I've just been reading this and I'm confused!
Its set in the Doona universe, but there are Brains and Brawns, but the brain doesn't seem to be like the Brainship Brains.... arrrgh!!! Its a good story but I'm now confused!

The answer is it's not really in Doona or Brain/Brawn -- Anne just borrowed elements from those worlds for this story.
The reason to me that it's very clearly not in Doona, is the peaceful approach to other species is gone -- there's no feeling in this story that conflict/wars with aliens are to be avoided at all costs, as there is in Doona. Call in an alternate universe.

I thought that it was the Doona universe a long time on. There are obviously lots of different species, though only humans, Doonans and Khalians are mentioned, and by the last Doona book (which I haven't read) they've only just found another species. Hints are given that the war was forced upon them in the Mandalay Cure. The brains though, they sort of didn't fit in. Unless it was just a nickname for a pilot.

I haven't read it in a while, but I got the impression it was meant to be a brainship.
That set of three stories [Duty Calls, A Sleeping Humpty Dumpty Beaty, The Mandalay Cure] were all written for a set of anthologies called The Fleet (also the title of the first of the 6 books), which were written by many different authors in a shared world.

I don't know that any of the others authors brought in their other works as Anne did. I've got some of the books, but haven't read them....
