Partly because I do truly love to read them and partly because it would give me inspiration for writing my own dragon rider story, can anyone recommend other books about dragon riders? Both the good and the bad are welcome here (I need all kinds of points of view).

Thanks!

Dragonriders? Hmm...

As dragionriders go I can recommend the first volume, maybe the first two in Mercedes Lackey's Dragon Jouster series. Only the first two mind.

Though nothing to do with riding dragons a magnificent series is Melanie Rawn's Sunrunner series (6 volumes, 2 series of 3)

And personally I like Christopher Rowley's series about the battledragon Bazil Broketail an his dragonboy Relkin, although that is a totally different take on dragons. But maybe you like it.

Also not about riders as such but among the best dragon fantasy books ever written is the Kolmar series by Elizabeth Kerner (a member here).

As for the rest Dickson, Wrede, Williams and Yolen come to mind.

Then there's "The Neverending Story" by Michael Ende and Christopher Paolini's Dragon books (which are better then what the movie projected of it).

Eragon is actually the first I thought of, although the one and only time that I've ever tried to get into the story failed miserably- I' m sorry, it's just not original enough for me. "Impressing a dragon? Where do you suppose that he got that idea?" Meh. Sorry!!

You might enjoy it, though!

Well I did enjoy the books - just felt the movie "murdered" the first book so to speak

Eragon - Been there, done that, burned it after reading

Yolen - Started and liked it but stopped through the second book. Cant remember why.

Wrede - Loved it! Maybe I should read it again.

Kerner - LOVED IT AND MUST READ A THIRD TIME! I was thrilled to hear she's getting a new contract!

Dickson, Williams, Rowley - Never heard of them. Could I have more info please?

Novik, Brust - Would anyone recommend those?

Great, thanks for the tips! Any others, please speak up! Im eager for more!

Forgot to add that there's a book called Dragonology too. I think Junior has it somewhere in his room.

Litwiolf,

For Christopher Rowley and Bazil Broketail series: http://www.christopherrowley.net/nov...zilSeries.html
(please do NOT expect anything near your normal/average dragon. This is a whole new cocept and look on them.

Gordon R. Dickson is responsible for the dragon knight series, yet another concept (of a person turned into a dragon).
More here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragon_Knight

Tad Williams has written several "dragon books". I advise you to rummage around his website or the internet to read more. I can tell you I emmensly enjoyed the Memory, Sorrow and Thorn series that begins with The Dragonbone Chair. If you like classical fantasy, you might too.

Litwolf: I would strongly recommend Novik. They're a cross between Dragons and the Napoleonic War genre, both of which I read (as anyone who has seen my bookcase can probably tell).
Once I got past the first page where the language is just a little bit clumsy (once she gets started the books are far stronger) they were unputdownable. The style merges well with both genres and the characters are just great, the historical figures are a lot better drawn than in some "real" naval stories, helped, to be honest, by the fact that although her protagonist is British, she is not British herself and can be a bit more objective about the Brits.

And Temeraire's a sweetie of course!

E. E. Knight has the Age of Fire series which is about intelligent dragons. I'm not a crazy fan of it, but it's very solid.

Alan F. Troop has a series too, but I'd say the first two books are good and the rest are largely retreads of the same book over and over. I don't think he expected to do a series. The dragons here are more villian-like, and man-eaters.

Neither of these are "dragon-riding" series, however. Just have dragons as the main characters. And neither are anywhere as good as AMC's books.

I'd recommend Brust - but not necessarily for what you were asking about. The closest thing to a real dragon in all of his books is a jhereg, and that is more like a firelizard, except with human-like intelligence.

Novik is great, as is Dickson. I'm really surprised you haven't heard of Gordon R. Dickson, as he's been around forEVer. First book in his series, however, is "The Dragon and the George".

I'll second, third, and fourth Novik's Temeraire series. Its historical fantasy, and it isn't just a rehash of the same dragon + knight theme you find in Joust, Eragon, etc.

There is 'Dragon Master' by chris bunch which i read. I found it interesting but easy to put down in between (that could of course be just me..) It is about a war with soldiers trying to form 'flights' of dragons to fight airborn. I felt it bore fairly close comparision to the role of planes in the 1st WW with it being air corps for reconnaisance before becoming fully fledged RAF in the 2nd WW. Sorry bad explaination, i hope you understand. It is an interesting idea anyhow

I actually first read Eragon, but, after reading DF, I understood where he got the idea for a book, and didn’t like it, but I think he has a lot of potential.

I have that one. There are a lot of books from that series, and, although they might look like there for little children, I find them fascinating and really beautiful.

Bruce Coville's book Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher will be in the children's section but is VERY good. It appears to be set in the same universe as his Unicorn Chronicles books, as well.
