Upgraded to Windows 10 last night. Took about an hour and a half to do which was annoying, but so far no issues.

I had more teeth pulled today, four this time I think. The pain this time is MUCH worse than the other two times put together. I am waiting until after Dragoncon to get the rest done. Then I have to come up with the money for dentures. I am getting one more big check, not as much as the last two big checks, but should be enough to get them. Affordable Dentures has a full set for 500 dollars. Which is just about what I'll be getting.

A couple of years ago the add a night at the aquarium. A night for Dragonconers only with costume contest. Kibby is looking for that more than almost anything else.

I am hoping to pick up some writing tips and just being away from all the B.S. here. I will have a bit more money this time that I had the other 2 times I went, so I am looking forward to picking up a few new dragons.

Wishing everyone who is having surgery that their surgeons will have a steady hand, wisdom to recognize what needs to be done, and a complete and speedy recovery.

My oldest return from his first visit with his dad in 10 years enlightened and willing to work towards his goals. Sadly, this happen because his dad showed his true colors. I say sadly because for my son who desired a relationship with his father it was a disappointment and an eye opener. For him I wished his dad would have matured and chosen to work on developing a relationship with his son instead of trying to convince his son why everything that happen was my fault. It was not to be. He's still a teenager with all that angst, but the anger is gone. He has a long road to go as he decides what type of relationship he wants with his dad, heals from the disappointment, and learns how to live in this world as a person with high functioning autism and also an extrovert.

Tuesday, my youngest goes to the orthopedic specialist about his spine. It is slightly curved.

Otherwise, I'm plodding forward one step at a time.

In the grocery store this morning, all the Thanksgiving paper plates, etc. were on the shelves. It's mid August! Maybe they want people to buy now, put it away for later, forget where they put it and have to buy more?! I can see Christmas wrapping paper early because some people mail gifts overseas but could we please have Halloween first?!

The local Trek club, which my mother, sister, niece, grand niece and Kibby all belong to, held their annual charity auction. The past couple of years they have made a little over two thousand dollar. This year they made four thousand one hundred dollars. Twice what they had been doing. Everyone very happy with them selves.

Kibby is not a happy Kibby. She ordered a Loki costume only to be told two weeks later it has been discontinued. That was a week ago and they still have not refunded her the money. So now she is looking for a Loki costume locally, because there is not enough time to order one, without having as much money to put into it. I hope she gets her refund before Dragoncon.

That is too bad about Kibby's costume, I hope she is able to find another and gets her money back before DragonCon!

That Trek club sounds like a lot of fun for them. I am not a club type person but I do really love Star Trek (mostly the original series).

I have about a half dozen good sized pumpkins on the vines that have grown from seeds I planted in the spring. They have taken over every bit of the flower beds. That is actually ok because there aren't any flowers there except tulips, that are long gone by now. I had no idea the vines would take over like they have. I have joked that some morning we will wake up and they will be covering the house, like the vines in Sleeping Beauty! I don't plan on cooking any of the pumpkins, I am hoping they will last to Halloween and the "kids" can have some for carving!

We don't do carving pumpkins so I know nothing about the technique. Some pumpkins have very hard skins, so I dare say you need to use ones with softer skins. How much of the inside do you take out? And do you cut a hole at the stem end big enough to scoop out some interior? What do you do with the flesh you take out?
Etc...................
etc...................

From past carving experiences you start by cutting around the top, usually a couple inches circle from the stem where the pumpkin had been attached to the vine. Carefully pull that off and you can now use a big (strong) spoon to scoop out all the insides. I have always just thrown away what we take out but I know some people bake and salt the pumpkin seeds (I think you would still have to "shell" them, though). I'm not sure about differences in toughness of skins, we've never had any trouble carving. I can only manage eyes a nose and a mouth but I have seen some very elaborate ones online including spooky mansions and scenes from A Nightmare Before Christmas. They make special tools for carving intricate scenes, I suppose real pumpkin "artists" use them?

I discovered a neat trick last year, instead of making a 'lid' by cutting a cricle out around the stalk, you cut the same size hole in the bottom, then once you have scooped and carved, you can put your candle on a plate or what ever and then just put the whole pumpkin over the top, makes lighting the candle an awful lot easier, it also means you don't have issues with the 'lid' drying out quicker because it is smaller and then shrinking and falling into the lantern.

This one is from a few years back, I did some I was quite chuffed with last year but I can find any pictures. As well as cutting right through the pumpkin you can shave the outer layer off so you get an illuminated panel.

Not my pumpkin, but you see what I mean!

It looks as if pumpkin carving is an art in itself. Well done Simon.
I don't know why we don't do it in NZ Perhaps I should start a trend? Pumpkins grow prolifically here too. But we don't do halloween

What a lot of people do is tape the pattern of the design they want onto the pumpkin then poke holes through the paper into the pumpkin. All you have to do is use a tiny knife connect the dots. That is what my sister does.

The best way to clean the pumpkin's guts is with you hands. When Kibby did her first pumpkin she HATED pulling the guts out. I have to find the pic.

You should definitely start a new trend, Lily. Depending on the time of year your pumpkins ripen you could carve other things and scenes into them, it doesn't have to just be Halloween! I think you should do it!

Cool looking pumpkins Simon.

Ginny, I, too, am glad your health mostly checked out too. May the doctors solve the final trouble spot.

I am cutting and pasting my update from NKT for those who are not on that board. Here it is:

This school year is off to an insane start. About a month ago, while upgrading the lights in our main school building where my class room is, a contractor accidentally released asbestos; thus, contaminating the building. The building was quarantined while cleaned under OSHA eyes. Good news, the building is now asbestos free. Bad news, our building was emptied with everything that was contaminated destroyed. We are in the process of putting our classrooms back together, while determining what we are missing. We then submit the list to DO for replacement or reimbursement. So far, I'm missing the complete dvd collection of the Magic School Bus, a 6 disc PBS and/ or BBC collection about the ocean, Food in Space dvd, along with a few dvds I can't remember the name. The dvds maybe somewhere in the school but was misplaced when they were trying to put the salvageable packed stuff back in the class rooms. Hopefully, otherwise they had to destroy them. Also, everything that was on my walls had to be destroyed along with my pocket chart and any little thing that was exposed.
The second thing to occur is my Instructional Aide (IA) had a stroke last week. She is home recovering. Please keep her in your thoughts for a full recovery. Of all the IAs I've worked with, she is one of the best.

On Monday, I will begin the school year in a new school with a group of 6th and 7th graders, I've never met before. Hopefully, I'll have my room up and ready for them. I've tomorrow and about 4 hours on Sat to get my room ready.

Oh dear, that's terrible news. I hope you can get all essentials replaced.

Here's wishing your IA a speedy and full recovery. Will you have a locum while she recuperates at home, or will you have to do without?

Thank you both.

District office says I will have a sub IA, but until I see them tomorrow morning, I'm not relying on the news. I was suppose to have a sub IA during summer school and the person never materialized.

My youngest niece got into a small STEM school. Only 16 kids in the class, they have a 3D printer and dance classes. Emmi is very excited. She should do much better at this school than last year.

The school said Seth can go next year. This year Seth is at the same school Emmi went to last year. But he is in a special class also only 16 kids. He has his own aid. He should do good there this year.

Those watermelons are wonderful!

Best of luck to your niece and nephew, it sounds like they are in good class situations!

It would be fun to see if I could start a trend for carving pumpkins. I think they are around most of the time - I would have to chose one with a soft enough skin to cut though, they are not all . I could find out details on the internet couldn't I . But the insides would not be wasted! Pumpkin soup anyone???

I tried washing the gunk off the seeds and roasting them but it didnt work. Should have looked up instructions for that too.

Maw - poor Kibby! Tell her, there's worse things you could have to stick your hand into!!!!!! And I loved those carved watermelons.

When it comes to carving watermelons; they're pretty enough, but how you supposed to eat them? Seems like a waste of a perfectly good watermelon.

As to carving pumpkins; Michaels has artificial pumpkins that are fun to carve. My wife found a Mickey Mouse pattern and used my Dremel tool to carve it. Made a bit of a dusty mess, but hey, it beat the heck out of the mess a real pumpkin would have been. Put a light kit in it and this year will be year 4 or 5 for it. Neither one of us like pumpkin pie or anything else pumpkin, so win/win situation.

The artificial ones come in a whole assortment of sizes and prices, and are actually designed to be carved. You can use one of those carving kits with the specialty knives if you like. Lily, if you wanted to use those, it might be something to sell at a craft fair.

We always put aluminum foil around the lid before putting it back on the pumpkin, so it doesn't dry out or roast.

Fun thing to do with your pumpkin afterward, if you're not planning to try and bake it, is to put it out in the yard, put some pumpkin seeds or birdseed inside, and watch the squirrels go in and out!

Well now, I puzzled over what you might mean by that comment, Allen, and even googled it. References to Michael Jackson (yuk) abounded, a nasty radio host and various other things.

Do birds like pumpkin, do you think?

Bird will eat the seeds. My goat LOVE pumpkin guts. Not sure what other animals do. I would think most plant eaters.

Firai, my scooter turned dragon, has been redesigned and looks much better. She now has bright pink eyes, a knitted pink top hat, better wings and a tail that looks like a dragon tail. She is all ready for Dragoncon.

Our old van needs a new inspection sticker by Monday. The problem is that to have the work done to get the new sticker it need a lot of work. The most expensive being an air bag repair. That alone will cost 600 dollars. The van has close to 300.000 miles, the back door won't open, has a scratched windshield as well as other stuff. The mechanic said the van is not worth the cost, so old van will be retired.

We are getting a new van, which we were SUPPOSE to pick up today. When we tried to load Mom's chair on the lift the lift went up just fine, but would not go back down. The car place is two hours away. We were not happy, but there really wasn't anything we could do either. It being Sat. no one was there that could fix it. The salesman loaned us a van so no one would need to take us up to get it. He says it WILL be ready on Monday. He knows we need it NOW. Kibby & I are leaving on Wed for Dragoncon and plan on taking new van. With the old van unable to be on the road after the first, we are cutting it very close.
