Default book discussion-final-hopefully poll

ok...
soz for all this beuracracy and democracy but I want to get this right.
so far 2 ideas seem the most popular...
cronologically from dragonsdawn with 11 votes
publication order with 6 votes.
both have advantages and disadvantages.
chronological-shows how Pern develops, gives a coherant storyline
but... - books overlap and if we do them, DK and DB are new and DB isnt published in th UK, and as I reckon DBs the 5th book, so we'd reach it pretty soon, not so bad if we work in months though it wont be available in pb, but more so if it turns out to be weeks or fortnightly.

publication order-no overlaps and you get an idea how Pern, anne-wise develops and how her writing develops.
but... - might not give as coherant a storyline.

Also I want to know whether we want just Anne or Tod as well-interesting for comparisons.

I propose that we have a test discussion with the first book we do so that we can find out whether weekly, fortnightly or monthly-no longer or it'll begin to get stoopidly protracted... the book we start on is up to the poll as is whether we use Tods work as well!

The test shall begin on March the 1st

oh and could one of the mods PLEASE ok this I don't want to run this then get told off!

oh and do peeps mind me doing this or would they prefer someone else. please state!

OK, voted. As for who runs it, I have no particular preference... what's there to run?

And if we go for chronological you don't even have to chose a book, as the next one would be obvious. Hmm, same goes for chronological Anyway, a list could be made for the whole year 2005 in advance. My preference is for monthly because some of us have busy jobs and less free/sare time than younger peeps might have.

So, Edith, maybe explain a little more about what you think should be "run"?

Whatever happens, let's try and make March the month we start the first book discussion: Dragonflight and the short stories Weyr Search and Dragonrider part I and II (which stories are incorporated in the book but were published earlier).

Ok I voted. As to what order it doesn't really matter all that much to me. If pushed I'd say chronological but I don't really care. I did vote to include Todd's books because they do include angles and segments of story lines that I think people find interesting and that always makes for a good discussion!

I voted for chronological order with Todd's books. I just prefer doing things that way.

And what we could do to push back Dragonsblood is to take the short stories one at a time: "Survey", Dragonsdawn, "Dolphin's Bell", "Ford of Red Hanrahan", "The Second Weyr", "Rescue Run", Dragonseye/Red Star Rising, "Ever the Twain", Dragon's Kin, Dragonsblood, and so on.

And what we could do with the stories that overlap is to give priority to the one that begins earlier. For example, Dragonquest seems to start earlier, if just a tad bit, than Dragonsong, so we'd do the former first, the latter second.

Just my thought.

I also agree with Hans that we should do a story per month with many of us having busy schedules.

And I too don't care who runs it.

Publication order please, by all means include Todd's book. I don't really care who runs the discussion, I'll probably participate no matter what.

A month per book sounds good. Please post the discussion schedule in advance, that way we can read the book and comment.

I'd just like to say that I chose Edith to lead us, or, rather, moderate the discussion, because she has demonstrated both an enthusiasm, and is, I feel, capable of handling it. If she has responsibilities, then another can take over, but until then I'm firmly behind her.

I'm just looking forward to the whole experience!!!

Post Re: book discussion-final-hopefully poll

This sounds like a great idea Edith, and as you're the one with the enthusiasm to get it going, you clearly should be the discussion leader. I would like to hear more about how you envision this working, what your role as leader entails, etc.

I concur with those that say one book a month; most of us are busy people and even if we get through discussing a book in only a week, I'm sure folks could use a break before diving in to the next one.

As for order, I have a new suggestion ... Do the books chronologically within each Pass, but retain the freedom to change the order we read the different Passes. For example we might start with the first pass books, then skip to ninth, then to sixth, or whatever. That way we could put off Todd's books a while, to give folks a chance to get a hold of them. Just another idea to add to the mix.

At this point I think we are probably tight on time for starting something on March 1st, as the book is not definitely selected and everyone will need a chance to read/reread it before we start so the book is fresh in their minds. Also, I'd like to do some advertising around the 'net to see if we can't use this to draw more folks here. Could we set the begin date for March 15 or thereabouts, if that works for you Edith?

I voted publication order, i like getting the feel of how Anne was going with the books as they were published. And i voted a yes on including Todd's books. I havent had opportunity to read his as yet, but look avidly forward to all you guys have to say as this is discussed. and i'm perfectly ok with Edith leading, seems logical to me

March 15ths ok with me Cheryl. Though I'll have to write the post on Monday evening GMT (stupid lectures getting in the way of my PC time!)

what I had envisioned was once a month doing a post saying

This month we're discussing (insert book) from (date) to (date).
the next book will be (Insert book) starting (Date) till (date).

If there was something more specific to discuss, such as Lessa's telepathy or Kitti Ping's work I could highlight it and also post any specific useful websites-ie sky watch and Tsunami sites for SOP.

Hmm, I also (recently) understood a book discussion leader started topics and gave the discussion the virtual kiss-of-life when discussion dies down by pouring some virtual discussion oil on the debate embers?

If you can do that (I suppose the essence is to monitor the discussion thread closely)....

But the moment we hear that your study results suffer because of MoM, you're fired! Just kidding.

So, when do we close the poll?

i don't really mind between chronological order or publication - and i liek the idea of chronological within Passes. To me, it depends how you want to analyse the books, through historical analysis (Pern and Pern's history) or how Anne developed the world and how her vision clarified throughout the series. If we go for straight chronological order, then i think that we should leave out Todd's books until the end, but in publication order then it would not be a problem.

In the analysis of the books, I feel that the primary emphasis should be upon the book at hand, with the ability to refer to any other book in the sequence if needed to support a point, irrespective of the publication or chronological order if necessary. Thus the early version of Ruatha's liberation by the dragon-riders can profit from looking at the later one, from Robinton's angle, and discussion can profitably turn on the changes encompassed (and still remain relevant).

So the discussion for Dragonflight will be posted on the 15th.
there'll be a few questions to answer and some websites but if anyone's got any more feel free to post them.
so far I've sites for Phosphine, phosphate (you'll see why later) and Telepathy.
