Default Collecting Highlight (52) - short story "Apple"

You may best know the short story "Apple" from the Talent anthology - To Ride Pegasus. It is the third story of the Parapsychic Center series.

"Apple" first appeared in Crime Prevention in the 30th Century with Hans Stefan Santesson as editor. It was published in hardcover by Walker & Co in 1969. Issue price was $5.95. Copies can be found on ABEBooks for $10 - $22 US.

(It's the book on the left)

(again, the page on the left is it's copyright page)

It was next published by Avon in 1972 in the paperback book Young Demons, edited by Roger Elwood and Vic Ghidalia. Price was $.75. (sorry, no photo of that)
Then in 1973 it was published in To Ride Pegasus.

The fourth publishing of the story was in Science Fiction Monthly, New English Library in London, Volume 1 #6 in 1974. This is an oversized magazine, more like a newspaper. "Apple" is illustrated by Ian Pollock with one in color and two in black and white.

Rather unusual illustrations and this magazine was my reason for doing this highlight, but thought I'd better include the prior publications too.

There is also an article on artist Eddie Jones who did the cover art for Shpere Books 1974 paperback edition of Dragonquest included in this volume of Science Fiction Monthly.

A copy of this magazine recently sold on eBay for around $12.00 US. It was sold by a seller in Dorset, UK so a difficult find for those of us in the US.

The story was then published in 1977 in Get Off the Unicorn and again in the Science Fiction Book club publication of The Wings of Pegasus in 1991.

Becky, This is a very interesting "Highlight" and I really enjoyed getting to see the inside illustrations. I have never seen that particular cover on "Alchemy and Academe"...thank you for once again sharing some of your tresured collection.

Sorry about including the Alchemy and Academe hardcover, but when I photographed my books I was doing two at a time, so you'll probably see more of this in the future.

I think the illustrations look like the dried apple 'dolls' that were popular back in the 80's. (the heads were made of whole dried apples) It seems to me that maybe the artist had seen them and the title of the story is "Apple" and he just put them together.

Hmmm, in that case I may crop the photos Becky, so that people don't get confused!

Tis indeed an odd set of illustrations, thanks for sharing them all!

Interesting progression. I've never seen anything like this for Anne's stories before.

I thought about that after I'd posted the thread. I'll remember that in the future.
