sorry, don't know if this has been asked but:

when a dragons rider dies they go between...

...so what happens to firelizards like Zair? do they go between or is the connection not strong enough and so do they go wild again?

I think it is established that fire lizards do not act the same as dragons and the fact that Zair did die together with Robinton is a special case becase he (Zair) was still suffering of having been drugged.

Whether they go wild again... I don't think so but there is no evidence to corroborate this. It just seems unlikely. Whether they will attach themselves to a human again is also unknown but more likely than going wild again.

Didn't Sorka's Duke in Dragonsblood go between when Sorka died? Even if they don't stay between they definitely go between.

Yes he did, he keed and when between right after Faranth keen and when between. For she know Sorka's wishes.

when zair died, was that the first time pern had a dead fire lizard or dragon corpse? surely a dragon could die instantly enough not to go between, like a direct thread hit?

thats an interesting question im not sure i dont think in the books it happened except when in dragonsblood the dragon and firelizard where flamed outside the college.

In Dragonflight, Nemorth is the last queen dragon; her rider has died, and she dies on the Hatching grounds after laying her last clutch, which includes Ramoth's egg.

I know in Dragondawn they find bodies of firelizards.
