Ouch, Zelandeth, best of luck with getting your dad moved. I guess you will be knackered when the holidays. Come round...

Some of you might remember that around 3 years ago, I started an addition to my mobile home. It's a 14X70 foot, and I added 14X42 on to one side. Four rooms, a new master bedroom/bathroom suite, I took out the whole outside wall in the second bedroom and extended it 14 feet, and a dining room. They're all done now, except for a few minor details, like trim and so on. So I started to remodel the old, original bathroom, which desperately needs it. It's gutted. Next thing is to rip up the floor and redo all the plumbing.

But one of the minor details I mentioned is that there was never a heat duct in the new master suite.

That brings me to the picture below. It's the grille on an antique cast iron heat register that I'm restoring. I spent quite a few hours blasting decades of rust off it, disassembling and so on. Now I'm ready to paint the bottom and internal parts, and I'm going to try a product called Cerakote on the grille. Cerakote is a coating you spray on, then bake into a ceramic coating. It's used mainly on guns, to give a smooth, sometimes colorful coating that's extremely rust and wear resistant. I can hardly wait to have it in the floor in the bathroom, right next to the bedroom door, Cerakoted in a color that goes with the colors of the bathroom.

Wow, Allen, it is lovely. Make sure you enjoy your remodeling too.

I finished another semester of grad school with the help of my amazing cohort and friends. Yeah! I've 1.5 years of classes left and a dissertation to write.

Good luck with moving your father Zelandeth. I've just finished doing the same thing, with the added complication of moving myself and my cat half the length of the country into a flat that I'd never seen as well. I caught up with the last of my stuff this afternoon. At least we had more warning, but most of that was taken up with preparing the family home for auction while my brothers removed a large tree that broke in an inconveniently-timed storm and was threatening to drop a couple of major branches on the roof.

There were some surprises too - like finding diaries and sermons from an ancestor that arrived in New Zealand in 1862 - I wished I'd known they existed when I was trying to do a university dissertation on him. I also found a children's book that may have come out on the ship with that family.

My next challenge is trying to fit everything that I did manage to bring with me into a small flat with minimal wardrobe space and no decent bookcases or wall-room for them. Then finding my way around central Wellington with its one-way streets, rat-runs, back alleyways and secret shortcuts ...

At least I've got plenty of time to do it without having an elderly parent demanding my undivided attention all the time. After being my mother's caregiver for 13 years, I now regard myself as officially retired.

Well it's been a terribly slow process so far, not least because my father has been insisting on being involved in anything and everything that I've been doing - and he's quite disabled and can't really walk any faster than a fast shuffle and doesn't have any real hand strength to speak of. I've already ended up wearing a cooker because he insisted on "helping" move it - and I ended up dropping it on myself rather than him.

I repeatedly ended up telling him to take it easy and to stop over-working himself as he was going to wind up doing something like falling over and getting himself hurt.

This morning I walk in to find him having fallen over in the hallway and stuck there. Obviously in pain if trying to move, despite me repeatedly telling him to stay still. Despite getting a huge heap of abuse for it, I insisted on calling an ambulance.

Yep...He's fractured his hip. Don't know how badly yet as he's only just out of A&E and on his way to the actual ward.

I've got two days left until I need to hand the keys to the house back, probably three or four days worth of packing/moving (not even touched opening stuff at the new place), and probably a week and a half worth of cleaning, and a mountain of trash to get rid of (for some reason, you can't take a van into the household waste recycling centres...), and he's now in hospital for an indeterminate period of time...I've got a car at his old house I can't move, and a cat that I now need to look after.

Well on the plus side, he's fine in himself.

Tomorrow I'm going to see if I can get hold of the Council and get at least a few days extension on the lease, and see if I can hire a skip.

Last thing I found this evening was a stack of ten years of a monthly stationary catalogue. That gives you an idea how much stuff he has hoarded....and people say that *I* am the dragon?

...on another note, can I please go hide back in the Furry Con now? I've had enough of the Real World for one month...

Zen hugs if we could reach you we would, a twist on Anne McCaffrey and Mercedes Lackey Ship Who Searched, had a nice chat with eann http://vvaveteran.org/35-6/35-6_oneill.html http://wcpn.ideastream.org/programs/...-popular-music
Quote:
Oh, man, Susan O'Neill sent me a couple of links this morning that are so powerful to me.
First of all, following a discussion of Christmas carols/secular Christmas/holiday songs on Rob Lopresti's page,I remembered this during the discussion of WE GOTTA GET OUTTA THIS PLACE, THE SOUND TRACK OF THE VIETNAM WAR, a book by Craig Werner and Doug Bradley about the music we played and listened to in Viet Nam. The Christmas song I have trouble singing now because I always start crying in the middle of it is SILENT NIGHT.
For those of you who haven't read THE HEALER'S WAR, I'll repeat my Christmas in Vietnam story. I was working orthopedics and we had some patients who were not ambulatory. When they asked for nurses to help in the dressing room for the women artists appearing with the Bob Hope Show touring the country at that time, I declined in order to stay on the ward with the guys who couldn't go to the show. I took some popcorn and hot chocolate packets from my care package from my mother, and took my guitar over to the ward. There was a guy who was from Hawaii, a Native guy from Alaska, and two other fellows, and all of them also played some kind of instrument. So we were having our own Christmas party when in comes some of the medics wheeling stretchers and asked, "Ma'am, are your patients ready to go?"
We all asked, "Go where?" and they said "We came to take you to the Bob Hope show." So we went, my four patients on stretchers and in wheelchairs and me, and at some point in the show, I think at the end, Connie Stevens, who I remembered from a favorite TV show, sang Silent Night. I'm crying just thinking about it.
The other seasonal story from Nam for me, not music related, concerned our hospital chaplain at the time. He was an Irish priest and had a beautiful accent. When he said mass, the chapel was full of everybody--Christian, Jewish, Buddhist, Muslim, Atheist and Agnostic--not so much because it was Christmas as everyone just wanted to hear the padre do his thing! He didn't disappoint us. (He also had a poster on his door of a broken heart with a bandaid over the break and wore a hat that had "God Power" embroidered on the back).
via eann

She shared about Silent Night, I shared I sang the first verse some were I my grandmother singing
in Norwegian at our blind outreach meeting, while some play it on guitar, then in English on my dad birthday Sat.

Have a tape of her singing Marjorie William, (now Korleski) with Perry Williams Jr. (Sonny), Andrew Williams Jr, (JR) miss him medic during the VIETNAM WAR, my dad Art Korleski and mom Eunice (Cookie) Korleski, and me with Sonny on guitar, I think I still have it I hope I do.

http://ideastream-production.s3.amaz...12/1203soi.mp3 sharing via Facebook and I'm listing to they are from WI my home state.

I also was talking to Dick Hill and found a few thing his site http://dickhill.com/

Zelandeth - At least I had the help of the rest of a rather large family. We filled five small skips, and one large builders skip. I very carefully kept all the receipts for my expenditure on the skips etc to give to my brother so that I could get the money back when the house sold. My youngest sister threw them all out, despite the fact that they were clearly labelled "house receipts" and I'd shown her where and what they were. I'll bet all the house plans that I left for the new owners went the same way...

Yes, I hope you get an extension the the lase too, Zelandeth. I admire your tenacity, perseverance and yes, even patience. Not everybody would be able to deal with a dad and a situation like that. I know I couldn't have without exploding. So you have my admiration, for what it's worth!

Not quite - I also filled three dumpsters with various things for a charity recycling shop.

As I understand it, a dumpster is a large, lidded bin with wheels on - capacity is about 1-2 cubic metres - the sort of thing you usually see at the back of a business filled glass or cardboard for recycling. A skip bin is bigger and is usually delivered by a truck with a crane on it - often seen outside houses that are being renovated. I usually use the smaller one when I have to fill it myself because I can't lift stuff into a bigger one. Capacity is anything between 2 and 9 cubic metres. Bin Boys Bay of Plenty is the firm I used.

What's on here - an AC/DC concert. I can hear the melody (! if you can call it that!) as well as the beat - and my flat is four kilometres from the venue. It must be deaf-making inside the venue.

Last major concert I ever heard when I was living in town was held at the old Athletic Park when I was living in the Park Flats. We moved from there in '76. Can't remember who it was, but they were loud.

We saw it yesterday too, as an advance Christmas present for my SIL who's visiting for the holidays.

Santa was very good! I think my two favorites are tickets to Madison Square Garden to a Star Trek music and video clip show put on by an orchestra and a gift card to a spa to have my nails done (never done that before). A gorgeous shawl from a dear friend that I plan to use at a special occasion in 2017. Books, a small food processor and 8 lb hand weights.

Both Dan J. and I, his walking pneumonia came back, and he is in the hospital, overnight. I'm not at full power waiting on, a belated gits for him and I.

Thanks, I'm sorry but I've got to they gave my other half the wrong type of what he needs, so he has to have IV type. Wish we knew that a few weeks ago, waiting on mine.

Sorry haven't been here for awhile. Computer went and phone did not like this site.

Hope everyone had a good Christmas. Ours as usual was hectic. Seth, 5 yrs nephew, started having seizures again and he went to hospital for monitoring the Monday before Christmas. We expected him to be there over Christmas so Santa came the Sat before to give him the big stuff, that he couldn't play with at hospital. Medicade decided that he didn't need to be monitoring and sent him home Christmas Eve, after Santa visited him and the rest of the kids there, there. Santa brought his stocking stuffers that night as well. He going to be disappointed when he only comes once next year. Not sure what they are going to do about the seizures yet.

About a week before Christmas Hubby discovered he is severely allergic to Naproxin. It was so bad it gave him a mild heart attack. Luckily it was mild and he was sent home the day. He also now has an Eppi pen incase he has another allergy attack.

While at Dragoncon I went to the Georgia Aquarium I fell on a wet floor, screwed up my knee. Knee is much better finally. They paid all medical bill and gave me 900 dollars which is why I have a new computer.

Kibby has new job at the local theater. She started about a week before Star Wars came out and has been kept busy. Most of the time she likes it, she is glad the Star Wars crowds are dying down. She'll be happier when the colleges are back in session, it will quiet down even more then.
