Pattern?

You're supposed to use a pattern?

Actually, I bought these two books for seed bead animals. Which were basically useless. No instructions on how to do the stitches or anything!

So I took apart a couple of my grandma's beaded flowers to figure out her secret.

Then I looked at the books again.

The body of the dragon was from the rhinoceros.
The wings were from a shell.

The rest I made up. Seriously.

So - you think people will buy these?

Haha! I'm slow and can't seem to manage making anything without at least a picture to go buy. I think it's amazing you put it all together like that. Way to go. I'll buy one!

I'm working on a green, now.

Y'know, I'm actually amazed I got this done.

According to the beading website, and any other craft "rules", you're supposed to start with something simple, and work your way up. This give you confidence in what you're doing.

Can I do that? Noooooooo. I have to get this image in my mind, and run with that.

Make a beaded girl? Pshaw, I say. What would I do with a beaded girl? (Though I am thinking about making a mermaid now...)

Anyway, nooooo, I have to start with something that is not only intricate, but there's no pattern for it. Mind you, I've never ever done a beading project of any size bead before. (Though yeah, I used to watch Grandma do her flowers.)

Then, not only do I do something that has no pattern, the beads I used? They are nowhere near uniform in size. Granted, seed beads aren't necessarily uniform, but these are a hexagonal type bead, some are longer than others, so I could be trying to go up from four beads to six, and have the strands still be the same size.

Pfft. These seem to be like bugle beads, only cut to seed bead size. (Bugle beads are the long skinny ones - I used them for the tail fork and the legs.)

THEN, of course I have to choose a dark color. I said I'm working on a green now? Much easier - the lighter color makes the wire easier to see.

I'm actually amazed that I got this little guy done!

Yeah, starting simple's no fun when you have something in mind you'd rather do! I'm the same way with crochet. I came up with my own patterns when I started, as far as colors go, and quickly jumped from simple stuff to complex ones that even my grandmother thought were hard! And at the time I didn't think I was as good as she was.

Oooh. Mermaids are all the rage. My niece is in love with the little mermaid. Good luck with your projects! I'm still trying to get some time for my origami. Although, I think it's a bit out of my league really.

It's too bad that L'eggs no longer come in those plastic eggs they used to use.

That would be the perfect size.

Greenie is almost done - I need to put her legs on. And give her a tailfork.

I'm glad that Kat mentioned she liked the tailfork. I thought it looked like the tail of a bug, but that was the best I could do.

BTW, I like the eyes! They seem to be the right size. The face (or head) is really good too. I think it has expression.

Y'know, I'm not sure if I'm using normal beading wire, since the wire is also a legacy from Grandma. Or, it's beading wire from the 60's and 70's!

I finished the green and have begun a blue. I'll post pics once I take them.

That's really wonderful, Shalyn! How long does it take to make one (once you've figured out how to do it, that is)?

Once I've figured out? I'm still figgering!

Lessee - Bronzie there took Friday night, and Saturday. Greenie took Sunday, and Monday night.

Bluey was started Monday night, and I worked on him last night.

Of course, y'all realize this isn't straight working on them. I do a bit, then I do something else...

I finally got some graph paper to graph out the beads. I only know one stitch at the moment, the ladder stitch. I need to try the brick stitch to see if I can do something else...

So far, the bronze looks sloppy because of the wire. But the green is fine in that respect.

The green's neck is too slender, though OTOH it makes her look more feminine.

I don't like the legs on either.

The blue - wasn't sure if I had enough blue beads, so I'm adding black beads in some spots to try and make "riding straps". We'll see how that goes.

I didn't take or post the pics last night 'cause I got home at 8:00.

Updates shortly.
