Small bump here. Book 7 has a completed manuscript. The title is Crucible of Gold, and it is releasing March 6, 2012.
In addition, you can read the premise here: http://www.temeraire.org/crucible-of-gold/ Unfortunately, there are a number of spoilers in that. So fans may want to wait. |

Here's hoping it's a good one - Tongues of Serpents was unfortunately rather weak in my opinion. Loved Victory Of Eagles though!
Dunno if it's been mentioned here, but there's a short story from the Temeraire universe that's been published online called "Feast Or Famine". It details a scene briefly mentioned in Throne Of Jade, where Temeraire and Maximus attempt to get breakfast before anybody else is awake... Oh. Wait, it seems to have been taken down for whatever reason. Ah well. |

![]() Quote:
She likes writing travelogues. It was a... difficult read for me because it seems as if all of Temeraire's flexibility, creativity and assertiveness from Victory was forgotten. Instead we got a book (similar to the third novel) save the difficult, deadly traveling went from ~70 pages to ~140 pages with little plot or character growth accomplished in the mean time. |

Naomi Novik can do travelogues well; I rather enjoyed the journeying in Throne Of Jade, and to a lesser extent, in Empire Of Ivory, but for some reason I found the travelling in Black Powder War and Tongues Of Serpents tiresome.

Found the story I mentioned earlier - the site's been reshuffled recently and so I missed it the first time.
http://www.temeraire.org/feast-or-famine/ BTW, for fans of the series, I've done a map (hurr, what a surprise) for the Temeraire Wiki showing what the world's borders looked like at this point in history, with a few minor changes to accommodate the differing history of Temeraire's world - such as the fact that the Incans apparently were able to defeat the Conquistadors. I need to fix several things wrong with this: *Serbia's borders are incorrect - they are the modern borders. *Spain's borders depict the situation during the Peninsular War, when Napoleon fought for control of Spain. However, I don't believe these borders were ever observed - both sides claimed the land, and I think this layout just shows what Napoleon effectively held at one point. *Paraguay's (and South America's) borders need to be checked to make sure they are historically accurate. *India might be a bit TOO accurate - too many provinces, when they might have been grouped together. *Map needs to be dated - map is currently drawn in such a way that it can be edited to show territorial changes over; hence Duchy Of Warsaw and Finland (originally held by Sweden, later held by Russia) are both depicted. |

I just finished his majesty's dragon and really liked it. I was wondering, did they ever talk about talking on or off the riding harnesses of the dragons in the pern books? they did talk about it in his majesty's dragon.

More about checking the fighting straps, and change them three or four time a turn, Moreta Dragonlady of Pern, and few more come to mind, Using hide, of the wherries they hunter had in Dragonsdawn, easier on dragon hide, also how the dragon lowed his/her head, and the dragon harness was tighted before the rider straped him/her self in, keeping well oiled, mending leathers, T'ral doing his leather working.

The cover for the upcoming seventh book has been released:
![]() Looks pretty good, although I'm disappointed that they've changed back to the insignia from Victory Of Eagles - it throws off the pattern established by the earlier book art. If they wanted to redesign the book covers, they should at least wait until the series has finished, and then use that for a re-printing! On another topic, I recently drew an image of what I think the titular character's family tree looks like, based on the few bits of information given in the series (probably best not to look at it if you haven't read Throne Of Jade yet). See it and the logic behind the placement of each character here: http://amcalmaron.deviantart.com/art...Tree-258177116 |

possible spoilers!!!:
the giant cliff hangers at the end of the books kind of annoy me(i have just finished victory of eagles now.) someones ALWAYS abut to die or something. or if it is the happy ending, there's a "wait, but what about..." just because they where published 3 at a time doesn't mean i can read them one after another.(of corse, thats exactly what i ended up doing, and have been rushing around every night for the past 7 or-so days after i finished that book, to get everything done.) my favorite book was the first one, however, i DO like iskera quite a lot. ![]() |

POSSIBLE SPOILERS (and a bit of speculation on my part)!!!!!
Things should work out well for the characters in the end. If you look at the timeline of the books so far (such as how many books each book covers) things are certainly building up to the battle that will bring the Napoleonic Wars to an end (although not necessarily the same way they ended historically). Personally, I wonder how Lien's story will end... Methinks Laurence's future is secure for the time being (the blurbs for book seven briefly discuss this); provided he doesn't get killed in battle or something in the final book, he and Temeraire will likely be involved in beating Napoleon to some extent and come out war heroes. Regardless of whether he makes it back to Britain, he and Temeraire have made enough allies along the way to have a "home" to return to. Temeraire should also be safe - I seem to recall that it's been hinted he'll make it back to China at some point (perhaps he'd return there to his family after the eventual death of Laurence) - unless the author decides to kill him off in the final book to shock readers, although I doubt this would happen. It's also worth noting that given what we know about the life expectancy of dragons, Temeraire would be elderly by "our" time and perhaps even nearing the end of his life - perhaps this would be covered in an epilogue? Something new to go with this; a map showing the territorial changes over the course of the French Revolutionary Wars and the Napoleonic Wars. Should help people get a better sense of the world in those times, and also know where the action's taking place!

Almaron, your charts are off -- I think -- where it concerns my country.
In this time wgat is now The Netherlands and Belgium was still one country, but that aside. Already in 1793 the French stood at the southern Netherlands (what is now Belgium and the most southern provinces (Noord-Brabant and Limburg). In the winter of 1794-1795 they marched in=to "Holland" proper (The Netherladns above the great rivers Maas and Rhine, a natural divide). The Netherlands was occupied. In 1795 Stadhouder (we had no monarchy then) William V fled to England. In 1707 we were also totally defeated at sea by the French. In 1799 the Brits and Russian liberated parts of northern Holland. In 1809 the British landed in southern Holland (Zeeland province) but they retreated again. In 1813 the French went home except for one city in the north whose commander didn't believe Napoleon could/had fallen and he presevered until May 1814! :-) Until 1913 the Dutch celebrated the liberation from the French in the way we now still celebrate the liberation from the Nazi's in 1945! So there was much hardship. There were also many good things, mainly in civil services, on municipal level and in the political system. from 1705-1801 our country was called the Batavian Republic (under the French) from 1801-1806 it was the Batavian Commonwelath In 1804 Nappie became emperor and he put his brother on the Dutch 'throne' as king in 1806, so we were the Kingdom of Holland from 1806-1810 but King Louis was far to popular and actually well liked in my country. His brother couldn't stomach that and he made The Netherlands part of the First French Empire in 1810. In 1813 William V's oldest son returned to the country and was ratified as king by the Vienna Congres in 1815. We have been a monarchy ever since.

The latest Temeraire book - Crucible of Gold - is now out! Actually, it's been out for several days now, but I've only just ordered it (along with the previous book, which I hadn't yet bought). Looking forward to its arrival!!!
I'll fix map mistakes soon - when I can see the state of things in South America, I'll update that, and I'll deal with the Netherlands (have I got them wrong? I think I included most of the events you listed (except for the British invasion; I don't remember that being mentioned! Darn useless resource sites!); although I might have left out some of the more short-lived border changes, so the map focuses on what the region looked like for the majority of the year (for example, a few of the Italian states were very short lived, and it wasn't possible to show all the changes on a map like this). |

I just bought the first book in her series yesterday, after meeting her. She's really nice and very smart, did a cool panel on alternate history with Todd McCaffrey and some others. So I felt obliged to buy her book after talking to her for a few minutes and getting a rave review from Todd. Will chime in once I get to the book to read!

Eighth book's out now; Blood of Tyrants! Finished reading it a few days back, and it was very good! Although I got a bit confused at times as to what was going on; there were a few too many jumps from one scene to another at times.
...methinks this would be a good time to fix that dratted map of mine. |
