Default A Pern Moment

I had a Pern moment yesterday.

There has been a lot of fires in my area lately, filling the air with smoke and other material. So, as the sun was setting, it appeared red. The first thing that came to my mind was Red Star.

I just thought that a little funny wanted to share it with everyone here.

I have too. I remember watching a flight of birds (cattle egrets, I think) in the distance and thinking they looked almost like dragons would when far, far away.

Funny looks have been directed into my general area. ^^;

It's somethimes odd things that trigger likeness in other things. -Chuckles-

I'm with you guys...I've had a few of those kind of moments...especially out here when on occasion, the setting sun looks as red as the *Red Star* is touted to look...only much larger, and a lot more menacing looking. I do have to admit though it is also a very lovely site to see.

I remember once being on a walk and seeing a group of butterflies flying and swirling around each other and was put in mind of a fair of fire-lizards in a mating flight with the gold in the lead with bronzes and browns behind her and the blues way back at the bottom LOL

I've used Shardz before too, and occasionally Faranth when IMing a fellow Pern fan. And I've also had the thought that a storm cloud looked like thread.

It often helps to keep myself from crying at each particularly deep jump - dragon will never let you to fall down.

off I suppose, I have some sensitivity to fast changes of altitude (or pressure?). Therefore, turbulence brings usually instinctive panic and isn't funny for me. Anyway, I have to visit my parents in Kiev (Ukraine) at least two times per year - by plane, of course - and to fly also to conferences.

Yes...."shards" does come out in regular conversation at times, then I get funny looks....I just quietly wave it off, mumbling under my breath: (.... it's a Pern thing, you wouldn't understand, and you really need to read the books to get it!!....)

Another one, though not a Pern one is: "You silly little bint." From Richard Adams "Maia". A "bint" can be pretty much whatever you want it to: silly little girl, child, idiot...and some derogatory choices as well!!

I had to have a large blister from a mosquito bite lanced a few weeks ago, a legacy of our family holiday in Italy. It hurt like mad when I had a shower - all that water on raw skin, ouch! - but I comforted myself by thinking that at least it wasn't a Threadscore!

That's definitely a Pern moment!

I 'saw' Ruth in the clouds once. Well, saw a cloud that reminded me of a white dragon, and who else could that be but Ruth? I wish I had a camera or (tho not available at the time) a cell phone with a camera in it. It reminded me of the cover of All The Weyrs of Pern, wings outstretched with his head turned looking over one wing. I was lucky enough to be at a stop light so got to watch it for a minute or so.

Oh, that reminds me, I saw Ruth in the clouds once, too, or his tail at least! *giggles with the happy memory*

Hans and Anneli saw it too -- it was a perfect spade-tipped dragon tail arcing out from a larger cloud. And it was while the three of us were in Ireland together, heading to Dragonhold after some other adventure for the day. I've got a picture of it somewhere, though it's unfortunately a very poor picture.

Oh I think I will use this too when we get on the plane next week...for the first part of our trip we will be flying over most of the U.S. so I can look out the window and imagine that I'm flying Dragonback...and with my imagination it might just seem like it to... At least I'll be warmer than on a real dragon.

This last week I saw a huge smoky looking dragon in our sunset...it was perfectly formed...but reminded me of Elizabeth Kerner's evil Demonlord Dragon...instead of Anne's Pern Dragons. It's truely remarkable and speaks well of mans imagination with what we all can see in the clouds that go floating by.

Try salt or bicarb-soda or if failing that, use trusty old toothpaste on mozzie bites, bee stings etc. I use it when I get stung by bees and as I hate the itchy and scratchy side of it (it really gives me the iirets), toothpaste saves the day. Would that come under Pernese medical uses if they had toothpaste? It's a thought.

We had a lunar ecclipse and the moon looked like it was the red star over the horizon.
