Most people talk about about buttoning up their coat: and then buttoning it downwards.
About the only thing that ever got/gets buttoned UP was/is old-fashioned buttoned trouser flies!

Thanks for the link, P'ter. I show it to Melissa

I say shoes and socks as well.

I've decide that we do not have three tiny kittens, we have a thundering herd of elephants. There is no way 5 week old kittens can make that much noise running about.

By the way, I'm a real butter fanatic too.

It makes more sense than saying "Im putting on my socks and shoes". That just doesn't read right.

I think it's "shoes and socks" not because of the order you put them on, but because that's the order you see them in once they're on.

Btw, "stuff" is a highly scientific term! ;-)
Do you butter fans like salted or unsalted? We use salted as a matter of course, but if a recipe calls for unsalted, blowed if I can tell the difference.

Older than time, and just as wise!

I prefer salted butter. We try not to use very much salt, or sugar for that matter so I think we "get" to have what we like. I don't do very much baking so I don't think I've come across a recipe that calls for unsalted butter.

I say socks and shoes, but that's because I'm Finnish, and never wear shoes indoors at home, or in the home of a good friend. I also very rarely attend the sort of formal party that requires you to wear shoes, sitting in stockinged feet at a friend's house is normal.

Salted butter. Unsalted butter is nasty tasting by comparison. But then I salt almost everything, except watermelon.

I button coats and shirts up, not down.

Here's a better one: Pants with a zipper and a button at the top; button and then zip or zip then button? (Yes, I got the idea from Babylon 5). I'll carry this one even one step further yet. My Correction Officer's uniform has shirts that have a button at the top and bottom, and a nearly full-length zipper. My pants, I button then zip. My shirt I zip then button.

If you do the top button up first it makes pulling up the zip easier. Allen, why on earth a button at the foot of the zip?

I like lots of salt with everything. I'd be very bad for myself if I ate porridge every day - I like about half a teaspoon of salt in it. And nothing else. Oh, except milk.

Maw - Kibby will get very good at making biscuits. I can see she'll need to practice at home

Lilly, salted or unsalted; it's on the package and I'm assaulted guy if you must know. Salt is bad for you. Natural salts, that you get enough of without adding salt, is more than enough salt for a human. The only thing I use table salt on/for is a boiled egg! It's herbs and spices I love to use, not salt.

Oh, and you taste it of course. But how many people eat butter right out of the package? Apart from Priscilla's dog of course.

It's a shirt. the buttons are real (functional) at the top and bottom and for the length of the zip they're only sewn on the flap to make it look like a true button-up shirt.

And on the shirt it makes no difference if you do the top button first or not. Pulls the same.

Lily, salted butter; however I try to use sea salt or mineral salt at home especially because my youngest loves to eat salt.

Interesting conversation about "shoes and socks" (see I do it too ) and zippers. Here's a tidbit, my youngest is allergic to nickel so he has to avoid clothing with zippers or metal of any kind because it almost always has nickel in it. Also, coins have nickel so he'll often joke he can't receive change back so they have to give him a dollar instead. He can hold coins just not for long.

I like the practice of not wearing shoes in Finland, granath.

Hopefully, you are over halfway through packing, Kath.

I've actually seen some zippers made of what looks like plastic, though maybe the zipper pull was metal. Not getting change could be an advantage if you could get the sales clerk to "round up" all the time!

I have (in the past) come across work trousers with velcro instead of buttons or zipp.

Actually, around 1960, a friend of mine also had a pair of stage trousers with velcro right down the outside seams of the legs. You could "de-bag" him in one swift movement (but it was noisy!)

Germany are playing France today in the World Cup. The kids have their flags and their facepaints, and it's on early enough that they can stay up to watch the whole thing. Plus, we have one of Matt's friends for a sleepover. Should be a noisy, fun evening - especially if Germany win!

Ran out of cold water this morning. ...wait...how can that happen? Checked downstairs...have water there fine...turns out the fill valve on our main cold water header tank has died, sticking in the closed position - well nearly closed anyway. This may explain some slightly odd behaviour of the showers since we moved in. If it was just the valve to change I would just do it, have noted that the cross braces on the tank have broken though so want a plumber to take a look, see if it can be repaired or if we need a new tank. Last thing we want is it splitting and dumping 250 litres of cold water over the master bedroom!

Yikes. Being in a rainforest might be a nice experience, but not inside the house!

It is supposed to rain all day which is better than having a hurricane, like some people! I hope it stops long enough for the kids to grill for the friends they've invited. Thank goodness for the ping pong table in the finished basement!

Rain, Cilla? Send some our way, we can use it. The garden is dry and we are right out of our rainwater, the supply totally gone. Over 39 degrees C today here, nice temps I think but we could do with some water (but not in the master bedroom!)

39 C, Hans? Wow! It's nice here too, about 20 C, which feels downright hot after the daytime max temps of around 15 C we've had the last few weeks.

You might have a legal claim on the surveyor for missing the state of the tank.

That's a question we'll ask if it's not an easy fix as it's clearly been in that state for a while. Valve don't bother me, the snapped braces however do!

Good luck Zelandth and hopefully it is a quick easy repair.

Enjoy Kath!

Sorry folks, that 39 was a typo and should have been 30 although we did hit 32 for a while.
