Cool Anne McCaffrey - A Life With Dragons

Hooray!

Professor Robin Roberts, who wrote Anne McCaffrey, A Critical Companion, has finally finished the biography she's been writing about Anne. It is due to hit bookstores sometime in September. The cover price is $28, which Amazon has reduced to $18.48 already for pre-orders.

Here's the description at Amazon of this 240 page bio:
Anne McCaffrey: A Life with Dragons is the life story of a writer who vividly depicted alien creatures and new worlds. As the author of the Dragonriders of Pern series, McCaffrey (b. 1926) is one of the most significant writers of science fiction and fantasy. She is the first woman to win the Hugo and Nebula awards, and her 1978 novel The White Dragon was the first science-fiction novel to appear on the New York Times hardcover bestseller list.

This biography reveals a fascinating and complex figure, one who creates and recreates her fiction by drawing on life experiences. At various stages, McCaffrey has been a beautiful young girl who refused to fit into traditional gender roles in high school, a restless young mother who wanted to write, an American expatriate who became an Irish citizen, an animal lover who dreamed of fantasy worlds with perfect relationships between humans and beasts, and a wife trapped in an unhappy marriage just as the women's movement took hold.

Author Robin Roberts conducted interviews with McCaffrey, her children, friends, and colleagues, and used archival correspondence and contemporary reviews and criticism. The biography examines how McCaffrey's early interests in theater, Slavonic languages and literature, and British history, mythology, and culture all shaped her science fiction. The book is a nuanced portrait of a writer whose appeal extends well beyond readers of her chosen genre.
I'm so excited this book is finally coming out, I hope it'll be released early enough in Sept that I can take a copy with to EuroCon.

ETA - I found a release date of Sept 28 somewhere, so after Eurocon. sigh.

There is the book Todd wrote, Dragonholder, but it is not a traditional biography as this one will be -- it's more a set of remembrances than a detailed look at Anne's life.

According to the WeyrFest coordinator, Robin Roberts will be at Dragon*Con and I believe is scheduled to visit the WeyrFest room? I wonder if she will have copies of the book with her?

She might have an ARC, but DragonCon is before the release date (especially as Amazon says my copy won't ship until Oct 1).

Oh, and there's the biography by Martha Trachtenberg, which is very good but short and aimed at middle school aged kids.

Oh, I can't wait to see this book and read it! It will be super to add to the collection! This is the one that MIGHT have the picture that I took of her and Ceara Rose at her SFHoF Induction.
Anne says she loves that picture and carries a copy with her. But to have it in the bio would be super. Anne said it might be included in the book, but wasn't sure.
Thanks for posting Cheryl as I wasn't sure when it was coming out.

Very cheap copies of Tractenbergs bio and even Mary Brizzi's booklet are offered there. The last you absolutely need for your AMC project!

It's here, it's here! The cover art is taken from the US Dolphins of Pern cover by Rowena. I'll get a scan up later tonight.

There's a nice section of photos in the middle, which I've flipped idly through and spotted Dereval Diamond (Menolly), Annie Scarborough, and Richard Woods, among others.

It's over 200 pages, with a index and other appendices. Will detail on that later too (cooking dinner right now, but had to share some details).

Here it is!

As I said the cover art is from the US Dolphins of Pern, tweaked a bit. On Dolphins the ocean is green, here it is blue. It's also not cropped as close.

I'm about 50 pages in and enjoying it so far. Roberts background as a literature professor is clear, as she keeps pointing out how events and influences on Anne's life are expressed in her writing. My only complaint so far is that while a lot of pictures are referenced, too few are actually included in the book. I want to see all these pictures that Roberts mentions!

Chapter titles are:
An Irish Family Heritage
Adolescence and a Time of War
College Days and Marriage
Annie and Virginia
Emigration and a Best-Seller
Struggling with Success
Being a Fairy Godmother
The Grand Master

------------------------------------
Cilla -- did you get to see Robin Roberts at DragonCon, and if so.... Report!

While searching to see if there's an excerpt anywhere online (there isn't), I found the following quick review of the book from Publisher's Weekly, to which I say pffffft!
In the 11 years since publishing Anne McCaffrey: A Critical Companion, Robin Roberts has been collecting material for Anne McCaffrey: A Life with Dragons, a detailed biography of the trail-blazing author. Roberts’s overview of McCaffrey’s life covers much the same ground as previous bios by Todd McCaffrey (Anne’s son and occasional collaborator) and Martha P. Trachtenberg, but gossipy anecdotes about SF industry bigwigs from Isaac Asimov to Virginia Kidd will keep readers entertained.
It is sooooooooo much more in depth than either Todd's book or the Trachtenberg bio, they are really not fair comparisons. Those two are rough sketches, outlines -- while the Roberts bio is a full picture, the fleshed story from the outline

Eeeek! I saw my name here, so I guess I'd better do as told, and "report". (didn't know I was a harper, thought I was a Weaver. . . ) Unfortunately I didn't see Robin Roberts at Dragon*Con. I hope other people did. I was at the Pern room for two short visits, but not when she was there. I did get to see Jody Lynn Nye a couple times, and had a very pleasant, though brief visit at her book signing. She had out a limited edition comic that she'd done with Robert Asprin (limited to only 100 copies) and I snapped up one, which she signed as well as the publisher (I think that's who he was). I didn't see Robert Asprin so didn't get his signature on it, I believe others got all three signatures. I was just very pleased to get a copy.

You should all know by now that I enjoy knowing what a person looks like. So as I'm reading Anne's new Biography I googled for a photo and some information about Robin Roberts...the author. Seems she is a very interesting person, who has also led a very interesting life.
