Maw, I am so sorry about George. You gave him a good life and he entertained you (and us through your stories) for quite a while. He was lucky to be your rabbit!

I think Citroen's suspension grew out of the original brief for the 2CV: to be able to carry eggs across a field.

I owned three 2CVs, and an Ami Super, and used to have fun taking them round roundabouts at speed, especially if there was a cop car about. If there was a high wind they used to lean over like a racing dinghy: I used to find myself feeling for the toe-straps.

Sorry to hear about all the car trouble, Zelandeth. No ramble indeed but maybe a bit of abracadabra to some of us

Still bad weather eh, Michelle?

Like at Granath''s it seems spring has really arrived now, here in The Netherlands. Let's hope it is. We didn't have much of a winter (contrary to some of you) and even that I found irritating.

Working long and hard because the Dutch givernment thought we needed a new health system (cuts, cuts, cuts). The job is still interesting and fun but the messages I have to bring across are getting less and less so.

Weather has improved, much warmer. We had some rain yesterday, which helped a lot in clearing the roads. There was a lot of black ice Sun. night. Kibby's work closed early enough for everyone home before the roads got bad again. It will still be awhile before the ramp is clear enough to get Mom out without a lot of work. If we have to we'll clear it, but until it is needed we'll wait.

I was just thinking that when my husband and I met we didn't have a lot of money. I did have an old Studebaker. We sold that and got enough money to pay for our wedding rings. So all these years we've been "wearing" a Studebaker. True story!

This is not going to be a good year. My 5 year old nephew, Seth is not doing real well. Last year's surgery has done nothing to relive his Chiari Malformation systems. In his last four months he has not grown at all, has not gained any weight at not even an ounce. He way below age level on size. He is having a lot of leg pains and headaches. Melissa is hoping to take him to a clinic for Chiari in New York.

Melissa has been having headache bad enough that she has passed, going upstairs, along with a lot of back pain. Now the Dr. are thinking she has Chiari as well. I'm not sure when she will be tested. It would answer some of the problems she has been having. You can have it & not have symptoms until you're older.

So sorry to head Mawra. -sends hugs your way- really hope that things pick up.

Really feel like migraines and insomnia arent so bad after all.

In other news, today I mostly drowned the Xantia's engine bay in degreaser and set about cleaning up the mess I made a week or so back when I changed the fuel filter. It's not perfect but much better.

She will be getting new tyres this week and a new cambelt, water pump, auxiliary drive belt and tensioner in the next couple of weeks. Should be ready for the 500 ish mile run up to Aberdeen then.

...have to admit to having grown quite attached to Gabrielle (her reg number ends GAB so was a bit of an obvious name) in the last couple of months, so some preventative maintenance is in order I think.

Well, here's a question. Do you (and anyone else interested in answering) name all your cars? It's not something I've ever done. The only inanimate objects I've ever named were a couple of stuffed animals I had when I was little. I've known people who name almost everything, including their computers. I wonder if it is perhaps something that families do (mine did not) or maybe something that gets picked up later in life? It would be interesting to do a survey!

I've named a few cars using the letters of their number-plates as initials: hence UJB became Ursula Jane Birtwhistle. My current (non-running) vehicle is Lily because her letters are PNX (thank you Beatles).

Quite a few of my cars have had names, but not all of them. The current fleet do have names though.

The Saab is generally known simply as "The Ambassador" as it very much suits its character, and was inspired by the colour which is known as Embassy Blue.

Skoda is Tango. Let's face it, being bright (almost fluorescent) orange that was a bit of an obvious one.

Citroen is Gabriel. The registration ends GAB, and it sounded suitably French I thought.

Had a rummage around our local second hand store today, target being a 12" kid's bike that I can cannibalise for its front wheel. They usually go for about £5 and that's less than a new wheel will cost me (I want a steel one to replace the factory plastic item on the front of the C5 so that the front brake can actually do something useful). No bikes unfortunately, but I did walk out with about a dozen records for less than £15, so I was happy. Most of them look like they have never been played as well. Couple could do with a clean but seem scratch free.

Speaking of records, finally got around to actually listening to my vinyl copy of The Endless River which I was given at Christmas. Certainly seems better mastered than our digital copy - which highlights again why I never voluntarily buy music from Amazon digitally only. They always seem to foul up the ripping process. The How to Train Your Dragon soundtrack being the worst offender to the extent of being almost unlistenable on a couple of tracks where there is horrible clipping going on. ...still need to pick it up on CD at some point for that reason.

Nothing much else going on. Xantia is going in tomorrow for a new set of tyres and a wheel alignment (ironically costing me a tenner less than I paid for the car!) Which will hopefully improve its currently poor manners in the wet. In fairness the poor thing has four different tyres, three of which are bargain basement jobs and one is rotating backwards so I can't really fault it that much. New set of matched decent tyres should improve things!

I love our old vinyl records. At some point I want to get a decent player that will record onto CD's from a record. When I was a kid we had a record player with a special needle that would "cut" records. I have about two dozen of those old 78 rpm records, mostly of large family holiday gatherings. There is singing, silly poetry reading and a lot of good memories. At one point when I still had a record player I recorded most of them to cassette tapes. Even that medium is out dated now.

If you want to talk old, I have one of the earliest Edison phonographs, a large horn and a box of "cylinder" records, in working condition!

Just read about the death of Leonard Nimoy. How sad, he was 'only' 83. We've lost yet another icon.

Peter, I do that too, I name my cars using the license plate letters. Since the latest Kia C'eed sportwagon executive has TJP in the plate it has been TSJILP, the sound that birds make, to me

Jeff texted me about Leonard Nimoy and I cried. Star Trek plus a few other shows and books started me on a life long love of Science Fiction. It was ahead of its time, tackling social problems that we still have to this day.

My thoughts are with you and your family, mawra.

On Monday, we took my dad in and found out that the main cause of his rapid decline was related to two things: 1) the specialist request for a machine that would allow my dad to track one of his meds that he needed but could become to toxic was denied; 2) that when his medical group changed his primary care doctor a year ago the new doctor did not continue to check his blood once a month for the said med build up to toxic levels. Thus, it was over 200% above safe levels in his blood and was causing internal bleeding.

My dad refused to go back in the hospital and his specialist agreed to treat him as an outpatient. As of today, the med (the one that has become toxic) has decreased in his blood. His medical group has agreed to refill his pain meds. His pain has become intolerable as the internal bleeding continued. They agreed because my step mom quietly but firmly reminded them that my dad's present condition was due to their "medical neglect".

His specialist wants to do and outpatient blood plasma transfusion soon at a hospital. My dad has agreed to it. His specialist thinks that a lot of the damage from the internal bleeding could be reversed. It won't cure my dad. He still has COPD and congestive heart failure to name a few from his years as a fireman/paramedic, but it could give him back some quality of life and allow him to have more time with his family. Otherwise, our time with him will have been cut short due to medical error.

I've slingshot emotionally between sadness and anger. I'd accepted my dad's condition and that I'd not have the same amount of time with him that I would have had if he'd chosen a "safer" profession, but to have that time shorten by "medical neglect" is not something I can accept.

Onto other news, today's loss of Leonard Nemoy has sadden me. He was one of my first heroes. I always wanted to be a Vulcan.

May everyone have a awesome weekend.

Hope they can get your father's pain under control, Moonlady.

Kibby is happy she is at Mysticon with a parent in sight. When she pointed that out when I dropped her off the person in charge of her LARP group told that he was still there and would keep an eye on her. There are also members of her Star Trek group there. I am not in the least worried.

The LARP group mostly arrived Thurs. for a pre-con party and gaming. Sense her class on Fri. was canceled she talked me into taking her up Thurs. I fell going out to the car to pick her up. Was fine until got up to Roanoke then my knee and back started hurting. Took some meds and stayed the night there. Someone offered Kibby some moonshine, as she was saying no, someone in the group told the guy that she was too young. Personally I don't care if she drinks a little. I do not want anyone getting into trouble serving someone underage. She was happy when I left yesterday. It is nice getting away from parents.

Spent a large portion of the day chasing numbers around a page.

Our latest energy bill has come in somewhere in the region of double what we expected, even with power over here costing GBP 0.17 per KWh.

Think we have some rough idea what's going on now, but will have the meter out tomorrow to do some tests to make sure we don't have a "leak" in any of the always on appliances, plus will be taking hourly current readings from our mains input for a couple of months to get a better idea of our daily load profile.

I am have to pick Kibby up in Roanoke tomorrow around noon. It is close to a two hour drive, each way. Normally I would not mind. They are calling for a wintery mix over night and into the morning. As cold as it has been it will turn to ice as soon as it hits the ground and roads. When I have to leave it will be icy. I am hoping that the main road I will be taking will be busy enough that it will not be icy.

My mother is out of the hospital and in a convalescent home for a while. We went up to see her today. The drive up took about 45 minutes to an hour longer than it should have because of the weather. The trip back took about 2 and a half to 3 hours longer than it should have, all because of weather and the idiots who don't know how to drive in it. The ones who think they're invincible because they are driving their 4WD pickup/SUV.

We sat on I-44 less than 2 miles from our exit for about 40 or 45 minutes, thanks to a string of accidents that had the highway closed for most of the day.

Some days you get the bear and some days the bear gets you.

Stay safe tomorrow, Michelle.

Another five or so inches of snow last night. My husband got a bit more practice with the snow blower.

I need to go to the safe deposit box and see if the title to Mike's motorcycle is in there. He has decided to sell it. It was a good "first" bike but he does not use it very much and it's a waste having it sit in the garage. Someday he may get a "touring" sort of bike with windshield, saddlebags, etc. and a more comfortable seat for Jenn.

I'm glad your weather was less nasty than predicted, maw. Allen, people do not know how to drive in bad weather. Bald tires (possibly) and ice/snow do not mix. Then you get the huge SUV's and drivers who think they are invincible - until they end up upside down in a snow bank! I will be the first to admit I am not a great driver BUT I know my limitations and I am careful.

Moonlady, that is horrible about your dad. I would be furious!

I hope things get a bit easier for your parents, Allen and Moonlady!

I agree with you, I also always wanted to be a Vulcan.

People with 4 wheel drive HAVE to relearn every year that 4 wheel drive does no good in ice. Some how they can not remember from one year to the next.

Mom had a bad weekend, sick again. She now has a sinus infection. At least this time we managed to get her to the Dr. She should be better in a few days. She is shaky so I decided to take her power chair, which does not like mud, ice or snow.

Had to do without my lappy all over the weekend as I had a problem with windows 7.

Whenever I switched on it would announce "Installing windows updates. 0% complete. Do not switch off. After 10 - 12 minutes this would change to "Reverting windows updates ..." for another 10 -12 minutes.

After this I could finally do some work.

Then, when I finished it would announce "Installing 126 updates. Do not switch off."
It never got beyond 120 because it got to its power-down time!

So; it had to go and be sorted out.

I had a similar problem with my new computer. I wanted to optimize the hard drive but the display kept timing out and the computer would turn off. I finally realized it was going to take longer than I wanted to sit and watch, so I set the power saver to never turn off the computer or the monitor and set the screensaver to appear only after an hour.

The optimization ultimately ran for 3 days! Once it wa finished, I set the power saver back to its default and everything is now working fine.

It sounds like your computer just needed a little additional time to finish.

Relatively quiet day here today finally giving me a chance to tie up some loose ends.

Not least gave my poor Citroen a wash for the first time since I bought it back in November.

Honestly I have no idea how many years it is since that poor thing last had a decent clean. There was black grime on absolutely everything. Blew a good deal of the loose clearcoat off the roof with the pressure washer so I can set about painting over those patches again now without having to spend hours peeling it off.

Also swept a couple of tonnes of dead leaves into a pile in one corner of the garden (which I'm sure the wind will redistribute to where they came from in the first place by morning) and attack some of the paving with weedkiller as there's more grass growing there than in the garden.

It has warmed up a bit. I hope this means winter is over. Now we just have to deal with melting snow. Here it is not very bad. Up north there will be a LOT of flooding

Not a bad day.

Started tidying up the garden post winter a bit (by the first egg, HOW does bamboo grow and spread so fast?!?), got the barbecue ready to go when the weather gets reliably better (reckon the 18C today was a fluke!) And generally sorted out some loose ends.

Then met up with some friends for lunch, and finished the day by going to watch a hockey game at the local ice rink. Our team won, even though it did go to penalties due to a couple of really lucky shots by the other team! Should have been 5-2 to us really! Still great fun to watch.

I love watching hockey! We used to go to Madison Square Garden in New York to see the Rangers play fairly often. Great fun. The expression that describes hockey (over here, anyway) goes something like; "we went to a fight, and a hockey game 'broke out' !"

Sounds about right!

Milton Keynes Lightning are our team of course. Not doing great this year, but that says nothing about the future. They definitely play far better on the attack, only losses I've seen so far have been when they have gone for the defensive game. Last one was the best though, already seven-two up, one of our players went for a centre-court slap shot with two seconds left and landed it right in the middle of the net. Suffice to say the crowd went wild.

I'm not usually a sports person (snooker excepted), but I do admit to having been hooked by the whole atmosphere and pace of ice hockey.

Other real highlight of the day now I think about it, was given the temperature being able to go out for a brief drive with all the windows open. Do miss having a convertible...but can still enjoy that feeling. ...reminded me how desperately I need a haircut though!

Changed the oil in the Xantia. Me and the driveway ended up wearing a significant portion of the old stuff.

*mutters something unprintable about poorly thought out undertray designs*

Reckon the sump plug being barely finger tight may have something to do with the oil leak too...filter wasn't much better either...

Just remember, oil filters need to be installed no tighter than 1 quarter turn after the gasket contacts. Sorry, but I don't know what the metric equivalent of a quarter turn would be.

Indeed! They usually get tighter over time though and this looks like it's been on a while...Didn't require any effort to remove at all!
