Possibly not, but since I'm giving myself plenty of time I'm hoping to be the tortoise who wins the race instead of the wild and crazy hare!

I was thrilled to find a good home for the books!

Hans, Kibby's 4H group is going to have a speaker talk about Netherlands this week. I was wondering if there is any games from there that would be typcal and easy to learn you could sugest? They have about half an hour of rec. time at the end of the class to play inside or outside.

Mazel Tov Cilla on the weight loss. May you succeed!

I had nerve conduction tests today and found out that my carpel tunnel is moderate to severe. I'll be seeing a hand specialist for further treatments. My advice to anyone...never ignore if you think your hands are going numb even if its only for short periods and you think its because you haven't moved them in awhile. I did and years later my carpel tunnel is beyond braces and exercise.

@ Moonlady, been there, done that. I caught it early, but could not wear the braces at work or to sleep in. They did not do me any good.

It's snowing. Just flurries that are only sticking to the bushes and not on the ground. The big flakes look pretty drifting down.

Our next door neighbors have 4 children ages 8 to 16. They are in and out of the driveway all day long taking them places, picking them up, etc. I do not remember those days fondly, it was wonderful when ours got their licenses!

I thought Google was cute today. They come up with some funny stuff.

The neighbor's chickens are out on their daily bug hunt. He has six hens, no roosters. They're cute the way they follow each other around like a school of fish. I did have to fence around a couple bushes as they were digging close to the roots. He herds them around the yard with a long stick and usually has a long cigar stuck in his mouth.

Not much going on. Kibby is going to take her college entrance test this wen. It is a local 2 year community college. The test is more about what classes she might need to bring her up to college leavel.

I said I'm making chain maille jewelry a while back. Well, here's a pic of what I've made that I have for sale right at the moment. I also wire wrapped a 46+ carat bloodstone for my wife (March birthstone) and made a necklace with matching bracelet and earrings, for her birthday, but I don't have any pics of them yet.

Right to left:
Gold & silver plated, Byzantine weave, 8-inch bracelet.

"Permanently" colored wire, blue & red-orange, box chain weave, 8-inch bracelet. I made these rings myself, then made the bracelet from them.

Silver & gold plated, Byzantine weave, 8-inch bracelet.

Stainless steel necklace, 20 inches of box chain weave, 2 to 3 inches of Byzantine weave in center, Byzantine weave drop for the wire-wrapped agate stone (wire-wrapped stone from ebay).

Stainless steel, dragonback weave, 8-inch bracelet.

Yes, they're all for sale.

I haven't kept real hard-core time on them, but several hours each. The necklace my wife has took the longest, with the matching bracelet almost as long as the dragonback bracelet.

That dragonback bracelet is probably about 4 or 5 hours worth of work, maybe more, since it starts as a European 4-in-1 weave, then there's 3 more rows of rings added to it. The E 4-1 pattern had to be made almost 11 inches long, because each row that was added after that drew it up shorter. There's a very surprising amount of rings in it. If I were to make one out of the more expensive silver or gold plated rings (or silver with gold down the center) it would be a $50 or $60 piece.

Had my teeth cleaned yesterday so I'm "good" for another six months. < ---- see how bright and shiney?!

Also in teeth news, our other "old" cat (15 yrs) has to go to the vet next week to have her teeth cleaned and will probably have to have one or two pulled. Getting her into the carrier will require both Jeff and I, wearing Heavy gloves, and stuffing her in backwards, crossing our fingers the whole time. The one good thing is that the traveling vet was just here and trimmed her claws so less chance of being torn up! Her brother went last fall and had his done, now it is her turn.

Ha! That idea reminds me of the film where the evil character ends up riding a bomb to his obvious demise at the end. I want to say it was one of the Bond films but I'm not sure and since I'm currently on the NOOK I can't easily look it up. You're right. Kids grow up and we should be happy if they are caring and contributing members of society, and that they never stop learning.

Edit: Looked up the movie and it was a 1964 Stanley Kubrick classic "Dr. Strangelove".

Went to a sporting goods store to buy a pair of sneakers today. "Oh, no" says the young fellow. "We don't have any wide style sneakers in stock". What in the world!? I was amazed when he just shrugged as I asked what do all the people with wide feet do? I went next door to the Kohl's department store and it took me about 3 minutes to find a pair - wide, in my size, and the brand I like. Then I took them to the clerk at the checkout and confused her for a moment. She asked me if I was over 60 and I said yes and she said "Oh, then I can give you the senior discount that we offer on Wednesdays." Only problem with that, it's Thursday! We both got a laugh, I did not get a discount but now I know to plan on going there on Wednesdays.

I was going to suggest Avril Bitra - but it was a shuttle that took her to her doom, wasnt it.

It's useful to check out any senior discounts you can get. I was quite pleased and surprised to check them out. For instance, I can get quite a hefty discount at the movies on a Tuesday. And one butchery chain offers a senior discount. And public transport during off peak hours. Pity I don't use public transport!!!

I mentioned the necklace, earrings, and bracelet that I made for my wife. Here they are:

Here's detail of the bracelet and earrings. This is a variation of the Byzantine weave:

Detail of the necklace and the wire wrapping on the bloodstone:

Now you know why I only have 4 items for sale.

While I'm at it, here's a detail shot of the gold and silver Byzantine weave bracelet in the pic of the other items:

Here's the orange and blue bracelet. I twisted it just a little so you can see the two colors:

Last, here's a detail shot of the Dragonback weave bracelet:

I think I'm going to do this pattern in silver plate with a center row of gold plate.

Very nice, Draco.

Kibby and I went to an observatory at a local college tonight. It was a little cloudy so we did not get to see the moon very well. I did see some crators. Before it go cloudy we got to look through a smaller telescope. We were able to see Jupiter and 4 of its moons. We could also see to black bands going around it. We had never gotten a chance to look thought a GOOD telescope before. IT WAS SO COOL!

Kibby enjoyed the talk a man gave to her 4H group about the Netherlands. The kids did have two question that he did not know the answer to. He said that in one area that is VERY populated there was not much room for cemataries. When someone was burried they were left alone for 8 years after that, unless someone paid for the up keep, others would be burried in that plot. What the kids wanted to know was what happen to the body of the person in the plot? Was another casket put on top of the one already thers or did they move the body?

He also talked about the health care system. One of the kids asked if the goverment paid medical bill if a person got sick or hurt while in another country.

Right, burial in the Netherlands.

It is indeed custom to bury people 3 deep and that's done everywhere is you are buried in what is caleld a 'common grave' For a common grave you indeed pay for some of the upkeep to the municipality (the owner of the cemetery). So yes, 3 caskets are placed on top of each other technically but there's a layer of earth between them. Whether or not you want a tombstone is your choice and not compulsory. If you choose not to have one there will only be a number there.
Common graves usually are for a duration of 15 years (not 8). After 15 years they can be removed. Can because the municipalities often don't remove them until they need the space, so your grave can be around longer (my wife's grandfather's grave was still there after 20 years). When the grave are dug up the remains are brought together in a special 'bones facility' called a 'knekelhuis' in Dutch) and cremated collectively. I suppose ashed are spread on a special field, somewhere on the cemetery.
As for the children's question of the removal of a grave with more (unrelated) people in it: a triple grave is never removed sooner than 10 years after the last person was buried in that grave. The cemetery owner must send a mesages to the descendants/owner of that particular grave.

Now if you want to have a grave longer than those 15 years you buy a plot, so called 'private grave' they can be perpetual but sometimes also for 100 years. Of course you have to pay for that grave as long as it is in existence. If a private grave is removed they will place the tombstone elsewhere. Real perpetual grave are never touched of course.

Medical bills abroad

Healthcare in the Netherlands is financed by a dual system that came into effect in January 2006.
Long-term treatments, especially those that involve semi-permanent hospitalization, and also disability costs such as wheelchairs, are covered by a state-controlled mandatory insurance. This is laid down in a law dating back to 1968. In 2009 this insurance covered 27% of all health care expenses. The Netherlands was ranked first in a study comparing the health care systems of the United States, Australia, Canada, Germany and New Zealand.
For other costs there is the regular health insurance. This indeed pays for healthcare you happen to need if you are abroad and need it, in case of hospitalisation for instance. However, there sometimes are maximum amounts or you might have a set amount you have to pay yourself first with the insurance only paying the cost above that amount. For that and other reasons people usually take out extra insurance when they go on holiday abroad which will, for instance, will pay for repatriation, which is technically not something that would be covered under your health insurance.

So yes, my regular health insurance will pay my medical bills if I fell ill when in e.g. the USA. But there might be an amount I'd have to pay for myself (if I didn't insure that seperate) and certain indirect cost cost could also be not covered (imagine my wife having to stay longer in the US because I was in hospital there, that would only be covered if I had that seperately insured).

Also, removing someone's remains from a grave plot seems to be long-standing practice in Europe. Read Shakespeare's "A Prince of Denmark" (Hamlet). The gravediggers are digging up Yorick's remains when Hamlet picks up the skull and speaks the words most often misquoted as "Alas, poor Yorick, I knew him well...." It's actually "Alas, poor Yorick! I knew him Horatio, a fellow of most infinite jest......"

But since Yorick was the court jester and had no one to pay for the grave, he was dispossessed for a new body.

That is really interesting about the cemeteries. Jeff and I have agreed that we want to be cremated and our ashes tossed into Long Island Sound (ocean). I also do not want obituaries in the newspaper, I feel they are unnecessary. Anyone who knew me will know I'm gone and what I did with my life should be of no interest to total strangers. But, that's just my opinion and I'm sure funeral directors and newspapers would not like it!

Yesterday we went to the matinee performance of "In The Heights" at the high school that Jenn, Fred and Mike attended. It is set in present day New York City in a section where mostly immigrants from South American countries have settled. Lots of dancing, lively music, Spanish and rap! Very well done. Oh, and Mike played bass in the Pit orchestra.

Beautiful work, Draco.

Thank you Hans for the information. I like the sound of your healthcare system. When I was completing my class work in applied behavior analysis, the majority of the reseach in autism is completed in Europe. Our professor commented that with socialize medicine, the governments realize that early intervention enables people with autism to become productive members of society reducing the cost to society which is why the majority of reseach about early intervention is occuring there. This is one of my frustrations of our medical system.

On a side note, the oldest is starting physical therapy (pt) for his feet. At the same time, the doctor recommends that he go back to walking and running on the balls of his feet as he has done since birth because working on walking correctly is affecting his muscles above his ankles the reason for pt.

The youngest has started growing... after 4 years.... he is now 5 ft tall. May it continue so he does not have to have surgery this summer. To give perspective his brother is currently 6 ft tall and they were less than 1 inch apart until the youngest turned 7 thats when his growth started slowing down til it eventually stopped.

Thanks, I hope you enjoyed the chowder as much as I did when I was lucky enough to visit the Chowder Pot with you, a wonderful memory never to be forgotten

Belated Happy Birthday wishes to Jeff

He says thanks! Fred got him a heavy duty garage jack for tire changing, Jenn and Mike got him Dunkin Donut gift cards to buy his breakfast muffins and I got him a garden hose that is advertised on tv, more as a joke than anything. We all had a good laugh.

Oh, the Chowder Pot was wonderful. Wish you could have been with us!

Kibby will be starting her first college class in May, photography 101. She will need to get a 35mm camera because she will be developing film.

Good for her. I used to love my old 35mm. Now, I just have a tiny digital and it's all I need. But, for someone aspiring to a career in the field, that's the way to go.

I tried to sell all my old 35mm equipment a while back, but I couldn't bring myself to accept the lowball offer I received. I still won't give it away. There are still things I like about film cameras over the digital, and I have a pretty good digital SLR. There's better, of course, but there's also a strong learning curve on it.

I've still got a couple of Nikon F1s tucked away, and all the lenses for them. I used to keep one loaded with colour and one with black and white. Unfortunately they both need work. One has a sticky shutter, the other the shutter speed ring is locked.

I've always been a Canon fan. That always made Nikon the arch-enemy, back in the day. Both my Canon A-1 and EF are in excellent working condition, and both can use all the same lenses. My digital Canon won't use these FD lenses, so someone offers me enough, they'll own quite a collection; the A-1 and EF bodies, and:
50mm f 1.4
85mm f 1.8 (excellent portrait lens)
50mm f 2.8-3.5 macro with the 2:1 extender
35-70mm f 3.5 zoom
70-210mm f 4.5 zoom
Power winder
Wireless remote shutter release
Sunpak auto flash

I have a good one some where. The only problem is when you wind the film it does not stop where it is suppose to, it keeps going. If you remeber to stop it. I can't remember where it is.

I still got my Olympus 35 mm cameras with lenses while I am on Canon digital now. I sold some Olympus stuff when doigital was still new but must admit I haven't even tried to sell analog stuff since it won't fetch any real money.
