Default Regarding the Other Language Section

I'm not sure but I think this is the right place to post this.

I was curious so I read the posts in the Welkom thread. I felt I could almost understand some of it. I wondered if some of the peeps would be interested in a sort of informal language lesson thread. Maybe some of those who are fortunate to have command of other languages would like to teach the rest of us some useful phrases, such as "Where is the nearest Bookstore?"

Personally, I'm always looking to learn new things.

Sounds good to me, but it'll be up to those that know other languages....

I'm game too, Sandi. Had you any language(s) in particular in mind?

In the "Dutch" forum, which actually now is Dutch & Afrikaans forum we (you!?) could start a Language Thread and exchange sentences, expressions, meaning etc. in three languages, English, Dutch and Afrikaans. That way I would maybe get to learn some Afrikaans (even though I have no trouble whatsoever to read and understand it, and Att and Ruwin have no problem to read and understand my Dutch).

So, go ahead and by all means launch the thread! And if you might want to be involved in any of the other languages, I'll open up those fora for you if you wish

Sounds like fun, Hans

More years ago than I will mention I learned a little French and a spattering of Korean but I don't remember either enough to claim them

The main problem is that I am going to be moving Saturday (I think) and I'm not sure about internet access. I will start a thread but don't get offended if I disappear for a few days, ok? Hopefully others will jump in on it too and I'll be back on line as soon as I can.

OK. You gonna start a thread in the only open forum as yet? Or do you want one of the others available?

We understand about the move and won't be offended, but it's a good idea to repeat that statement in the thread

I started a thread in the one that's in use. Seems the most practical to me. It's just a "how to say howdy" so far. Hopefully others will join in too. Maybe I should put an invitation thread in the main forum?

I'll join in!
I used to speak french and a little welsh, but Dutch sounds fun! I've spent the last few weeks muttering I really need to get Hans to tell me how to say "Do you want cakes or hot drinks?"
dutch tourists are very nice though!

I'm thinking of learning Russian... I got as far as the 1st page of the book!

I can't see any button to start a thread in the German language forum?

I haven't opened that forum yet, Nefer. If I did, would you start posting in German? Are you in a position to tell German speaking (internet) friends that the forum is there?

I actually was still working on a list of German AMC publications, like I posted for the Dutch/South-African forum.

I'd be happy to open the German forum though

Hi Hans,
Well, I'm not a native German speaker, but I thought there should be something there for when someone speaking German wanted to stop by. And it would help me practise my German if there were someone here to write with.
I'll definitely spread the word about this place if I find some German speaking Anne McCaffrey fans, but so far I haven't met any and I have been living here a year now.

There could also be a section for Scandinavian languages (Danish, Swedish and Norwegian) seeing as there is a couple of those on the NKT and probably also here. And Danes, Swedes and Norwegians understand eachother, even though we stick to writing in our own language.
I bet you would understand some of it too, as I understood a lot of you guys were writing in the Dutch section .

Thanks for the suggestion about the Scandinavian forum; we'll look into that later. As for the German forum I'll also see if I can speed up things.

Anything happening with opening up for posting in the German section?
And how's it going with the idea about having a Scandinavian section?

Scandinavian... not sure, might take some time. Let's see and wait.

German. I'm really sorry. Just haven't got any time (working fulltime at the moment). This week, my son's birthday. End of next week is McCaffreyQuest... so might take another few weeks

Edit: hang on, I can open the forum without having the German booklist ready I'll open it and let's see what happens Can't guarantee much activity though...
