Yes, the hills in the background are part of the isle of Skye.

I THOUGHT I sort of recognised it.

I travelled from here to Inverness in August 1962. I do not remember much about it: I was suffering from water poisoning at the time.

I had to get from Skye to Lowestoft and had to go by train as coaches didn't have toilets on at that time.

My single ticket was valid for three days and I got to Lowestoft with two hours to spare!

So, you should be able to tell me where this is then, P'ter!

I was not after the island in the background

Right, P'ter's got it.

When travelling (by rail / backpacking) with my wife all across the UK back in 1983 I absolutely needed to make the trainride from Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh (and back) I'd seen on the telly in one of Michael Palin's railway programs (I'm a great fan of Michael and not only because of the Holy Handgrenade of Antioch... and A Fish Called Wanda)

Anyway, the trainride is absolutely fabulous and I can recommend it to anyone visiting beautifully rugged Scotland. Problem was we were still in Inverness the day before we had to be at London Gatwick to fly home... So we took a night train from Inverness (a sleeper train with only bunks, not even a seating place unless you sat rather cramped on the bed), leaving there at about 19.00, arriving at London Euston in the middel of the next day with not much time to spare. A taxi brought us hastily to the airport and we made check in just in time. It felt like quite an adventure...

Here are a few pictures:

Inverness

and a few shot from the train
