.
