My family members are starting to get twitchy with my collecting. I've heard the words 'Yes, but how do you know exactly what you already have?' over a dozen times...just because I have two 1st editions of RoP.

Sara...Make a list now ...knowing you and how lucky you have been at finding those odd treasures in your charity shops...soon you will be over run with them like so many of us here happily have...

...That's true. I have Becky's guide, which I attempt to consult on a regular basis...( ) I'm thinking making a -glance at- list would be a good idea...otherwise I'm just going to let it get out of hand and before I know it, I won't know where to start!

Hmm, while you're at it why not put all your books in a database/spreadsheet. That's how I started and many thousands of books and tens of years later I'm still rateful I did!

It's called the BoomBase

Sara - I'm glad the Guide is helping you!
But a spreadsheet or database of some kind on your computer is a necessity when collecting.

Default Keeping Track

Alright, I decided to start a new thread for this, since I felt guilty about blathering on, on one of Hans' own threads. So here goes...

I've only been collecting Anne's books properly since last March, and my grandparents are already starting to get twitchy about the way I keep track of things. Currently, Ebay is my biggest Enemy, since I see something and go "Oooh! That looks interesting -Clicks 'Watch this item button'-" But I digress.

Han's has already mentioned creating a database for my books. (Not just AMC, I have most of James Patterson's books, and other series from different authors that I probably ought to keep better track of)...But how do YOU keep track of the books you have? Any inspiring ideas may be mercilessly implemented by yours truely. If you do have a database, how did you decide to configure it? Author name? Edition?

This'll help me, but I'll also be interesting to see how many ways people keep tabs on their ever-growing collections...

~Sara.

My laptop doesn't have any sort of database to use, sadly. So I've made do with a Notepad document.
I've been working on a value of the books for quite a while now and am just getting to where I'm going to be getting a total. So instead of an easy click of a button in Excel I'm having to add them by hand on a calculator, but I'll put in subtotals for each book and then another subtotal for a series. Then I can just add these up for a 'grand total'. I know Excel would be easier but I had this started long ago and just never converted it over. Maybe someday when I no longer have to work and can just spend time transferring it over I'll then buy Excel and do it.
I first tried to use my Guide to keep track of everything, but my collection outgrew it! It's still a great tool to use when out book hunting in stores but for keeping good track, not so much.

You know of course that there are completely free Office applications like Open Office or tar Office, which speadsheets are even compatible with Excel if that would be important?
But you already said it's time you lack, so this is just meant as a general advice.

Unfortunately, I formatted my computer at home and as yet, my uncle -still- hasn't given me back my disks so i can install my microsoft office again yet, so I don't have excell. I will be buying a laptop just after Christmas in the sales however, so that'll obviously have it on...Hmm...

Sara, Windows might be pre-installed but Microsoft Office usually is not.
