Yeah, our country does that too when the ground is waterlogged and you suddenly get 100's of millimeters of rain. Can be very irritating when your garage, garden or cellar is full of water.
Currently our government is paying attention to the problem of water storage because with the Netherlands it's not only rain but also the melting water from several mountain areas, among them the Alps. We are at the end of the drain so to speak and if the weather warms up and snow melt faster/more we end up with all the water (well, the germans very much too).

Hope your house didn't suffer too much damage, AM.

No damage at all, Hans, thanks. We had about an inch of water in the basement at one point...which basically drained and dried over-night. I live on an island, but it's shaped sort of like a hat... a brim around the edge, then rising.

Glad to know you're doing alright AnnMarie and that your basement is dry...I can and have gone through earthquakes by the score...but it would terrify me to be anywhere near a flood....shiverrrrr !
