Default Blast off! - For Lady Maelin

So, I'm finally back at home and I can't keep away from the woodwork for more than a day and a half.

Lady Maelin and I were chatting a short while ago about projects and the like, and We started talking about spaceships. Well, I decided to have a go at making one myself out of wood, and here's the result. It took me about 4/5 hours yesterday to make.

The two colours you can see are two different pieces of wood. I glued them together, then put them on the lathe/bansaw afterwards so that they appear to be one piece. The joins are completely smooth and un-noticeable when you try to find a ridge.

NOTE: This is not for sale! Lady Maelin wanted me to make it -very- clear that this was 100% hers and therefore the rest of you can look but not touch!

It looks fantastic, even if I'm wondering a bit about the holes on the fins...

Aye, it's Helva. Or the best I could do. The picture I have has the red bits in the wings, but I'm not 100% pleased with the body. It doesn't look streamlined enough.

Granath - The 'holes' are where the tacks went. (Which you can't see from that angle.)

...Never again will I take it upon myself to try and attach something flat and square to something round and circular. >.<

How about some short lengths of dowel glued into in each hole and then sanded down smooth?

I think it's beautiful! I had to go back and look at the holes. I first thought they were emblems or markings my eyes couldn't make out. Either way, I wouldn't worry too much about them, but if they bother you either P'ter's suggestion or some sort of filler would probably take care of them.

I also love it just as it is! Now that is how a proper ship should look, at least in my mind.

Sara - maybe some sort of mortis type thing would be better? Cut grooves in the curved ship and then slide the square fins up in them? Just a thought that occured to me.

I did think about doing that, and my grandad and I thought long nd hard about the different joins and whatnot. (My grandad started out as a joiner), but we don't have the equipment for it. I have to do everything I make on a lathe/bansaw.

I've done some markings around the tacks. Spaceships have nuts and bolts, right? xDD

It looks great and very special.

I agree with Sara on the body, it might have been even better when longer/sleeker; but the wood grain, colours and overall design are great!

Ah, when you're limited on your equipment you do what you can.

I neglected to tell you that I love your ship! The idea for the joins got the best of me and I'm sorry! I think you did a fantastic job and putting the different color woods was a fabulous idea!

I like the shape of her. If she was long and thin she might become less stable in take-offs and landings.

I agree Sandi...I think her shape is just perfect for her take offs and landings!!! Besides with her fins being a bit larger, give way for her beautifully inlaid woods to be better admired.

Sara my friend...you know already how I feel about her....I really love her and nothing is going to change that... well except to make me love her even more when I hold her in my own hands, and place her onto her shelf!!! Gee, I sure hope that this conversation doesn't sound to weird or kinky.... .............

Wow! Yet another fantastic piece of woodwork.

I guess everyone can think of a different way of putting it together, but I think you chose the best method for the equipment you have. Those fins are quite narrow, so they would need thin and accurately cut joints or dowels to fix them as neatly as you did. (I'm an engineer at heart. I can't help it. )

I now have it sitting on my dest...and I can honestly say that it is stunningly beautiful, and very cleverly done...I can't imagine it being any better designed or made than it is. I love it very much indeed.
Thank you again so very much Sara...
