I'm hard-pressed to choose just one other favorite... The list includes Lisanne Norman, Julie E. Czerneda, Tara K. Harper, Diane Carey, and Diane Duane.

I also have a fondness for Andre Norton. I was reading her way back when all the other science fiction authors were writing nothing but doom and gloom and the end of the universe. Norton was a pick-me-up.

I second Beast Master and its sequel, Lord of Thunder. Remember loving that when I read it.

Also recommend the Moonsinger series. The first 2 books in that series Moon of Three Rings and Exiles of the Stars have been rereleased recently as Moonsinger. I seem to like the books that have animals in them.

If you go by the proviso that if you have every book, or almost every book, written by that author then they must be a favourite, then my this list would have about 30 names on it.
But with most of those authors I may have only read a few of the books, then bought the rest to eventually read later.

If you go by authors who's books you re-read, then these are some of my favourites;
Lois McMaster BUJOLD
Alan Dean FOSTER
Leo FRANKOWSKI
Neil GAIMAN
Steven GOULD
Simon HAWKE
Mercedes LACKEY
George R. R. MARTIN
Anne McCAFFREY
L. E. MODESITT, Jr.

Hans, did you ever find the Judith Merkle Riley book Devil Water? Was it as good as the first two books, Vision of Light and In Pursuit of the Green Lion?

I like Mary Stewart, both the Merlin books and her mystery/romance ones.

My favorite (besides Anne) is Robin McKinley. I wish she'd get more prolific, as each book seems better than the last!

I like Mary Stewart's romances too. I think that many of her main characters were very advanced, considering the times in which they were written. For example, a young wife finds out her husband may be having a fling with a circus beauty. Does she cry or throw things or call a lawyer? Nope. She goes looking for him.

I can't really decide on a favorite. There are too many things to consider to make a statement like that. But another I haven't seen listed so far is an oldie but goodie: Hal Clement. Oh, and Jules Verne hasn't been mentioned yet either, has he?

I guess my list will be similar to many but I would have to divide it into dragon and non-dragon lists - some may be in both. The difficultly I have is that some books from an author I may but others may be and we have many hundreds of books which we enjoy so I'll stick to my top picks.
Dragon: In order:
AMC ALL
Robin Hobb - not so much for dragon content as for development all nine books are amazing!
Naomi Novik
no particular order:
Barbara Hambly (Dragonsbane books)
George RR Martin
non dragon:in order:
tie for 1st -Terry Pratchett
tie for 1st -Maureen McHugh (we're prejudice cuz she's a friend)
George RR Martin
Sherry Teppar
no particular order:
Jean M Auel
David Brin

I'm always looking for other (dragon) books to read - if anyone has any recommendations.
Maybe we could suggest an author and book(s) to read and why.
My first recommendation would be the Robin Hobb books (three series of three each). Although they don't deal directly and continually with dragons, the writing is amazing. Character development is well paced and very well written. I suggest they be read in order as there are great surprise connections between them you wouldn't want to miss. I found myself so caught up in each book that when I finished one I HAD to have the next one.
She definitely leaves you wanting more (and more!) My husband read them and them too.
If anyone reads them from this recommendation, please let me know what you think!

Luci - you should try Elizabeth Kerner, who's done an interesting trilogy with dragons. They're good bood, and she's a sweetie, wife of Anne's "official" astronomer Steven Beard. They both belonged to the forum on Anne's site, back in the old days.

The books are:
Song in the Silence
The Lesser Kindred
Redeeming the Lost

I have an enormous thing for Jeff Noon at the moment - he's got hard edges as a writer, nothing ever becomes sentimental or mawkish, which does a lot to give a grounding to some very *surreal* stories.

Any of his vurt novels are a good place to start - they're set in a drug metaphor induced 'dreaming' and are just some classy sci-fi

Wow um dead or still living? There are so many authors I love, its like winning an oscar and trying to include everyone in your speech... I would just say " the list is too long... Thank you everyone."
However Anne is the only author in 20 yrs to exclusively capture my attention.(bought every book written)
The last time was my stephen King phase. horror is not my bag but I liked his writing style. Its the same with Anne... and Todd for that matter.
I have heard alot of grumblings since July about Todd and cannons or whatever. I enjoy his writing style. Its fresh and its endorsed by his mum on the first 2-3 pages! possible that the self rightous fanfic peeps didn't read that? the very same are calling the cut and paste author of eragon an artist.
poppycock! I hope Todd writes more... and I wouldn't care if it was a computer manual. Who wants to be the "son of" for the rest of their life?

I like Todd's stuff, but I haven't bothered to read Eragon or Temeraire as they have obvious, and admitted bits they've nicked. Todd's stuff is at least original, just as Dragondays or Dragonchoice (I picked these cos they're good, not for any other reason)is original based in Anne's universe. They follow the same rules but have their own interpretations.

I love Dragon Choice...it is a fantastic story/book...I reads like one of Anne's own stories, and in my opinion is well worth the time. I haven't gotten time yet to read Dragondays, although I did download it for future reading.

I have bought all of Anne and Todd's books, and I have read one of Todd's so far and I liked it well enough... hopefully he will settle into his own on Pern and feel more at ease, and I am looking forward to reading more of his stories.

I also love and read The Dune books and most any of the Star Trek, and of course I love reading all of my art books, they take up most of my reading time, when I am not deap into one of Anne's stories.
