Beat the cold? It is unseasonally warm in my country. Yesterday we even had a measurement of 13 C (55.4 F) in our area, a record that replaced an old record dating to 1999. I suppose we'll experience a late winter again, like last year, when winter didn't set in before end of February/March. And when it does I suppose that a minimum of snow and ice will create a maximum of chaos, especially on the roads, as we have seen the last few years. It seems like people can't handle winter anymore.

The temp. set records tonight here. It is suppose to get down to -45f in some of the plain states. I would for it to be in the 20s again.

Yikes! That's cold!

We had a fairly warm winter last year and this summer is as hot as ever and likely to hang around into autumn.

I agree that people cannot handle winter. When I was in school most mothers stayed home and there was almost always school. Today most mothers work, the young kids are in daycare (which almost never closes) but schools close even if there is the threat of snow. Very wimpy if you ask me! I remember slogging through well over a foot of snow to get to my bus stop.

It is currently 6 degrees F out. We've been down to -10. Last year was lots of snow, this one seems to be major cold. Here in New England we are used to weather extremes. Other parts of the country are not prepared for the cold they are getting.

At about 9 am I went out to get in the car to go to the grocery store. The doors were frozen shut. Time for another cup of coffee and try again later. It rained yesterday and then the temperature dropped to the basement last night. I'm glad I no longer work and can take my time when something like this (rarely) occurs.

You had busses? Wow! I had to walk to school until I was in 7th grade. If it rained I wore a raincoat. If it snowed or was cold, I bundled up.

Last night when I got off work at the prison, I had to do my usual quarter-mile (maybe more) walk to my car. When I fired it up, the dashboard thermometer read -7 F. I drove out of the parking lot, maybe 50 yards, and it read -10. A half-mile later, at the hiway, it read -14. 3/4 mile after that, at my dirt road turnoff, it read -16. A half mile after that, at my gate (downhill from the hiway) it was -20. By the time I got to the house, a quarter mile from the gate, almost all downhill, it was - 25.

I'm in the southern Missouri Ozarks, probably only about 100 air miles from Branson. IT'S NOT SUPPOSED TO GET THAT COLD HERE!!!

But the good news is that the heater on the water bed works so well that I actually had to turn it down to be comfortable and not kick off covers in the middle of the night.

We had busses for junior high and high school, which were about 5 miles away. I still had to walk about a half mile across a salt marsh meadow to get to the bus. Elementary school was about a mile and a half walk, starting at the salt marsh. We were definitely not pampered.

That is insanely cold where you are!

I love water beds. We had one when we were first married but now my husband needs a firm mattress so no more lovely water bed.

Our mattress is baffled, foam & fiber filled with a built-in lumbar support. Cost me over $200, about 10 years ago. It's easy to get it pretty firm with the volume of water I put in it.

Then there's the six-inch feather bed on top of it.

We love our bed.

Cats wouldn't leave me alone last night so I went up stairs. I have never loved my electric blanket more. Under the blankets I was toasty warm.

It is better then when we lived in the trailer. We only had kerosene heater. We did not leave it on all night so when we woke up we would have to wait for the room to get room warm. Now I just have to go down stairs.

When we lived in California we walked to school, about 15 min. When we moved here (Va)
we took the bus to school. The school was a 20min drive. What I could never understand was that everyone took the bus.

A girl who lived across the street from the school took a bus. Not an exaggeration. The bus stopped at the end of very driveway. Some only a few feet a part. I still do know understand why the kids could not get on from a central spot.

I think the reasoning behind school buses making a stop at every house is because a lot of streets don't have sidewalks and I am guessing the bus companies don't want the liability of telling people their kids have to walk even next door with the possibilty of the kids getting hurt. It didn't used to be this way. When I got the bus to junior and senior high school there were only two bus stops in that whole section of town. All the kids had to make it to either one of them.

I can understand small kids taking the bus, even across the street. We're talking middle and high school kids.

Madison, the 9 year old, could walk home from school. Between her house and the school is a church and one house. She will not walk home. She has watched to much Criminal Minds.

Around here, schools are closed because the windchills are actually in 'potentially life-threatening' levels, though today was better (the high real temp was 1 and the windchill was only -15. Monday it was -15 real temp, -37 winds plus about 16" of snow.) We actually had a blizzard warning plus travel restrictions (not advisories, actual "If you are pulled over you will get a $300 fine for being on the roads") and the warnings for windchill were "Exposure for several minutes can cause frostbite, hypothermia, and death."

I'm LOL at myself just got a Braillewriter and didn't know it came with the parts needed for making labels, I've only seen it in a catalog. And the one that my teacher has didn't have that part. I was like what in the world? Also that is what someone who is blind can make notes, it kind of looks like a typewriter with only six keys instead a full keyboard

It's the one that I think I linked to a few pages back (here's the link again in case I'm imagining it). We had not been able to view it at the time as the current owner was away over New Year.

They've apparently had a bit of interest lately, but everyone else is waiting for other things to work out - whereas we're the estate agent's dream in that we can essentially move in tomorrow assuming that they accept the offer and that the survey doesn't show up anything catastrophic.

Photos make the rooms look a bit bigger than they are, but they're all still a very decent size, and there's potential for further expansion (especially on the 1st floor where you could effectively build up another double bedroom above what's marked on the plans as the drawing room, with relatively little major work in the grand scheme of things).

There's really little not to like though...Plenty of space (in the right places for us as well - as we're a bit odd in that we really don't care about the size of the bedrooms - we're far more interested in having a lot of actual living space), it's really light, it's distinctive and seems generally to be in pretty good order. Couple of windows that could do with new seals on them, and we will probably want to consider a new boiler at some point as I believe the one in there is original (even assuming that the solar heating has given it a pretty easy life), but that's all things that we can use as cards in our hand when trying to get the price down a bit.

Okay, it looks like we've got it, pending final approval for the mortgage anyway. We've made an offer which has been accepted.

We have been given the runaround a bit by our bank, but having discussed things with the mortgage advisor at the estate agent selling the place they've advised that they don't see there being any problem.

Fingers crossed!

Good luck to you Zelandeth!

We've used our wood stove to keep warm this winter, which had sat idle for several years while our youngest was small. We could have just put a gate around it, but we also needed to get it inspected and just never had gotten around to it until this past fall. Now our problem is not having enough wood laid in ready to burn. We do have a good pile of aged logs that are awaiting splitting so they will fit in the stove (which has a small door). Time to rent an electric splitter, it seems.

It's funny how different things are bought when a winter storms threatens in different parts of the country (and around the world, presumably). Here in Maryland, people rush out to buy bread, milk, and toilet paper. As TP isn't something that spoils and thus can be stockpiled, I don't understand the rush to purchase it before a storm, but indeed have witnessed the empty shelves that show as proof that it's a pre-storm concern.

Cheryl, very interesting -- TP, maybe they have a nightmare of running out.

Recovering from my hand surgery and my mom's excitement over my sister's wedding seems to help her mentally deal with her cancer. Otherwise, preparing for going back to the classroom and my student who enjoys "hitting" others. Also, I've updated my goodreads account after 4 years of ignoring it so many of you may receive invites from me on facebook.

May everyone stay safe in this years winter storms.

Heh, Allen. We have a splitting maul and axe, but the pile is large and an electric splitter so much easier.

Moonlady - I'm glad your hand surgery went well and wish you a speedy recovery. Prayers for your mom.

The grandma of someone I knew in the area apparently bought more TP every time a storm threatened and tossed it in her basement. When she died and they cleaned her home, my friend estimated it to be about a four year supply for her own use.

I've watched some of those hoarding shows. TP is probably the least obnoxious thing to hoard, but even at that I would think 4 year's worth was a fire hazard!

I saw a "thing" in a catalog. It is a rectangular metal box with a lid that you push down on the contents. The idea is that you put newspapers in it, press down, and the papers compress into blocks you can burn in the fireplace. We do not use our fireplace that often and we do not own any burnable trees. Buying wood goes against the grain (so to speak) and those paper wrapped logs quite literally stink when they burn. I have ordered one of these contraptions and I'll let you all know what we think. It may well be that the only one in the house with enough arm strength to make it work is Mike. I don't think he'll be thrilled to be designated brick maker. We will see.

Best of luck, Moonlady with that student. I do not know you, but having worked in daycare and after school programs I can tell you I appreciate what you do.

If it's like the one I saw on TV, you wet the newspaper too, then let it dry out after the bricks are formed. Looked interesting. We just have no place for an indoor woodburner, outdoor furnaces are beyond our budgetary means, we don't generate enough paper waste to make the bricks, and we have plenty of wood. I could have spent the last 15 years cutting up deadfalls, tops from a little logging, and blowdowns and still have plenty of wood to cut up today.

Plus, at 66, I'm getting a bit too old to be cutting and splitting firewood and stoking a wood furnace.

The fireplace is not really for heating, more for comfort. We don't use the fireplace that often but I figure recycling the couple of local weekly newspapers plus the Sunday paper in the fireplace instead of the recycle bin might be interesting. Plus, our son has a fireplace in his apartment so we could supply him with a couple bricks occasionally.

I almost wish we had a wood stove. If we made it so the pipe went through up stairs, it would keep it warmer. As much as I wish it was warmer up there I HATED our wood stove.

4 years of TP, wow.

Thanks Priscilla and Cheryl.

The paper bricks contraption sounds interesting.
