Awww. He was one of the first science fiction writers whose work I ever read, and I've enjoyed several of his short stories and novels since. It was Dark They Were, and Golden Eyed, if anyone's curious. First novel, probably Fahrenheit 451.

We read Fahrenheit 451 for class in high school. It was one of those few books that the entire class had very definite opinions on.

Saw this yesterday on the news. A whole generation of sf and fantasy writers is slipping away, the generation of my parents...

I didn't like Ray's generally bleak outlook of the future in his novels but he was a very gifted writer, author of many classics.

Yeah, this has been keeping me awake at night. The authors departing makes me sad, but the thought of parents... I'm not sure I can handle that.

Another great talent. His stories may be depressing but they sure stay with you.

Sigh, it seems that all of the greats of the golden age of science fiction and fantasy are gone.

I just watched the Beast from 20000 fathoms (based on his short story "The Foghorn" the day before I heard the news. Not to surprising really as Ray looked really horrible in the interview they did for the dvd. I will always remember his stories and sense of humor during interviews though.

He celebrated his birthdays at my local independent bookstore, Mystery and Imagination every year until his health prevented him from traveling the short distance from his house to Glendale. He was such a wonderful person. Ds#1 was so nervous waiting to talk to him at one of his birthdays that I had to have him breath with me so he would not get sick. Nerves have a tendency to upset his stomach. However, he made it and he still talks about meeting him.

Not only did he write books but he wrote a book of poetry which I owe. There is one poem he wrote when his daughter went on her first date which makes me laugh each time I read it.
